It’s Malay rule, so no difference if BN or Pakatan in power, argues Lee Kuan Yew

Singapore’s first prime minister Lee Kuan Yew (pic) has a sober message for those counting on Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to usher in a new era of race relations in Malaysia: get real.

And the chance of Malay special privileges dismantled by PR in the event that the pact captures Putrajaya? Next to nothing.

To begin with, he said, the chance of the opposition coming to power in the near future was a very long shot. And then there were also the structural problems with the coalition of PAS, DAP and PKR.

He labelled the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim-led coalition as “an opportunistic ad-hoc group not held together by even a vaguely coherent set of ideas but by a common desire to unseat the government’’.

His cutting description of PR and its shortcomings will not surprise political pundits or even seasoned opposition politicians such as Lim Kit Siang and Anwar.

The general view in Kuala Lumpur is that despite the sometimes very public run-ins with the Barisan Nasional-led government (BN) here, the PAP government in Singapore still prefers the status quo in Malaysia.

It is more comfortable dealing with BN, having invested more than four decades building up links at different levels.

So it may be little surprise that Lee is dismissive of PR. He said in his new book launched yesterday, One Man’s View Of The World, that as long as PR does not actually occupy Putrajaya and does not have to implement multiracial policies, some semblance of unity can be maintained within the pact.

“When it comes to the crunch, however, PR will not be able to do away with Malay supremacy. The moment the bluff is called and it is handed full power to push ahead, it will either be torn apart from within or be paralysed by indecision.

“If it attempts to move in any meaningful way, PAS, a Malay-Muslim party that will hold if not a majority of seats within the coalition, then at least a significant enough share to give it veto power, would block action in an instant.

“In doing so, PAS would be responding to the same electoral pressures that Umno faces from the Malay ground,” said Lee.

PR won 89 parliamentary seats, denying BN two-thirds control of parliament for the second consecutive election. It also retained control of the two economic powerhouses of Selangor and Penang and obtained 51 per cent of the popular vote.

One of the main planks of the PR manifesto was a more equitable distribution of wealth. Anwar and other opposition leaders have slammed the BN’s affirmative action programme as a policy that has been hijacked by the Umno elite to enrich themselves and family members. - August 7, 2013.

The father’s not the son - Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew sounds a warning on Iskandar

While the Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong has thrown his weight behind Malaysia’s economic powerhouse in the south, the Iskandar project in Johor, his influential father has once again thrown cold water on it.

In his book "One Man's View Of The World" (pic) launched yesterday, elder statesman Lee Kuan Yew, said, “Let’s wait and see how Iskandar develops. This is an economic field of cooperation in which, you must remember, we are putting investments on Malaysian soil.

“And at the stroke of a pen, they can take it over. They are not likely to because they want more investments.”

The elder Lee, who was the first prime minister of Singapore, still holds memories of broken promises between the two countries, which are deeply linked by history and economic ties, but have had rocky relations over the past half-century.

He said, “When we go there, we must understand that any real estate or building that you plant on the ground belongs to the owner of the ground."

This is not the first time he has raised concerns over Iskandar, despite his own government leading Singapore to be one of the major investors there.

Even four years ago, on his last visit to Malaysia, the elder Lee said Iskandar would be unattractive to private investors as long as there was no long-term stability in Malaysian policy.

He said about his talks to Malaysian authorities then: “I had to emphasise that it cannot be cooperation today and non-cooperation next year and then backwards and forwards, because these are very big investments both in the Iskandar region and the third bridge to Desaru in the East Coast – from Desaru up to Mersing until Kuantan and Pekan.

“It does not make sense to us if at the same time they punish us by making us barge sand from Vietnam. It’s no benefit to them, it’s just to cause us extra losses. The final balance must be fair on both sides and not just specific selective areas.”

Early last year, Hsien Loong was quoted to have said that it was in Singapore's interests to see Iskandar prosper and succeed when he had met counterpart Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Putrajaya.

In 2009, the global financial crisis had prompted Dubai developer Damac Properties to pull out of a waterfront and marina project valued at over RM300 million in Nusajaya which forms part of Iskandar Malaysia.

But even back then, Singapore was listed as the third largest investor in Iskandar Malaysia, boosted by low-profile Singaporean small and medium enterprises (SMEs).- August 7, 2013.

Malaysia is losing ground and  giving other countries a head start in the external competition

Vietnam, Thailand, Filipina ngan Indonesia dah bangkit. Baru2 ni, Myanmar.

Baru balek dari Vietnam dan melihat perubahan ketara negara itu. Ramai orang Malaysia bekerja, melabur dan berniaga disitu.

Najib had said Malaysia is set to become a high income developed nation as early as 2018, two years earlier than the targeted 2020

Naper tak boleh. Rakyat sekarang dilanda jenayah pun dikatakan selamat. Sampai 2018 nanti boleh syok sendiri apa. Apa peduli orang cakap

"The Chinese made up 35.6 percent of the population in 1970. They were down to 24.6 percent at the last census in 2010. Over that same period, the Indian numbers fell from 10.8 percent to 7.3 percent," he said.

oh ye ke?perlu ke nak bg stat bagai?mcm la peratusan melayu dan india kat cinapura tu makin bertambah dan cina berkurang dari 1970s.rakyat cinapura pun sebok migrate ke overseas eg australia and UK sbb pekrjaan bnyk dpt kat outsiders..apa cer?.so what say you LKY?.Singaporeans are being opressed to the max..they cant even express their dissatisfation/ slight hatred towards the govt not even on the so called net or else ISA is waiting for them.So what say u LKY?Or is it now the rite time for PAP to be toppled down huh?
