Mourners follow wrong hearse for 9 miles in funeral mix-up

Friends and family accidentally fell in behind a different funeral car and ended up in the wrong cemetery

Grieving family and friends followed the wrong hearse for nine miles on the way to the cemetery following a funeral.

In a mix-up that the vicar described as "straight out of Only Fools and Horses", mourners at the funeral of Mair Howard, 71, of Haverfordwest left St David's Church in Predergast, Pembrokeshire on their way to the cemetery and accidentally fell in behind the wrong funeral car.

At the funeral on May 5, mourners lost sight of the 'right hearse' as they waited for a gap in traffic at a roundabout and three cars started following the vehicle to a different cemetery, reports WalesOnline.

Following the church service mourners from Cardigan unfamiliar with their surroundings opted to follow the hearse from the church to a committal service at Freystrop Cemetery.

The procession wound its way down Prendergast Hill, where mourners were slightly delayed by traffic at a roundabout.

As they approached Green's Roundabout for a right turn taking them through Haverfordwest towards Freystrop, another hearse from a different funeral passed on its way to Parc Gwyn Crematorium in Narberth.

Mourners in three cars - believing the second hearse was carrying Mrs Howard - followed the vehicle along the A40 while the rest of their cortege turned south over the River Cleddau towards Freystrop.

After following the wrong hearse for nine miles to the village of Robeston Wathen, the group - which included Mrs Howard's nephews and bearers Geraint and Meredith Rees from Cardigan - were alerted to their mistake by a mobile phone call asking where they were.
