In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

PLOT:
In 1820, the whaleship Essex is crewed by Captain George Pollard, Jr. (Benjamin Walker), first mate Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth), second mate Matthew Joy (Cillian Murphy), and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson (Tom Holland). During their voyage, the ship is struck by a large bull sperm whale, ultimately leaving its crew shipwrecked at sea for 90 days over a thousand miles from home. After the attack, the crew sails for South America and is forced to become cannibalistic.
ceritanya ttg perjalanan kapal penangkap ikan paus yang disebut Essex, tapi semasa ditengah melaut ia karam karena diserang sperm whale di Pasifik. terdampar lah kru kapalnya selama 90 hari di laut di dalam perahu whale boat yg lebeih kecil.
katanya semasa abad ke-19, keje memburu paus adalah sesuatu yang diidam-idamkan banyak org. Selain wang, pekerjaan tersebut juga memberi kesempatan untuk bertualang ke laut luas .pati minyak ikan paus yang dihasilkan dari hasil perburuan dikatakan amat berharga... beribu lemon gitu dan boleh dijual dengan nilai yang sangat mahal. Bayangkan saja, semua jenis lampu pd zaman itu, pakai pati minyak ikan paus (karena minyak tanahbelom dijumpai begitu kisahnya...

Kisah pasai sorg writer yang teringin nak mengetahui apa sebenarnya yang berlaku kepada kapal pemburu paus 'Essex' yang berpengkalan kat Nantucket, US. Writer ni nak menceritakan kisah tersebut dalam his upcoming new novel... so, dia berjumpalah salah sorg anak kapal yang menyertai kapal pemburu paus 'Essex' tersebut...
Biler anak kapal tersebut mula bercerita kepada writer tersebut, barulah para penonton dibawa ke pengambaraan epik kapal pemburu paus tersebut dari awal ... sehingga ke pertembungan dengan moby dick ... hanyut kat lautan ... tersadai kat pulau terpencil ... hanyut balik kat lautan dan akhirnya diselamatkan ...
