KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 — A source said to be close to Datuk Seri Najib Razak has slammed the police for pushing ahead with a search of the ousted former prime minister’s private home on the eve of Ramadan and which is still ongoing today.

News portal Malaysiakini reported the unnamed source as sympathising with the toppled Barisan Nasional (BN) leader, saying the police could have cut Najib some slack during the holy fasting month for Muslims by carrying out the search earlier.

“This is uncalled for. Why couldn’t they conduct the search earlier? He has to prepare for ‘sahur’ soon,” the source was quoted saying.

“Sahur” is the pre-dawn meal for Muslims who have to fast from dawn till dusk for a month.


Police have cordoned off the roads leading to Najib’s private house in the upscale neighbourhood of Taman Duta here since Sunday.

Investigators who are part of special police taskforce probing the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal also entered the property last night about 8pm and have confiscated several items, including handbags and clothing.

Najib’s lawyer Datuk Harpal Singh, who was also present at the house during the search, told reporters that investigators were combing every inch of the sizeable property.

The source blamed Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the current treatment accorded to Najib, adding the latter should be given a measure of respect.

“Looks like Mahathir’s revenge has won. I hope he is happy wherever he is sleeping,” the associate of Najib was quoted saying further.

However, Dr Mahathir had made it clear that he nor his Pakatan Harapan administration will take revenge on Najib, but will follow the rule of law to restore order in government and its institutions.

“We are not seeking revenge, what we want to do is restore the rule of law.

“If anybody breaks the law, and that includes the journalists, they will be brought before the court to be trialed,” he told a news conference on May 9 after claiming victory based on the unofficial results of the 14th general election.
