GEORGE TOWN, April 17 — Karpal Singh is to be accorded a funeral with Penang state honours and the state flag will be flown at half-mast until his funeral on Sunday, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said. The veteran opposition MP, 73, died in a car crash in the early hours of today. His long-time assistant was also killed in the road accident. “We can’t accord him a state funeral as that is under the federal jurisdiction so we can only accord him a funeral with state honours,” Lim said in a brief press conference. The state executive council and Karpal’s family have agreed to the plan, he added A ceremony for the public to pay their last respects to the Karpal, popularly known as the ‘Tiger of Jelutong’ for his contribution to the country’s politics, will be held at Dewan Sri Pinang between 9 and 11 on Sunday morning. Karpal will be cremated according to Sikh customs at the Batu Gantung crematorium at 11 am on Sunday. “I’m very sure he would have been very proud to be the son of Penang to be accorded state honours,” Karpal’s son Jagdeep Singh Deo said.
