KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 ― Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim today tarred Malaysians openly critical of the government when abroad as “most immoral”, in an apparent reference to opposition leaders’ interviews with foreign media.

The minister in the Prime Minister’s Department also said during question time in Parliament that the practice of condemning the country to foreigners only served to disparage all Malaysians by association.

“If we dirty the place where we eat and defecate, it is the most immoral thing to do,” said Shahidan.

“Those who insult and humiliate this country overseas in front of other people have absolutely low morals,” he added.

In an interview with US news network CNN last month, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim criticised the Malaysian government's handling of the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disaster.

“I find it shocking that (the government officials) are not able, that they were not able, or they give some very scanty sort of information.

“The problem is credibility of the leadership. They are culpable because there is a general perception that they are not opening up, that there is an opaque system at work,” he was quoted saying in CNN’s report.

In Parliament today, Shahidan was also asked what the government was doing to prevent information leaks, in light of alleged espionage carried out by countries like the United States and Australia against Malaysia.

The minister replied that Putrajaya was focusing on improving cyber security.

"The government has taken appropriate steps. The Foreign Ministry had sent a protest note to the US embassy and the Australian High Commission on the espionage activities," he said.

Documents released by American intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden last year showed that the US embassy and High Commission in Kuala Lumpur were being used to tap phone calls and monitor communications networks.
