KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Prank shows on radio channels are prohibited in Islam, or “haram”, popular religious preacher Dr Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin claimed today.
According to the former Perlis mufti, such shows are forbidden because they publicly shock, frighten, mock and shame the victims of the pranks.
“Shows such as those are only fooling their victims, and the victims become a laughing stock for everybody in an embarrassing way,” Mohd Asri said on his Facebook page.
“Indirectly, they improperly reveal the shame of their victims. Muslims must avoid actions such as those.”
As an example, the preacher listed down the “Panggilan Hangit” radio programme on Media Prima Bhd’s Hot FM Malay language channel, which is hosted by its morning DJs Fizie, Fara Fauzana and AG.
Besides Hot FM, Media Prima’s English-language channel Fly FM also has a similar show called “Krappi Call”, run by its morning DJs Ben and Hafiz.
Meanwhile, Astro’s pop music channel Hitz FM has a prank show called “Gotcha” conducted in the morning by DJs Ean and Jinnyboy.
In 2012, then-Information, Communications and Culture Deputy Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D’Cruz had advised radio channels to follow broadcast guidelines and self-regulate their prank shows.
