ESPN STAR Sports (ESS), Asia’s No. 1 sports content provider and John Dykes, the popular football presenter from ESPN STAR Sports’ stellar line-up of talent, have mutually decided to bring to an end their highly-successful 14-year relationship.
In that time, John Dykes has presented a range of sports programming, most notably around football on ESPN & STAR Sports. He has hosted popular discussion show Football Focus, newspaper review show First Edition and, ESPN STAR Sports’ match day telecasts around live broadcast of the Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup. He has also anchored coverage of FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships for ESPN STAR Sports.
During his time with the company, John’s interviews with the biggest names in football have featured in ESPN STAR Sports’ comprehensive line-up of original football programming. John’s unique, impartial style, his understanding of the game and his ability to get the best out of experts and pundits, have made him a very popular choice and a household name amongst the Asian fans.
John Dykes said of his decision to move on: “I feel extremely proud to have been a part of ESPN STAR Sports for such a long time. Over the last 14 years, it has been an honour both to grow in stature along with the company and to work with such a talented and passionate group of colleagues.
“I have taken the difficult decision to leave Asia, which I have called home for 25 years, for both personal and professional reasons. I will be taking my family back to the UK and the home of the Barclays Premier League, which has played such a central part in my career development at ESPN STAR Sports. I am delighted to be taking on a new position as a presenter with a content service, to be launched in August 2010, with the FA Premier League. I believe it is a tribute to the work I have been privileged to do at ESPN STAR Sports that I should have been considered for such a role.
“It is also a tribute to Asia’s football fans, a truly sophisticated and discerning audience. To consistently deliver to such a vast and varied audience, you need to be on top of their diverse preferences & tastes and I feel privileged to have learnt this from the way ESPN STAR Sports continue to create such customized and focused programming for the Asian audience.
“Today, more than 1500 hours of original football programming is developed at ESPN STAR Sports every year and all of this is customized to meet the needs of Asian fans – something which is unparalleled across the globe. I have had the most wonderful time presenting football and sport in general to the fans across Asia and I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for the support they have given me over the years. I take with me many happy memories.
John Dykes also sought to assure Asian football fans that they can expect more quality programming from ESPN STAR Sports. He said: “At ESPN STAR Sports, each show is conceptualized based on the specific yet diverse needs of different groups of fans. And, we as a big team of presenters, experts, pundits & producers work together to create content and programming that best meet their desires. With such a highly talented and experienced line-up of presenters and ESPN STAR Sports’ very focused and exciting plans for the future (starting with next season), I am fully confident that fans in Asia will continue to get the best and the most customized presentation possible.”
Manu Sawhney, Managing Director, ESPN STAR Sports, said: “For the last 14 years that John has been with us, he has made significant contribution along with our other presenters to reinforce our commitment to produce and present the most focused, customized and differentiated programming to our diverse fan base across Asia. We thank him for the commitment and passion he has brought to our presentation and while we are sad to see him go yet we are happy that he is now going to the home of European football and we wish him all the best.”
“John will continue to be a part of our presentation team for the remainder of the football season as we finalize our presentation for the next season that will continue to engage and entertain sports fans across Asia in our signature style of production that is today regarded as the Gold Standard in the industry”, added Mr. Sawhney.
