Family claims 36-year-old Shenzhen man 'worked himself to death'
Family members and colleagues of a 36-year-old IT worker in Shenzhen who collapsed and died last month believe that his death was the result of overwork. The worker, surnamed Zhang, was made head of a company project in October, and the extra load of responsibility meant he was constantly working overtime. Often he would work until the early hours of the morning, sometimes until 5:00 or 6:00 a.m. One of Zhang's colleagues revealed that he wasn't getting paid extra for working overtime, but the company provided him with a hotel room near the company. Zhang’s wife, surnamed Yan, also said, ”My husband for the past several months has been working overtime, he even started working on the third day of Spring Festival.” Zhang's very last work email was sent out on March 24 at 12:56 a.m. The same day, he had called his wife, and she said he seemed fine. He was found dead in the bathroom of his hotel room the next morning. The day before his death, Zhang had told his mom that he was extremely exhausted. He promised his parents he would go on a holiday once he finished the project. China Youth Daily estimates that in China, around 600,000 people die every year from overwork. Last April, a 33-year-old man who was found dead in his apartment was likewise suspected to have collapsed from exhaustion after working a full month with no days off and 190 hours of overtime. In 2013, a 24-year-old employee at Ogilvy & Mather China's offices in Beijing suffered from a sudden heart attack that was thought to have been brought on by overwork.
