SBS Transit driver attacked by parang-wielding men in JB
By Satish Cheney, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 10 February 2009 2135 hrs

SINGAPORE: A Singapore bus driver was attacked by parang-wielding men in a bold robbery attempt in the southern Malaysian city of Johor Bahru on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred on SBS Transit bus service number 160 which had just left the Kotaraya shopping centre. It was heading for the Woodlands Checkpoint at the border with Singapore.

A caller to MediaCorp's News hotline said the driver was slashed with a parang when he tried to close the door on the men who were trying to board.

An SBS Transit spokesman told Channel NewsAsia that the injured driver would be transferred from the Johor General Hospital to Singapore soon.

He is believed to be a Singapore permanent resident in his early thirties.

It is not known how many passengers were on board at the time of the incident or if any of them were injured. The assailants fled immediately after the incident.

Service 160 plies between Kotaraya in Johor Bahru and the Jurong East Interchange in Singapore, and the journey usually takes about 70 minutes.

More low-cost flights

By Karamjit Kaur, Aviation Correspondent

TRAVELLERS on a tight budget can look forward to even more low-cost flights between Singapore and Malaysia.

Transport officials from both sides who met here on Tuesday, have sealed an expanded air services deal.

Airlines form both countries now have the right to operate between Singapore and six new destinations in Malaysia - Ipoh, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan, Malacca, Sankadan and Tawau.

It also provides increased traffic rights to existing cities, namely Penang, Langkawi, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

The lifting of restrictions which is expected to benefit travellers and boost the economies of both countries, follows several rounds of liberalisation which started last year.

In February, Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia and AirAsia were given the green light to operate a limited number of Singapore-Kuala Lumpur services.

All restrictions on the route were lifted in December.

In November last year, the two governments also opened up the Singapore-East Malaysia sector.

In a statement on Tuesday, BG (NS) Choi Shing Kwok, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Transport said: 'This new agreement is important for both countries, as the enhanced connectivity further boosts economic and tourism linkages between our two countries.

'This is especially important in the current economic climate.'

The liberalisation of Singapore-Malaysia air links is part of a wider initiative to free the skies above Asean.

Transport ministers of the 10 member states have agreed on a long-term road map that will see the creation of an Asean Single Aviation Market by 2015.

When that happens, all carriers of member states will be able to criss-cross the region's skies without any restrictions.
