Katy Perry and Russell Brand married in private Hindu ceremony
Katy Perry and Russell Brand have married in an exotic Hindu ceremony under heavy security in the heart of India's leading tiger park.

Guards blocked any view by long-range photographers as the pair chose to ditch Hollywood glamour and instead to exchange their vows on Saturday surrounded by a small group of friends and family. A Hindu priest conducted the ceremony, which was attended by family and close friends of the couple, a hotel official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media.

Security was stringent with private security guards stationed at the resort and other nearby hotels where guests and the couple are staying for the six-day wedding celebration.

The American singer and her controversial comedian fiancé began their wedding at the luxury tented camp Aman-i-Khas by worshipping a statue of Lord Ganesh – the elephant-headed Hindu God visited by Hindus before the start of any new chapter.
From here the pair walked to a specially designed mandap, a gazebo style structure used in all Indian weddings, and sat on ornate thrones as a Hindu priest, known as a pandit, performed the ceremony. Perry has previously been seen wearing a gold nath – a traditional bridal nose ring with a chain connecting to her hair. Traditionally this is removed by the groom on the wedding night.
The traditional Indian rituals observed by the couple included walking around a sacred fire seven times while reciting Sanskrit mantras and tying a special wedding scarf together to symbolise their united partnership.

Perry and Brand's parents were expected to be heavily involved in the ceremony, with Brand requesting permission to marry Perry by stooping to touch her father and mother's feet – a sign of deep respect in Indian culture. The hour-long ceremony was kept private by scores of security guards who patrolled the resort perimeter. A British firm is coordinating security and has used black sheets to screen off parts of the camp visible from outside.

Local police officers were deployed to the surrounding fields and resort guards stood 10 yards apart along the boundary wall. Only registered vehicles were allowed near the entrance and all staff were being searched as they entered. Brand's personal bodyguards move everywhere with him and on Friday came to blows with local photographers who got too close to the 35-year-old comedian and actor as he was enjoying a tiger safari. Chaos erupted as punches and kicks were thrown and cameras smashed against the bonnet of their vehicle.

Local wildlife photographer Aditya Singh, 44, who witnessed the incident, said: "I have never seen anything like it, you just don't do something like that inside a national park where there are dangerous animals roaming around." Later in the evening the bodyguards arrived at the local police station to officially apologise to the photographers, and charges of assault were dropped.
The north Indian state of Rajasthan has become a popular destination for celebrities. Russell and Perry toured the area last year and got engaged at the Taj Rambagh Palace in Jaipur. In March 2007 Liz Hurley married Indian textile heir Arun Nayar in a lavish ceremony at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. Later the same year Madonna and then-husband Guy Ritchie toured Rajasthan in an attempt to save their marriage.

The state's famous forts and Maharaja palaces, offering privacy and opulent luxury, has made it popular with many of the world's biggest stars. Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie both took breaks in Rajasthan while filming in India. Mick Jagger is a regular visitor and patron of the annual Rajasthan International Folk Festival. Richard Gere regularly holidays in the desert state and Nicole Kidman last year stayed at Udaipur's exotic Lake Palace – also used as the setting for James Bond film Octopussy.
Aman-i-Khas was a hive of activity all last week as organisers prepared for the big day. Thousands of flowers, including roses, marigolds and orchids, were strung together and drapped like curtains around the area while rose petals were scattered along the paths.

Perry, 26, was rumoured to be wearing a dress designed to incorporate a traditional Indian sari and white western gown.
Guests were presented with a box containing four spice-filled pouches, which had been carefully stitched by a group of beautiful local village women working at a nearby craft initiative called Dastkar. Each small pouch, made from cotton and lined with fine muslin, took an hour to make and sold for 50 pence, the profits of which went straight back to the women.

Seamstress Mufida Khan, 35, had no idea her simple pouches were destined to line the expensive suitcases of celebrities. "When I found out these were being given to guests at this important wedding I was so excited," she said. "I would love to see the party and just see all these important people taking my bags home." Some 40 guests have been staying at the eco-chic desert camp, where tents cost £600 a night, and the neighbouring £300 a night Sher Bagh resort, since Wednesday. The exotic tents decorated in the finest fabrics boast huge double beds, sunken baths and private verandas.

Tucked away at the end of a long, dusty track, the camps offer privacy from the prying eyes of the world's media, who descended on the small Indian town. Celebrity guests included comedian David Baddiel and his wife Morwenn Banks. Also on the invitation list were rapper P Diddy, Jonathan Ross, David Walliams and pop star Rihanna.

Camel and elephant rides, visits to local craft shops and tiger safaris have been laid on for the guests, while some have chosen to hire Royal Enfield motorbikes and explore nearby villages. Every night live entertainers, including Rajasthani folk singers and bhangra dancers, performed on a specially constructed square stage inside the camp. Women in the party – and, unconventionally, Brand himself – have been spotted with traditional henna tattoos on their hands. Indian brides receive the intricate decoration, known as mehendi, in the days before their marriage. Many guests have enjoyed tiger safaris at dawn and dusk in open-top jeeps at nearby Ranthambore National Park – home to tigers, leopards, bears, deer and exotic birds.

For local villagers, who live in mud huts, cook on wood fires and pump water from a communal well, the entire wedding event has left them in awe. Goat herders stand on the side of the road looking perplexed as shiny black Mercedes, hired specially to transport guests around the area, overtake camels pulling wooden carts. Local chai seller Ranesh Sarni, whose rickety shack sits near the entrance to Aman-i-Khas, has watched the comings and goings with fascination. The 37-year-old, who usually earns the equivalent of 50p an hour, said: "I'm happy as my earnings have tripled, people are at my stall all the time, I want these celebrities to stay longer."

Katy and Russell Exit India Just as Wild Weekend Wedding Comes Under Investigation

India was very good to Katy Perry and Russell Brand (have you seen so much as a glimmer of their wedding festivities? Didn't think so).But the newlyweds may not have been so good to India in return. At least depending on the outcome of the investigation into their vow swap.

The couple doesn't do anything non-controversial and their big day fits that M.O. nicely. Turns out, the Perry-Brand party had a little too good a time celebrating their wedding, and the event, held in a tiger sanctuary—already something of a sacred and culturally important place—may have violated any number of local laws, particularly those having to do with noise and disturbance. (We're guessing that pre-wedding photographer scrum didn't help, either.)

It's not just local troublemakers stirring the pot, though, as chief minister of the State of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, visited the sanctuary shortly after the wedding to investigate the claims. An inquiry into the debacle has been ordered by the state government and, should further questioning be required, they could possibly detain Brand, Perry, the wedding guests and organizers of the event. Should they take it all the way, the group could also be called to court.
But they'd have to catch them first!

Presumably blissfully unaware of the controversy brewing in India, Perry and Brand embarked on their honeymoon Monday (they're about 12 1/2 hours ahead), boarding a helicopter near their wedding site at Ranthambhore National Park, flying to Jaipur and then taking a chartered flight to the Maldives. It may possibly prove to be something of a group holiday, as friends reportedly joined them on the flight.
