Macau gaming revenue rebounded to $1.43 billion in January, reflecting pre-pande

Macau's total casino gaming revenue in January 2023 was $11.58 billion ($1.43 billion), the highest gaming revenue it has achieved in the region since January 2020.

233% Up Over December 2022:

Inside Asian Gaming took over information from the Office for the Coordination of Game Inspection (DICJ), confirming that in January Macau posted total gaming sales of 82.5% higher than January 2021 levels, and 233% higher than December. Buoyed by recent easing measures and the festive season, the region's GGR hit $1.43 billion last month, nearly 2.5 times higher than December's figure, and more than 50 times higher than July's 2022 low of $49 million.

Highest GGR in 3 years:

The GGR achieved in January is the highest in the last three years, marked by a strong COVID-19 impact and related closures and travel restrictions. It is also the second-best monthly result ever, behind the 2.74 billion GGR recorded in January 2020, just before the COVID-19 restrictions were fully lifted by the government on January 8, 2023. Those restrictions, along with the first signs of recovery felt in Macau in December 2022, caused gaming revenue as low as we experienced in July 2022.

Arrivals increased due to the opening on January 8th:

Macau's total gaming revenue of $1.43 billion for casinos in January represents about 25% of total revenue in 2022, which testifies to the impact of measures on casino operations and the importance of the recent opening of gaming facilities, which in particular provide easier access to tourists from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Since Jan. 8, tourists have been asked to provide a negative COVID test on arrival. The result is a nearly 300% increase in tourist arrivals in the region compared to the same period last year.

Earnings exceeding the expected level:

That figure was further boosted by the seven-day holiday of Chinese New Year, which drew nearly half a million visitors from mainland China. Hong Kong visitors also contributed to the number of visitors to Macau casinos, taking advantage of resumed ferry and bus services and overnight stay bonuses offered during the festival. While visitor numbers are still lower than pre-pandemic levels, operators boast revenue exceeding expected levels in the number of people arriving in January.

"We are above break-even and in very positive territory," said Rob Goldstein, chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands, to show that a full recovery in the Macau gambling industry is on the way to reaching pre-pandemic numbers.
