Gynae grief for Besut babies

KUALA TERENGGANU: A Barisan Nasional backbencher perked up an otherwise sedate assembly when he told the House there were women who got pregnant in Terengganu but gave birth in Kelantan.

Ramlan Ali (BN-Jabi) said the lack of gynaecologists and obstetricians at the Besut hospital had forced women from the Terengganu district to give birth in Kelantan.
Thus, he added, there were more babies from couples in Besut who were registered in the neighbouring state.
“Babies made in Besut will, in future, become citizens of Kelantan,” he said, leaving the House in stitches.

Ramlan made the remarks in response to a reply given to Muhammad Pehimi Yusof (BN-Kota Putera) by state Health, Unity and Consumerism Committee chairman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar. The state executive councillor had said that pregnancy cases considered high risk by Besut doctors were referred to the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital, the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital and the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital – all in Kelantan. This was due to the lack of specialists at the Besut hospital.

Rahman told the House that of 2,525 expectant mothers registered at the Besut hospital last year, 373 were referred to the Kelantan hospitals. In 2008, some 386 Besut women gave birth in Kelantan hospitals while 506 babies were delivered there in 2007.

Rahman said with the shortage of specialists at the Besut hospital and the proximity of Besut to Kota Baru, there was no choice but to refer the cases to Kelantan. Rahman told the assembly that the Terengganu government was working closely with the Health Ministry to woo more specialists to serve in Besut, a district bordering Kelantan.

tak rugi sebenarnya. Aku orang kelantan yang dah tinggal di terengganu lebih dari 20 tahun. Anak aku sorang dilahirkan di terengganu dan sorang di pahang...yang kelahiran pahang tu molek jah boleh duit dari Yayasan Terengganu sebab ibubapa dah lebih 10 tahun tinggal di terengganu.

dlm hal ni, terengganu banyak rugi....yang tinggal di paka/kerteh/kemaman (swasta lah), kebanyakkannya akan memilih Kuantan untuk bersalin sebab kemudahan hospital dan klinik swasta...mcm besut sebab lebih dekat di HUSM berbanding dengan hospital K.T.
