Korean Food Product Banned

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has banned Korean-made Yangban brand "Rice Porridge with Abalone", which has been found by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to be contaminated with a deadly bacteria called clostridium botulinum, which can be found in soil and contaminated food.

A "Level 5" order (hold, test and release) was put on the product on April 10 to ensure it does not get into the Malaysian market.

Import data from Food Safety Information System of Malaysia (FoSIM) shows there has been no import of the said product since last year.

Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry will not hesitate to take action against anyone involved in the import, distribution, possession or sale of this product.

Offenders can be charged under Section 13 of the Food Act 1983, which carries a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or a jail term of not more than 10 years, or both.

Human botulism is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease caused by a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria. Symptoms associated with the ingestion of food contaminated with botulism toxin include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, dry mouth, respiratory failure and paralysis.

Noor Hisham said clostridium botulinum is a pathogenic microorganism that can cause fever and abdominal pain. It can also cause death, especially if consumed by infants, the elderly and people with a weak immune system.

Health authorities in Canada and Singapore have withdrawn the product, produced by Dongwon Industries Co Ltd in Korea, from their shelves following the finding by CFIA on April 3.
