Leonardo DiCaprio is to star in gritty thriller The Revenant. The five-time Oscar-nominated actor has "committed" to take the leading role in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's big-screen adaptation of Michael Punke's 2002 novel, The Revenant: A Novel Of Revenge, reported Deadline. The 39-year-old will play Hugh Glass, a 19th-century fur trapper who is left for dead by friends after a mauling by a grizzly bear. He then sets out on his journey for vengeance, wanting revenge on those who betrayed him. Sean Penn had been attached to play one of the baddies, but will no longer be in the film. Adapted by Oscar-nominated director Alejandro and Mark L Smith, production on The Revenant is scheduled to begin this September, in time for a release in 2015. Leonardo, who received his fifth Oscar nomination for his performance in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf Of Wall Street, has collaborated with acclaimed filmmakers such as Baz Luhrmann, Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Christopher Nolan and Sam Mendes in recent years.
