Unesco shortlists 12 world traditions that need urgent safeguards
PARIS: Twelve Traditions in eight countries, belonging to the World Intangible Heritage, and requiring urgent safeguard measures have been shortlisted by UNESCO.
Among the traditions selected by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation ) was a Corsican song called "Cantu in paghjella" and "New Year festival" of Qiang in China, the Algerian news agency (APs) reported.
At a meeting in Abu Dhabi that ends Friday, UNESCO Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage had already distinguished 76 practices and traditions that belong now to Intangible Heritage of Humanity, including tango from Argentina and Uruguay.
In the category for practices requiring urgent action, "States concerned will implement plans for specific safeguard" and "may also receive financial assistance from the fund created for this purpose," Unesco said.
In this category, UNESCO has classified profane and liturgical Cantu in Paghjella of Corsica oral tradition. The paghjella is traditional song sung by men in this French Mediterranean island.
According to the explanations of the UN organisation, "the paghjella has gradually lost its vitality due to the sharp decline in generation-to-generation transmission due to the emigration of young and loss of repertoire."
The New Year Festival of Qiang, which takes place on the first day of the tenth lunar month in the Chinese province of Sichuan, may also disappear.
"articipation in the festival has declined, as a result of migration, the decreasing interest of young people in Qiang heritage and impact of foreign cultures and the earthquake that devastated Sichuan in 2008 destroying many villages of Qiang, hence has seriously endangered the New Year Festival," notes the organisation.
The other practices that require protective measures are: rite of Tsars of Kalyady (Christmas Tsars) in Belarus, the construction of Wooden Arch Chinese bridges (China), the traditional textile techniques of Li (China), traditions and practices associated to Kayas in sacred forests of Mijikenda (Kenya), Suiti cultural space (Latvia), The Sanke mon: a rite of collective fishing in Sanke (Mali), Mongolia/Mongol Biyelgee: Mongolian traditional folk dance, Mongolia/ Mongol Tuuli: Mongolian epic, Mongolia/Traditional music of the Tsuur, and Vietnam Ca tru singing. - Bernama
