There’s a new superhero heading to the big screen to rival Batman, Superman and Ant-Man – and it comes in the shape of 80s comic favourite Bananaman. Yes, banana fans, it appears that the fruit-chomping crimefighter – and his alter ego Eric Wimp – will, according to an official website for the project, be surfacing at a cinema near you in 2015. However the Bananaman Movie site gives little else away, apart from inviting users to ‘#peelthepower’ and crediting both Elstree Studios and Bananaman creators DC Thomson as being involved with the film. The lack of information has left fans speculating over what to expect from the film – with one saying on Twitter:’ The 9 year old Dandy subscriber so wants this to happen,’ while others added: I don’t like bananas but I do like Bananaman. This movie needs to happen,’ and ‘If done well, this could be AMAZING!’
However others suggested taking a more Batman-style approach to the material, with one quipping ‘Please be a dark reboot…I want whole new levels of bad.’ The character, who first appeared in Nutty comic in 1980 before being transferred to the Dandy, was the blue-and-yellow clad alter ego of schoolboy Eric Wimp, who was transformed into the titular hero every time he ate a banana. A BBC TV series based on the character, featuring the voices of comedy trio The Goodies, ran for 40 episodes from 1983-1986. Metro |
