KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 — The Terengganu Islamic Affairs and Malay Custom Council (Maidam) will provide financial aid to “Mat Rempits” seeking to start businesses using zakat or alms money. Maidam chief Datuk Shaikh Harun Shaikh Ismail said the council can provide about RM15,000 from their alms fund for the group on condition they show commitment, Malay daily Utusan Malaysia reported today. “We have plenty of shoplots to offer to them, the most important thing is that they must truly show their eagerness to do business and change their lifestyle,” Shaikh Harun was quoted as saying after officiating an event in Kuala Terengganu. He further said in Maidam will engage with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) to help them gain relevant knowledge and skills before starting a business. Mat Rempits largely comprise poor Malay youths who often take part in illegal street races and are widely seen as a road and social menace. - See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.co ... thash.HETSDlyb.dpuf
