ULU TIRAM - We love a great “dog rescues human” story. How many times did Lassie save little Timmy after he fell down a well? Last week, a three-month-old stray dog named Kopi showed his puppy power when he pulled a 67-year-old woman out of a burning building.
Sarawak native Lika Duga, who lives in Ulu Tiram in Johor Baru, had reluctantly adopted the little tyke from the streets two months ago, to fill a void left by her husband after he died in May. She never had any kids and she wasn’t used to caring for a pet dog either, but her relationship with Kopi was sealed when a fire broke out in her house on October 2.
As flames razed though the wooden house in the middle of the night, Lika says her rescuer whined and whimpered, and started tugging at her nightgown and her hair to wake her up. Then as thick smoke filled the air, Lika grabbed Kopi and made a desperate dash towards the front door, getting out just in time to see her house burn to the ground.
Sadly, her neighbour’s home was also destroyed and the owner perished in the tragedy. “I would have died in the fire too if not for Kopi,” says Lika. “The puppy that I didn’t want actually saved my life.” Both Lika and Kopi are now staying with her relatives.
