Malaysian Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has revealed his latest strategy to make it to his country's top office.
Mr Anwar has told Australia Network's Newsline program he is in talks to take over the post of chief minister of the state of Selangor.
He says his plan is to use Selangor as a model to prove that his leadership and policies would work for all of Malaysia.
"This is our launch pad," he said.
"This is the richest state, the most effective state, the most popular state and we will showcase how we run through good governance and transparent governance."
The current chief minister of Selangor is the People's Justice Party's (PKR) Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
The PKR is led by Mr Anwar.
Mr Anwar says discussions about a change in leadership have begun.
"There is that possibility being considered now," he said.
"We do not discount the possibility of a change of guard."
Mr Anwar says one option would be for Mr Khalid to shift into a role as an economic adviser.
Mr Anwar led the opposition to Malaysia's general election in May last year and told Newsline in the lead-up that he would step down from politics if his coalition lost.
Despite a strong showing, his coalition was defeated.
Change of plans
But Mr Anwar now says changing circumstances in Malaysia, including economic and racial problems, have forced him to act.
"I think that compels us to take some drastic measures, including to fortify the state of Selangor as a base for us to challenge the regime," he said.
"We need to put a stop to this race card.
"(But) the thrust of our campaign is still economic policies."
Mr Anwar is contesting the state seat of Kajang in Selangor, where a by-election will be held on March 23.
It's the first step ahead of Mr Anwar's expected bid for the Selangor chief minister post.
