Goals and gaffes in the groups

Soccernet selects its best, and worst, moments from the third round of fixtures in the group stage at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Best Team Performance: Slovakia. While New Zealand impressed in getting their third point of the World Cup, Slovakia came second in Group F with their thrilling 3-2 win over Italy. A side built around the likes of Marek Hamsik and Martin Skrtel, it was striker Robert Vittek who caught the eye as he netted two goals to become the joint-leading scorer at the tournament. Qualification to the next round, and a clash with Netherlands, is mightily impressive.
Best Player: Keisuke Honda, Japan. Honda has driven Japan forwards and sealed their place in the second round with a stunning performance against Denmark. Lining up a free-kick 35 yards from goal, one commentator uttered 'He can't possibly shoot from there', but he did and the result was a superb goal that swerved past goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen. Commanding the Japanese attack, his unselfish pass to set up the third goal was excellent.
Best Game: Nigeria 2-2 South Korea. Okay, so Italy versus Slovakia may be the critics' choice, but for variety this game was just as good. Both sides have been shaky in defence and it showed when they clashed in the last Group B game. Uche started the scoring for Nigeria, before the Koreans hit back twice to give themselves a 2-1 lead. Yakubu missed the chance of the century, before then leveling coolly from the penalty spot and Nigeria continued to push forward to get the win they needed to qualify. They failed, but it was great to watch.
Gaffe: Yakubu. Nigeria v South Korea. An easier chance can not have been missed in the entire history of the World Cup. Getting himself into a great position in the box, the Everton striker found himself four yards out and on the end of a wonderful cross, but as he went to sidefoot the ball into an empty net it squirmed off his ankle and slid inches wide. Chris Iwelumo's gaffe for Scotland last year still lives long in the memory, but Yakubu has surpassed him.
Best Goal: Mesut Ozil, Germany v Ghana. With Germany needing to win the group, Ozil came to the fore with a stunning strike to give them a 1-0 win and seal their progress - setting up a game with England in the process. Taking a hard pass from the right, he controlled the ball well and pushed it out from under his feet before hitting a powerful shot into the roof of the net with his left foot. The future of German football will certainly be the subject of interest from Europe's elite clubs this summer.
Highlight: The fact that almost every game had something to play for was a joy. Late goals in the games for the USA and Italy provided the kind of tension that makes football great and there have been very few World Cups when so much has been on offer coming into the final round of fixtures. That the second round contains sides like Japan and Slovakia is a testament to just how tough the lesser nations have fought for their place in the spotlight.
Lowlight: For those who wanted to see the big seeds progressing, Italy and France's early exits provided an unhappy end to the round. More than just the lack of talent on show from these two former greats, the manner of their exits was disappointing to behold as it made one forget how good they once were. One expects the world champions to put up a fight to retain their crown, but there was little effort on show from Italy and the less said about France's demise the better.
Talking Point: The African nations. As only Ghana managed to make it through to the second round, many have been left wondering quite why the African sides have failed to impress after so much hype. A record six had qualified, but the powerhouses of African football - the likes of Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o - failed to fire for their sides and it was an immense disappointment to see them crash out. Their weaknesses have been the subject of much debate, but Cameroon legend Roger Milla (one of the more vocal former players in the game) maintained that it was down to "a lack of discipline and organisation''.
Ref Watch: The referees seem to have got a handle on those players seeking to deceive them by diving and have been excellent in dishing out yellow cards to offenders such as Portugal's Tiago. However, there have been far too many cards given for innocuous challenges. Yoann Gourcuff can count himself very unlucky to have been given his marching orders as France were knocked out, while the officials appear quick to brandish cards for the slightest of touches. After the flurry of yellow and red, it is easy to forget that football is a contact sport ... but it is.
Stat Attack: France and Italy became the first pair of previous finalists to go out in the group stages when both had qualified for the competition. |
