A Statement from Eizaz Azhar

Hello all, I am releasing a statement on behalf of my girlfriend who will remain anonymous for privacy reasons. Firstly she is safe and sound, with no physical injuries whatsoever, albeit a bit shaken up and frightened. Thank you all for your support; your friendship means a lot to us and we cannot thank you enough for your concern over the matter. I very seldom post a status on FB, especially those that seem to go viral without doing any research so when I do it's quite serious! This is meant to clear the air regarding this traumatizing incident and hopefully this will be of help for those who have faced the same situation before, and those who want to stay vigilant to prevent this sort of event happening again. In chronological order;

1. At around 8pm, in front of Pantai Hillpark, she flagged down a taxi to get to Midvalley (about 5 minutes away). The taxi agreed and she got in. Plate number HWD4778. The driver was an Indian man wearing a white buttoned shirt, slight mustache and thin build. Very dark skin tone with receding hair on his head. Based on CCTV footage police estimate him to be in his mid 40s.

2. Immediately after she got in, another Indian man rushed into the cab via the same door and the driver sped off. This man was chubby, wearing a hat and sunglasses and was the driver's accomplice in the robbery. It was then that she noticed that the taxi did not have any stickers, driver license or any documentation usually found in taxis, in which case it might be a stolen vehicle or a cloned taxi with a fake license plate according to the police.

3. They tied her up with tape and warned her not to do anything stupid. They were only interested in her money and nothing else. The taxi took her around the PJ/Bangsar area for about an hour before finally stopping at Shell Taman Universiti, SS3/35 Petaling Jaya around 9pm.

4. They were armed with a knife and took out all her ATM cards and forced her PIN number. The accomplice remained in the car while the driver went to the petrol station and immediately cashed all her savings in both cards.

5. According to the brief conversation she held with the accomplice, they were raising money for an operation and required RM100,000. They seemed like amateurs as they panicked easily and after a police car passed by they let her go at the same area.

6. They allowed her to keep all her belongings and even gave the ATM cards back to her. Unfortunately they were smudged and fingerprints were no possible to dust. I received her distress call around 9:30pm and rushed to make a police report.

7. The police inspector in charge of the case told us that this month there have been many similar cases around. It is hard to say this without seeming racist but all of the crimes were committed by Indian criminals (the inspector himself was a young Indian man who specialized in forensic sciences).

8. I immediately called up the bank to get the serial number of the ATM machine and location and checked the Shell station with the police officers for the CCTV. All relevant information has been given to the police and hopefully they can catch these criminals before they do further hurt to other people and taxi companies.

Preventive measures are undoubtedly numerous, but from what has occured here are my observations;

-Never get in the back seat of a cab as it gives room for others to enter and overpower you. In the front seat you have access to the handbrake and steering wheel as well as horn and control over the door locks.

-Always call, or pretend to call someone, in front of the driver and tell your current location, destination, driver name, company number and taxi number plate as well as the phone location traceable on GPS. Let the driver listen and be aware that others also know your location.

-Once again, at the expense of being racist, according to the police, all recent cases involve Indian drivers so be very careful when dealing with them (also applies to taxi drivers in general).
