Govt didn’t buy 6 luxury cars, BMW clarifiesBMW managing director and chief executive officer Alan Harris says the group will be providing a fleet of BMW 7 Series and BMW 5 Series for the Asean Summit.
[size=100%]KUALA LUMPUR April 8, 2015: BMW Group Malaysia has denied a claim by PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli that the federal government had bought six of its cars. In a statement today, its managing director and chief executive officer Alan Harris explained the vehicles were part of BMW Group Malaysia’s commitment as the Automotive Partner of the upcoming 26th Asean Summit taking place in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi from April 24-28. “BMW Group Malaysia would like to clarify that the cars mentioned and photographed have not been purchased by Putrajaya,” Harris said, alluding to the six BMW 7 series. He added BMW Group Malaysia would be providing a fleet of BMW 7 Series and BMW 5 Series which would be utilised for the shuttling of all dignitaries, officials and VIPs for South East Asia’s most prominent meeting later this month.
BMW Group Malaysia’s response came after the Pandan lawmaker raised the question on why the federal government had purportedly purchased the cars, each with the national crest affixed to its registration plate after it was spotted outside a BMW dealership. In a press conference at Parliament earlier, Rafizi claimed that the alleged purchases were unnecessary as it was made at the time when the people were coping with the recently enforced goods and services tax. The vehicles were spotted outside a local BMW dealership in Bandar Puteri Puchong. He added the alleged purchase had drawn questions from netizens, including why the government did not use Proton cars instead as Putrajaya had claimed that Malaysia’s Proton was on par with BMW.
