THE incident where a newborn was declared dead at a hospital in the southern city of Foshan in Guangdong province, and placed in a plastic bag in the toilet has enraged many Chinese.
On Oct 26, Liu Dongmei, who was eight months pregnant, was feeling stomach pains and was admitted to the Foshan Nanhai District Red Cross Hospital in the wee hours of the morning. After a two-hour wait at the ward, a doctor finally came to see her but left shortly.Liu then delivered prematurely with the assistance of two nurses.Medics however told her that her baby was stillborn as he did not cry during their initial inspection. The nurses wrapped the baby with a plastic bag and dumped him on the floor of the toilet in a gynaecology care-room.
Suspicious about what the medics said, Liu’s sister-in-law opened the bag and discovered that the baby was still moving and there was amniotic fluid in his mouth and nose.A video shot by Liu’s husband Wang Haizhang using his handphone showed that medical staff inspected the baby in the toilet and the baby’s hands were obviously moving.
The baby was then transferred to the intensive care unit for further examination. The baby is currently reported to be in a stable condition.Liu and Wang were also told that their baby was a girl when in fact, it was a boy.Wang said after the incident, the hospital management did not offer any apology to his family and all they said was they would waive the treatment fee and pay a 8,000 yuan (RM4,000) compensation.
Only until Wang approached the media and made public the incident on Nov 2 did the hospital contact him.The hospital’s quality control department head, Huang Lichuan, was quoted by Xinhua TV as telling Wang that his move to make public the incident had put the hospital in a spot.“Why didn’t you stay calm? Why didn’t you call us before you informed the media?,” she asked.A spokesman from the hospital said they would only admit that they did not do well in the aspect where the doctor did not make an objective judgment.Angry family members of the baby demanded an explanation from the hospital.
