PETALING JAYA: The Star Online was the top read news portal for the month of October, the latest Malaysian Digital Association (MDA) and comScore Inc report revealed.

The Star Online ranked ahead of Harian Metro and Sinar Harian, which placed second and third respectively among news portals.

The report also listed The Star’s website, www.thestar.com.my, as seventh overall from 30 local websites, after it received 920,000 unique visitors for the month from desktop devices.

Maybank’s online banking portal, www.maybank2u.com.my, remained in first place with over 2.8 million unique visitors, followed by Mudah.my and Airasia.com in second and third.

Google sites, Facebook and Yahoo sites dominated the web properties category for October, with the The Star Media Group listing 22nd overall.

Surprisingly, Malaysiakini, which is usually a close second to The Star Online in the English-language news portal category, saw a drop in visitors as its popularity was eclipsed by The Malaysian Insider (TMI) and The Rakyat Post (TRP).

Malaysiakini registered 634,000 unique visitors in October compared to 671,000 in September. TMI was second most-read English news portal with 720,000 unique visitors, and TRP was third with 683,000.

Among web properties accessed by mobile users, The Star Media Group ranked eighth out of 20 web properties with most unique visitors for October.

The Star registered 882,000 unique visitors, ranging across smartphone and tablet users.

Astro group was the top web property accessed by mobile users for the month, with more than two million visitors.

The MDA and comScore Inc report, released monthly, measures web activity among Malaysian internet users.
