In Sayonara Bokutachi no Youchien, she became the youngest lead ever in Japanese television drama history.
She became the youngest radio host ever on Nippon BS's (JOLF) radio show, called “Children's Day Special – Ashida Mana's Favorite Songs”, at 11 AM on 2011-May-05.
The live-action movie adaptation of Yumi Unita's manga series "Usagi Drop" now has a cast. Kenichi Matsuyama (25) will play the lead role, supported by child actress Mana Ashida (6). SABU will direct.
The movie, first announced in June, tells the story of a young and awkward bachelor (Matsuyama) who begins raising a girl (Ashida) after he learns that she is the illegitimate child of his grandfather. This will be Matsuyama's first time playing a father figure.
Ashida, who debuted as an actress last year, has recently gained attention for her roles in the drama series "Mother" and the movie "Kokuhaku."
Other cast members include Karina (26) and Chizuru Ikewaki (28). Filming has already begun and is scheduled to finish during the middle of this month. Summer 2011 is being targeted for theatrical release.
A private screening of the upcoming movie, “Ghost” was held at the Marunouchi Piccadilly on October 12th. Cast members, Matsushima Nanako, Song Seung Heon, Toda Aina, Ashida Mana and others made an appearance at the screening. As we reported earlier, “Ghost Mouichido Dakishimetai” is an Asian remake of Hollywood’s blockbuster hit “Ghost” released back in 1990 with Matsushima Nanako as the ghost in this version.
At the private showing, it’s been announced the famous theme song for the original Ghost OST track, “Unchained Melody” will also be used for the remake. The track will be covered by Hirai Ken. (Hirai Ken also sings the main theme song “Aishiteru”)
The movie will be released in theaters on November 13th in Japan, and on November 25th in Korea.
The 4th International Drama Festival opened in Tokyo on Monday, as part of the annual Japan International Contents Festival (CoFesta). The event's Tokyo Drama Awards were presented on the same day, and the biggest winners were "JIN" and "Mother."
"JIN" took four of the prizes, including the Grand Prix in the drama series category and Best Performance by an Actor for Takao Osawa. "Mother," on the other hand, won five awards, including a Best Drama award in the drama series category and Best Performance by an Actress for Yasuko Matsuyuki.
One of the special awards this year was Best Actor in Asia, awarded to an actor or actress in a non-Japanese Asian drama. The winner was Lee Byung Hun for his performance in "IRIS."

Mariko Shinoda gets first movie role in "Inu no Eiga" sequel
AKB48's Mariko Shinoda (24) is making her big screen debut with a starring role in the omnibus movie "Inu to Anata no Monogatari: Inu no Eiga." The movie is a sequel to the 2005 film "Inu no Eiga," which tells various stories about people and their dogs.
It was revealed in June that Nao Omori (38) and Nanako Matsushima (37) are starring as a married couple in one of the stories, which have grown in number from the 6 reported at the time to a total of 9. Other known cast members in the different stories include Masaaki Uchino (42), newscaster Tomoaki Ogura (63), and child actress Mana Ashida (6).
Shinoda's story is a comedy piece titled "Aikenka wo Tazunete ~ Orikou." She plays a dog lover named Sudo, who appears on television when her dog is featured as a "genius" that can answer any of her questions. However, she attempts to prove its abilities in a surprising way.
Although the idol has appeared in a few television dramas before, this is her first time with a major role. She stated that she was initially very nervous on the set, but she enjoyed the fact that there were many cute dogs. Shinoda herself is a dog lover in real life and has two dogs, a 2-year-old toy poodle and a 1-year-old Maltese.
"Inu to Anata no Monogatari" is set for release on January 22.
Child actress Mana Ashida (6) has been getting lots of attention since her outstanding performance in the drama series "Mother" this past spring. Since then, roles have been pouring in for the young star, and yet another one was announced on Saturday. She will play a supporting character in the movie "Hankyu Densha," which just started filming.
"Hankyu Densha" was first announced in August. Based on a bestselling novel by Hiro Arikawa ("Freeter, Ie wo Kau"), the film stars Miki Nakatani (34) at the center of several intertwined stories involving the people she encounters while riding the train. The movie's title comes from the Hankyu Railway, which serves as the main setting.
Ashida will share the screen with Nobuko Miyamoto (65), who plays Ashida's grandmother. One reason for Ashida's casting is that she is originally from the Hyogo prefecture, where the story takes place. As a result, she will also be speaking naturally in the local Kansai dialect.
Ashida's recent roles include the movies "Kokuhaku" and the "Ghost" remake. She has already been cast in NHK's 2011 taiga drama "Gou ~Himetachi no Sengoku~," as well as the movies "Usagi Drop" and "Inu to Anata no Monogatari: Inu no Eiga."
On the other hand, this will be Miyamoto's first movie role since "Bizan" in 2007.
The cast of "Hankyu Densha" also features Erika Toda (22). The movie is currently projected for release in April 2011.
Kana Uemura's "Toilet no Kamisama" being turned into drama
Kana Uemura's song "Toilet no Kamisama" will be turned into a 2-hour drama special on TBS, it has been learned. The song, which is nearly 10 minutes in length, tells of Uemura's relationship with her grandmother, from her childhood to her grandmother's death. The song has been a major hit this year, earning Uemura multiple awards, as well as invitations to several year-end music shows, including NHK's upcoming Kohaku Uta Gassen.
Kie Kitano (19) has been chosen to play the part of the protagonist Kana, and Shima Iwashita (69) will play the grandmother. Mana Ashida (6) will play the childhood version of Kana. Also appearing in the drama are Yui Natsukawa as Kana's mother and Nenji Kobayashi as Kana's grandfather.
The "Toilet no Kamisama" will air across the country on TBS and MBS's network on January 5.

The winners of the 34th Japan Academy Prize were announced on Friday. Sang-il Lee's "Akunin" received the most awards, with a total of 15 awards in 13 categories. One of the most notable winners is 6-year-old actress Mana Ashida, the youngest ever to win one of the newcomer awards.
Most of the categories have five "Excellent" recipients, and one in each category will be chosen for the "Best" awards, to be revealed at the presentation ceremony on February 18.
