Disney Left Worried Angelina Jolie's New Movie Maleficent Will Flop

Angelina Jolie has claimed that her daughter Vivienne had to star alongside her in Maleficent because all of the other children were terrified of her costume, and now the movie has allegedly left movie bosses scared that it won’t make any money.

A new report from the MailOnline suggests that the new movie is so scary, that investors are now concerned that the movie will tank and could only just manage to scrape its costs back.

Just like her partner Brad Pitt’s movie, World War Z, had eyebrows raised before its release (but went on to become a box office smash), Maleficent is suffering the same sort of speculation, with the report suggesting that the new film will turn off its target audience for being too scary.

Maleficent, Angelina’s first major Hollywood role in four years is the retelling of the villain from the Disney Classic, Sleeping Beauty. Disney have refused to comment on the story, but the report suggests that Disney’s decision to target the movie at young adults as opposed to its traditional fan base of children could be a problem.

“It’s definitely in the ‘not a sure thing’ bucket,” analyst David Bank told the site. Wall Street investors have said that the movie, which opens on May 30, have reportedly sent round emails which reveal the doubt that Angelina’s movie will be a box office hit.

Of the different approach to Maleficent, Angelina has spoken about the protagonist. “She isn't the pretty princess. She isn't a beautiful queen. She's a very awkward, pointy, slightly scary-looking horned creature who goes through a lot in her life, as we discover,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

“I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities.”

Oscar-winning actress Angelina has championed the character of Maleficent and is a firm believer that showing the villain is a good idea, especially for children.

“It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain.

“[Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect. In general, it’s a very good message to say, ‘Let’s look at something from the other side.’”

Angelina added: “But then also, what our challenge will be - and the script writer [The Lion King and Alice in Wonderland's Linda Woolverton] has already cracked it - is not to simplify it, not to just reverse the story but tell a bigger story that doesn’t point the finger [at Princess Aurora] either.”
