 KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 — A new designer drug was believed to have hit the streets following the death of six party-goers last Friday. A source from the police said they are believe the new drug, popularly known as “Tab”, was used by the six — aged between 19 and 28 — who attended the Future Music Festival Asia 2014 at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil. He said the wrong mixture of contents could have proved lethal for those who consumed it. This new revelation comes after Kuala Lumpur police had said the deaths could have been caused by an overdose of methamphetamine, or better known as meth. “We are finding out the contents of the drug, where the drug originated from and the manufacturer. We would also want to look at the mixture of the drugs which could shed some light to the deaths of the six youngsters,” the source said. According to him, the drug resulted in side-effects stronger than that of another designer drug, Ecstasy. “This is the first time we’re dealing with such a drug. Samples have been sent to the Chemistry Department and we will be able to know more when the results are out in a week’s time,” he said. “Based on our initial investigation, the manufacturer could have got the content mixture wrong and that could have caused the deaths.” The source said the youngsters would have been experimenting with this new drug as they wanted to try something “stronger” with more “kick”. He claimed such a drug had caused deaths in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. The victims would see an increase in body temperatures, high blood pressure and the heart beating faster, he said. The three-day music festival was forced to end on its third day, upon police advice, after the six died while another 14 were admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital (three admitted), University Malaya Medical Centre (10) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (one). Of the 14, nine were Singaporeans and one each from Malaysia, Myanmar, Iran, Taiwan and another whose nationality remained unknown. One of the Singaporeans was discharged yesterday. Police arrested 13 Malaysians and 16 foreigners for drug abuse during the festival. The organisers had said in a statement one death took place at the venue and the others died on their way to hospital and at the hospital. Unverified reports suggest there had been other deaths related to drug abuse during previous editions of the festival. Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh said police were waiting for the toxicology reports following the post-mortems on the six victims. MMail
