ST Kinetics' WARTHOG – Working For The Troops

London, 9 September 2009 - ST Kinetics announced at its media conference at DSEi that the WARTHOG will be delivered on schedule and with the first vehicles with the UK MoD from end 2009.  Dubbed "The Beast", it will provide enhanced performance and protection for troops in Afghanistan.

The WARTHOG is a development of ST Kinetics' Bronco All Terrain Tracked Carrier (ATTC), a robust and proven articulated platform with an unsurpassed payload of more than 5 tons.  Fielded in 2001, the Bronco ATTC has enhanced its users' effectiveness through better all-terrain mobility, higher protection, greater payload and increased efficiency while meeting the rigorous demands of modern warfare.  In December 2008, more than 100 Bronco vehicles, designated WARTHOG by the UK MoD, were bought from ST Kinetics in a deal worth over £150M.  Described by the UK MoD as "beast of a vehicle", WARTHOG's delivery will begin end of this year and serve UK Armed Forces in Afghanistan in 2010.

Mr Patrick Choy, Chief Marketing Officer of ST Kinetics, reiterated ST Kinetics' commitment to the WARTHOG programme, "Even before receiving the contract from UK MoD, we took the initiative to place orders for parts in order to ensure delivery meets required timeline.  In addition, we undertook tests as our own efforts to ascertain that the proposed system provides assured performance for the men in theatre.  The WARTHOG will be well-suited to its terrain and operational requirements."

To ensure the vehicle's performance in extreme heat and dust conditions, a Bronco configured to WARTHOG's combat load had successfully completed trials in U.A.E. recently.  With the objective of "running to failure", critical systems in the vehicle have been proven through demanding tests.

"By working with UK companies including Thales (UK), Permali Gloucester and Gallay Limited on various subsystems requirements, we are able to significantly reduce development time.  We are pleased to announce that progress on the WARTHOG programme is on track and the first vehicle will roll out on 28 Sep 09 in Singapore," Choy added.

Thales (UK) is responsible for the installation of UK theatre-entry specific equipment to the vehicles, including additional armour, specialist electronic counter-measure equipment and communication tools.

UK Armed Forces trainers will also begin operation and maintenance training this month, allowing them to start bringing the vehicles into service shortly after delivery.

The recent Exercise Northstar showcased the capabilities of the newly formed Special Operations Task Force (SOTF) as it worked together with other national security agencies to contain and overcome a "terrorist attack" on Singapore.

Mirroring the concurrent attacks seen during the Mumbai incident last year, this year's Exercise Northstar saw a 15-man terrorist group land in Singapore via various land and sea routes.

Splitting into groups of two to three men, they proceeded to their targets, which included hotels and shopping malls, to execute a series of coordinated attacks.

The terrorists took some hostages, barricaded themselves in a ballroom of Rasa Sentosa Hotel and made demands for safe passage out of the country.

What they did not know was that the SOTF had been activated. Using Super Puma helicopters from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and boats from the Naval Diving Unit (NDU), SOTF troops swept in and stormed the terrorists' stronghold. In a hail of gunfire, the terrorists were overpowered and the hostages freed in the dramatic finale of the exercise.

Tailor-made responses just a phone call away

The Northstar scenario was an example of multi-faceted security threats that confront countries all over the world today. To enhance its ability to respond to such threats, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has put its special operations units under a joint headquarters.

"With the establishment of SOTF, we are better able to handle any kind of security threat or incident that could harm homeland security," said Colonel (COL) Lam Shiu Tong, Commander SOTF and Chief Commando Officer.

All special forces of the SAF now come under the ambit of the SOTF. What this means is that the SAF is now able to quickly coordinate troops with specialised skills and customise its responses to threats speedily.

All special forces of the SAF now come under the ambit of the SOTF. What this means is that the SAF is now able to quickly coordinate troops with specialised skills and customise its responses to threats speedily.

This is further aided by the presence of planners from the Army, Navy and Air Force. These planners will be kept informed of incidents that may involve the SOTF. As a result, they can quickly call up, when needed, the appropriate resources from their respective Services to meet the specific requirements of the mission at hand.

"With the SOTF, all the special forces are literally a phone call away," said COL Lam.

Said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean: "The SAF has become more integrated, reflecting the multi-Service and even multi-agency approach that we take in operations."

Multi-role force

Besides its role in homeland security, the SOTF will also play a part in international security, particularly on the high seas as it has the capability to intercept ships suspected of carrying weapons of mass destruction.

This capability is complemented by the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) which allows forces from almost 100 states to intercept and detain materials found on board ships registered in the signatory nations. Singapore has been a part of the United States-led PSI since 2004.

The SOTF can also conduct evacuation and rescue operations. It is capable of rescuing hostages and even evacuating Singaporeans out of harm's way in any part of the world.

In the event of war, the SOTF troops can be deployed into enemy territory to conduct strategic operations.

Cross-trained yet specialised

Within the SOTF, the individual units will continue to be highly specialised forces. The NDU will drive doctrine development and training related to diving because they are the experts in this field. Likewise, the Commandos will do so for parachute operations.

The training to be a part of the SAF's special forces is set to change. Potential SOTF troops will now undergo the Special Forces Qualification Course where they will receive the necessary training to become part of the task force.

"We are not losing our individual identities as Divers and Commandos, but gaining a valuable partner in each other's skill sets," said COL Tan Tai Tiong, Commander NDU and Deputy Commander SOTF.

The SOTF will integrate the Army's Commandos, the Navy's NDU and other SAF combat forces under one central command.

The Mobile Adjustable Ramp System allows troops from the SOTF to gain access to the upper levels of buildings rapidly, saving precious time.

Under the SOTF's command, the Very Slender Vessel is a fast interdiction boat capable of speeds of more than 40 knots.

Terrex The Terrific

September 12, 2009: Singapore is buying 135 Terrex Infantry Combat vehicles (ICV). The first infantry units will receive them in February 2010. The 25 ton Terrex is optimized for urban environments. The U.S. Army’s use of the Stryker ICV and its success on the battlefield influenced the selection of Terrex, and subsequent modifications.

Costing $1.5 million each, the vehicle is externally similar to the Stryker, with 8 wheels and a remote controlled weapons turret atop the hull. The hull has a V shape for mine protection. The vehicle is 7 meters long (22.96 feet), 2.7 meters wide (8.85 feet), and 2.1 meters high (6.88 feet). The vehicle carries 13 soldiers and 2 crewmen (driver and commander), in its armored personnel carrier (APC) role. If a turret is used, 8 troops may be carried in addition to the driver and two men (commander and gunner) to operate the turret. Weapons such as the 25 mm cannon and 7.62mm machine gun are used against armored vehicles or structures. A 7.62mm machine gun is situated alongside and traverses with the gun. A 40mm Grenade launcher with 7.62mm machine gun may replace the cannon.

More ballistic protection is available in the form of bolt on or welded armor (slat, cage type), which is fitted alongside the hull for defense against Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG’s). If hit, the tires are designed for run flat operation and include a central air inflation system permitting the driver to control the amount of air in each tire. The driver sits in front to the left of the engine. Top speed is 110 kilometers per hour with a range of 800 kilometers. The vehicle is amphibious, using water jets mounted on either side of the rear hull to propels the vehicle at 10 kilometers per hour in the water.

Electronics a Battlefield Management System (BMS) which permits full awareness of a battlespace providing sharable information to other vehicles or soldiers. A Weapon Detection System (WDS) is provided to spot enemy fire. All information is displayed on colored screens in the commander’s position just aft of the driver.

The vehicle is intended for modularity and may be further configured into an armored recovery vehicle, mortar carrier, ambulance, 105mm mobile gun platform, and rocket launcher. In any configuration Nuclear Biological or Chemical protection is standard regardless of weather or combat environment.

Indonesia expressed the desire to acquire 420 vehicles with a license to produce it locally. Turkey has also licensed the vehicle for production.

The closest counterpart to the Terrex, the Stryker, is similar in specifications with a cost of 1.42 million per vehicle, length of 6.95 meters (22.92 feet), width of 2.72 meters (8.97 feet), and a height of 2.64 meters (8.72 feet). Weight is 16.47 tons (33,400 pounds). It has a speed and range of 100 kilometers per hour and 500 kilometers respectively. It may be configured in similar vehicle guises as Terrex and can carry identical armament. -- Mike Perry

SAF sends Weapon Locating Radar Team to Afganistan

From
http://www.mindef.gov.sg/imindef/news_and_...14sep09_nr.html
As part of Singapore's contribution to multinational stabilisation and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will deploy two 17-man Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) teams to a base in Tarin Kowt, the provincial capital of Oruzgan. The WLR deployment is for 9 months, with the first team deployed from September 2009 to January 2010, and the second team from January 2010 to June 2010. The WLR will provide early warning of rocket attacks and enhance force protection measures for International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) personnel at the base.

The SAF has made deployments to Afghanistan since 2007. A medical team was recently deployed from November 2008 to May this year, to provide emergency and trauma care, primary health care and ward capabilities at a field hospital in Tarin Kowt. A construction engineering team was also sent to Bamiyan province in April this year, to supervise the construction of a Paediatric and Women's Ward extension for the Bamiyan Provincial Hospital, as well as a security wall around the Provincial Administrative Building.

Singapore is`nt buying 135 Terrex IFVs. Singapore is buying at least 135 Terrex IFVs according to Singapore`s Mi ndef. Eventually, I expect the SAF to operate several hundred Terrex IFVs and perhaps even more, like the Bionix IFVs, as older equipment are replaced.

Hmmm, I dont mind selling to Indonesia. But the Terrex version that we are selling them must not come with the same internal equipment that we have. Will it give Indonesia an advantage over Malaysia? We need to consider that as well. I am a supporter of maintaining the status quo.

Edit: So, it is confirmed that Turkey has bought the Terrex?

err....singapore is not the only country that have this "internal thingy", South Korea, Israel, Jordan, Turkey, some European and ofcourse US, so maintaining the status quo make us lose money, instead of them buy somewhere else, might as well make money out of it, borong semua sekali......

C-Series Combat System from Terma to the Royal Thai Navy’s Landing Platform Dock

Integrated Systems/Defense

10 Sep 2009

http://www.terma.com/widepage.dsp?page=3233

London - Singapore Technologies Marine (ST Marine) awarded Terma a contract for the delivery of a C-Series combat system for the Royal Thai Navy’s (RTN) Landing Platform Dock (LPD)

Terma has been contracted to supply a combat system and a combat management system for this LPD. The combat system provides excellent surveillance and identification (both air and surface) as well as control of guns for self-protection, and the combat management system ties the system together in a fully integrated solution. The delivery includes the C-Flex, C-Search and C-Fire modules.

These three modules are all part of Terma’s C-Series naval combat system portfolio. C-Flex is the combat management system and the natural nucleus of C-Series. It will provide the RTN with a complete command and control capability in terms of situational awareness, multiple sensor management, monitoring features and threat evaluation operated from the multi function consoles on board.

C-Search is a radar and sensor suite. On Thailand’s new vessel, the system will consist of a SCANTER 4100 air and surface surveillance radar combined with an IFF system that provides identification to the air tracks of the radar.

C-Fire is the fire control system. Although the main purpose of the vessel is to provide aid and assistance to people who need it, it is essential that the LPD has the capability to defend itself. The Thai LPD will have three guns installed – one 76 mm and two 30 mm –controlled by C-Fire from the C-Flex multi function consoles.

The C-Fire Electro Optical (EO) Director has an inbuilt thermal imager, a TV camera, and an eye-safe laser range finder, and it is easily trained to a track from the situation display or manually by a joystick in the console. The EO Director can then be used for surveillance and identification of certain tracks. Upon hostile actions encountered by any surface or air target, C-Fire can go into engagement mode, and the operator can fire any of the ship’s three guns at the target. In case of hostile actions from both a surface and an air target, the system can engage both targets using the SCANTER 4100 radar for tracking the surface target and the EO Director for tracking the air target.

The combination of C-Flex, C-Search, and C-Fire makes up a 100 % integrated solution, which means that all subsystems can be operated from any one of the three consoles on the ship.

Three combat system modules have been put together to form a complete combat system for the Thai LPD. A Terma C-Series combat system can be designed to suit the needs of any client. In this case, the modules have been put together to create a system providing excellent surveillance and self-protection in addition to having a full set of command and control functionalities even for a small solution with three multi function consoles. Additionally, the contracted configuration allows for easy future expansions of the combat system.

In 2008, Singapore Technologies Marine (ST Marine) was contracted to build a Landing Platform Dock (LPD) vessel for the Royal Thai Navy (RTN). The LPD is a multi-role and multi-purpose ship specifically designed to provide the RTN with a strengthened capability in situations of natural disasters such as floods and tsunamis. The vessel will thus provide support to naval missions such as sea transportation, support operations, civil search and rescue missions, and disaster relief programs.

UK orders more STK 40 mm grenades
Fay Brigden

Advanced Material Engineering, a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies Kinetics (STK), has been awarded a SD6.6 million (USD4.6 million) contract to supply 40 mm low velocity grenades. The contract, announced on 8 September, was awarded by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The order follows an urgent operational requirement issued by the MoD in June 2009 for armour-piercing grenades, which stated that there was an immediate operational requirement due to the high level of use in Afghanistan.

Delivery of the ammunition is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2009 and run through to the end of 2010.

British Army gets new vehicles built in S'pore

The Warthog will make its way to the UK Ministry of Defence this year.

ST Kinetics, the land systems arm of ST Engineering, today unveiled the agile, versatile and armoured "beast of a vehicle" that will be delivered on schedule to the UK from the end of the year.

British soldiers in Afghanistan will be receiving better protection against mines, increased operational mobility, and higher payload when the Warthog All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) enter service.

More than 100 vehicles worth over 150 million pounds (about S$330mil) have been bought by the UK MOD in response to an Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR).

Anticipating a demanding timeline, ST Kinetics had on its own accord procured production materials and components ahead of the Warthog contract award.

To ascertain the vehicle's performance in extreme heat and dust conditions, the company had put a 19 tonne Warthog test-bed vehicle through desert trials in U.A.E. this summer.

A highly agile vehicle that can manoeuvre across difficult terrain, roll across trenches, tackle vertical obstacles, power-up steep gradients and even cling to slopes, the Warthog is based on ST Kinetics' Bronco All Terrain Tracked Carrier (ATTC), a platform that has been in operation since 2001.

The Warthog will come in four variants - Troop Carrier, Ambulance, Command, and Repair & Recovery. Vehicle deliveries will commence end 2009, with the majority to be delivered in 2010.

Brigadier Ian Simpson, DE&S Head of Combat Wheels Group, UK MOD, said: "The WARTHOG itself has proven itself to be a very capable vehicle in tests and trials. I am impressed by the high standards of engineering applied to this vehicle and the quality of the support package; providing our deployed forces with the higher levels of protection and mobility."

Twelve UK Armed Forces trainers have already begun operation and maintenance training in Singapore to allow them to start bringing the vehicles into service shortly after delivery.

S'pore firm sells all-terrain vehicle to UK for Afghan operations
By Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 28 September 2009 2053 hrs

SINGAPORE: A Singapore-built all-terrain vehicle has been customised to protect British troops stationed in Afghanistan.

The deal between the British Defence Ministry and ST Kinetics is worth S$330 million.

It does not have a pretty name, but ST Kinetics believes the Warthog will prove to be an armoured "beast of a vehicle".

The vehicle is designed to deal with the conditions in Afghanistan. Air-conditioning will help soldiers cope with the 50 degree heat, and special air systems to filter out the dust.

The Afghan terrain is also rocky and mountainous, but that is no problem for the Warthog, which can move up and down steep slopes. Its agility makes it hard for the Taliban to decide where to lay landmines and explosives.

MAJ (RTD) Jez Hermer, former British marine, consultant, ST Kinetics UK, said: "This vehicle is so mobile it can move off the roads, off the tracks and it can get up into the hills, the valleys and the mountains. It can be unpredictable and when a vehicle is unpredictable, it's extremely difficult to attack."

In July 2008, Britain's Defence Ministry came knocking with an urgent need to buy better vehicles for its troops. The procurement process was made under what's known as an Urgent Operational Requirement.

The Bronco has been in use since 2001 and clients include the Singapore Armed Forces and one regional country which the company declined to name. Land systems of this type normally take years to develop.

ST Kinetics based the Warthog on its existing Bronco vehicle, slashing development time. The firm will start delivering the 100 Warthogs by the end of the year.

This is the first time a Singapore-built defence platform has been sold to a NATO member.

Sew Chee Jhuen, president, ST Kinetics, said: "It places us on the world map as a global defence player and we hope that this then will open up the eyes of many other armed forces around the world to look at this as a potential vehicle for their own needs."

Each vehicle can be configured to carry out repair work, transport troops, and serve as an ambulance or command post. The capabilities of the Warthog can also be further increased to cope with other threats in the future. - CNA/vm

I believe the warthog was sold at a very good price just to break into the European market, especially with the customisation and support added in.

Notice that the armour is pretty thin at the side door. I guess protection is more on the front and under belly.

Two radar teams deployed to Afghanistan from this month
The Defence Ministry has confirmed the deployment of Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) teams to Afghanistan, to assist the multi-national effort led by NATO. The WLR system will indicate where rocket attacks on NATO troops originate from, thus providing an additional layer of defence.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean announced in June this year that Singapore is willing to provide further assistance to Afghanistan, with the consent of participating nations, and deploy WLR teams to the Afghan province of Oruzgan. Mr Teo made this announcement at a ceremony where he presented Overseas Service Medals to personnel who returned from a prior deployment to Afghanistan in June. The WLR system aims to provide additional warning for rocket attacks by insurgents, and will offer an additional layer of defence for NATO troops stationed there.
The Defence Ministry announced yesterday that the SAF will send two 17-men WLR teams to Tarin Kowt for nine months. The first team will depart this month and the second team will take over in January next year, until the deployment ends in June next year.
As the information is classified, the Mindef announcement did not reveal the specific WLR systems that will be deployed in Afghanistan. Although the Mindef website only mentions two WLR systems – the TPQ36 and TPQ37 models – the local media reported in June that the SAF will actually be deploying the Swedish-made ARTHUR system. ARTHUR stands for Artillery Hunting Radar.
This will be the first time Singapore is deploying combat units to Afghanistan. Past missions have only involved medical services and reconstruction efforts. Past deployments to the region have also lasted six months at most, thus this nine-month deployment will be the SAF’s longest yet.
The statement released by Mindef said that the WLR system provides warning against rocket attacks, and enhances force protection measures for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) personnel at the base.
Developed in Sweden, the ARTHUR system will be transported by the BV206 tracked vehicle, and can track the trajectory of rockets launched within a 40 kilometre radius. The advanced computer system onboard the ARTHUR can calculate the origin of the attack within seconds, and can coordinate return fire within one minute. This system can also determine if attacks launched by friendly forces have hit their targets.
The Alpha variant of the ARTHUR first entered service in 1999, while the Bravo model was introduced in 2004. The SAF might be deploying the Bravo model, despite news that Alpha test models were sold to a Southeast Asian nation, which was rumoured to be Singapore.
The Alpha model is usually deployed for detecting grenade launches within 20 kilometres and rocket launches within 30 kilometres. Each round has different firing characteristics, thus the system allows for a left-right buffer of 8 metres and 12 metres for front-back, when determining the origin of the launches. It can track more than 100 projectiles per second. The Bravo model has enhanced radar with a 25 per cent increase in tracking range, and can better track and calculate the trajectory of fired projectiles. It can also determine the calibre of the projectile fired based on its flight resistance, and use fuzzy logic to identify the target.
When compared to the TPQ models, the ARTHUR system is transported using the BV206 tracked carrier, thus it has a high level of mobility. It can also be transported by a C-130 transport aircraft of airlifted by helicopters.

The SAF first displayed the ARTHUR system at the 2004 Army Open House, with its most outstanding feature being the table-size radar antenna mounted on top of the vehicle. The Defence Science and Technology Agency had enhanced the radar’s capabilities and integrated a cooling system into the crew’s compartment. Each ARTHUR system is operated by 11 men and takes only five minutes to deploy.
