KUALA LUMPUR – The duo accused of insulting Islam – Siti Nuramira Abdullah and partner Alexander Navin Vijayachandran – will be appealing to the public for financial aid to make bail of RM20,000 each, after failing to cough it up on Wednesday.
According to the duo’s lawyer, R. Sivaraj, their legal team will be launching a crowdfunding campaign sometime today as some people have expressed an interest to donate.
“A lot of people have reached out to us (lawyers) about making donations.
“We decided to set up the GoFundMe initiative since nothing has happened after their family and friends were given two days (to gather funds),” he told The Vibes.
He added that a portion of the RM3,000 is not yet in the hands of the defence team as people have only “pledged” to contribute.
He also confirmed that Siti Nuramira is being held in the Beranang satellite prison and Alexander is at the Kuala Kubu Baru satellite prison. Both are awaiting transfer to Kajang Women’s Prison and Sg Buloh Prison, respectively.
Meanwhile, a shariah lawyer has been appointed for Siti Nuramira even though religious authorities have yet to file charges.
However, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said Siti Nuramira will be charged at the shariah court here under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997.
On Wednesday, Siti Nuramira, 26, had pleaded not guilty to charges of inciting religious disharmony during her open mic skit at the Crackhouse Comedy Club here, with judge Siti Amirah Ghazali setting bail at RM20,000 with one surety and August 18 for mention.
In a video which went viral on social media, she claimed to be a Muslim and to have memorised 15 chapters (juzuk) of the Quran, before stripping off her headscarf and baju kurung to reveal a sleeveless top and mini skirt.
The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department has also conducted a preliminary investigation into the video, with its director Datuk Mohd Ajib Ismail saying that the probe had been carried out by Jawi’s enforcement division.
Alexander, 38, also maintained his innocence to two charges under Section 233(1)(a) of the CMA 1998 for uploading insensitive materials to online platforms and is facing a RM20,000 bail in total.
S. Sivaraj had told The Vibes then that the couple were struggling to gather the funds needed to post bail as their mobile devices and bank cards had not been returned to them.
“Their friends are trying to help them out but a sum of RM40,000 for both of them will require time and generous friends.”
It was reported yesterday that Crackhouse Comedy Club co-founder Rizal van Geyzel is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948 and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. – The Vibes, July 15, 2022

KUALA LUMPUR, 15 Julai (Bernama) -- Seorang lelaki yang ditahan reman kerana disyaki menyentuh sensitiviti dan berbaur perkauman semasa membuat persembahan di sebuah kelab komedi di Taman Tun Dr Ismail di sini, dibebaskan hari ini dengan jaminan polis.
Setiausaha Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin berkata lelaki berusia 39 tahun itu dibebaskan memandangkan siasatan terhadapnya telah selesai.
Beliau berkata lelaki itu direman sehari bermula semalam bagi melengkapkan proses siasatan dan kertas siasatan polis akan dirujuk kepada pejabat Peguam Negara untuk arahan selanjutnya setelah siasatan dari segala sudut selesai.
Difahamkan lelaki itu merupakan pemilik kelab komedi berkenaan.
“Siasatan dijalankan di bawah Seksyen 4(1) Akta Hasutan 1948 kerana mengeluarkan kenyataan yang berkecenderungan menghasut dan Seksyen 233 Akta Komunikasi dan Multimedia 1998 iaitu penggunaan tidak wajar kemudahan rangkaian atau perkhidmatan rangkaian,” katanya dalam kenyataan hari ini.
Baru-baru ini dua rakaman video yang dipercayai memaparkan lelaki terbabit melakukan persembahan komedi di kelab komedi itu, tular di media sosial dan mendapat pelbagai reaksi netizen.
Pada Rabu lepas, seorang wanita didakwa di mahkamah atas pertuduhan menyebabkan suasana tidak harmoni dalam kalangan penganut agama Islam ketika membuat persembahan di kelab komedi itu manakala teman lelakinya didakwa atas dua pertuduhan membuat dan memulakan hantaran video jelik di laman sosial.
Stand-up comedy case: Couple resorts to crowdfunding for RM40k bail

A woman and her boyfriend who were charged two days ago over the controversial stand-up routine at a comedy club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur last month are resorting to crowdfunding to raise the total RM40,000 bail for their release from custody.
When contacted, lawyer R Sivaraj confirmed that Siti Nuramira Abdullah, 26, and Alexander Navin Vijayachandran, 38, were forced to use this method as the bail amount was quite high relative to their humble financial circumstances.
The lawyer said so far, they only managed to secure a pledge of RM3,000 from other lawyers, non-governmental organisations (NGO), and members of the public.
“They have some savings in their bank accounts, but they are in prison, so they cannot access their accounts.
“Their neighbours (who are their bailors) said their hands are tied as they want to take out using a debit card but they do not know the pin,” Sivaraj said.
‘Separate satellite prisons’ The lawyer said their difficulties are accentuated by the fact that the couple is being held in separate “satellite prisons” for Covid-19 testing before they are respectively sent to their respective main prison lockups.
Sivaraj said Siti Nuramira is at the Kuala Kubu Baru satellite prison before she is to be transferred to Kajang women’s prison, while Alexander is at Beranang satellite lockup before he is to head to Sungai Buloh prison.
The lawyer added that they are still looking into which crowdfunding platform for the public to help contribute to raising the bail amount.
Sivaraj said this is because they seek a platform that facilitates an easy return of the donated sum back to their donors, following the completion of the couple’s court cases.
On Wednesday, Siti Nuramira and Alexander were hauled before separate courts to be charged in relation to her controversial stand-up routine at the comedy club.
Before the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, she claimed trial to causing enmity and ill-will with the open-mic routine.
Before the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court, Alexander pleaded not guilty to improper use of network facilities to transmit obscene communication in order to annoy another person.
Both courts then set bail at RM20,000 for each of the accused.
Previously, a video of a woman who took off her headscarf and baju kurung on stage at a comedy club had gone viral on social media.
Crackhouse Comedy Club said it banned the woman and her partner from the venue immediately after her stand-up performance and proceeded to lodge a police report.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall has since suspended the club’s licence. The suspension, however, received criticisms from comedians and netizens who believed the club should not be punished for the woman's action during an open-mic event on the premises.
