NEWS UPDATE!

Home-a-Pet: SPCA at IKANO:
A Brilliant Success!

SPCA's Satellite Adoption & Info Booth in IKANO Power Center was a remarkable success!

Held from the 23rd of May to the 15th of June, every Thursday to Sunday

during these weeks were fun-filled and highly gratifying,

not just for the wonderful Volunteers who assisted us,
but for the animals whose lives were saved!

59 animals were adopted during SPCA's 3-week stint in Damansara Jaya,

17 puppies, 33 kittens, 2 dogs, 5 cats and 2 rabbits found happy homes,

while 4 kittens and 3 puppies taken in by fosterers.
This is a 60% increase in SPCA's monthly adoption rate!

Funds raised through merchandise sales and donations
totaled to a whopping RM5300!

SPCA would like to thank IKANO Power Center for their support and

continuous assistance in helping us save more lives.
We would also like to wish a huge thank-you to the great

Volunteers who stood by our cause and helped us.
All love and happy smiles is always highly appreciated, and with our collective efforts more animals will be understood and
more lives will be saved everyday.

SPCA Inspectorate: Cruelty Case of the Week!

What happened?

Late last month, SPCA received a cruelty case reported in Subang Indah, Sunway Pyramid.

Upon inspection, it was noticed that it was the 2nd time this location was reported as being
run by a irresponsible and cruel animal owner. The report stated that a monkey was being kept as

a pet under cruel conditions.

What was the problem?

In the first inspection, it was found that it was a classic case of irresponsible
pet ownership. The house homed multiple cats in cages, while dogs

were seen tied to dustbins and left in poor condition. A large male monkey (pic: above)

was kept in a tiny cage. Unable to move and jump freely or rest in comfort, the monkey suffered
tremendously despite being well-fed. SPCA's Animal Inspector Cunera Kimlon, advised the owner
of the house to immediately improve the condition of the animals' lives.

During inspection of the second report, we discovered that all the cats were

released from their cages and were no longer in the compound of the house. The dogs
were also nowhere to be found. The monkey remained in the cage.

What was the solution? With the owner's refusal to present the license for the monkey, it was clear that
the only solution was to confiscate the monkey.

Due to SPCA's lack of resources to handle monkeys, we immediately forwarded

the case details to the Wildlife Department for further action in capturing the monkey.

And the moral of the story is...

Keeping a primate as a pet is just never a good idea.
Why? The risk of disease transfer, the inability of most people to meet the long term

physical and psychological needs of primates, and the fact that these are wild,
not domestic animals, all lead to the conclusion that primates simply do not make good pets.

Please do not purchase or support the sale of monkeys as pets.
Avoid contributing to the continuous industry of
creating miserable lives for more of these wonderful animals.

tak lama dulu kat SG, ada 3 orang lelaki kalah judi, dorang gi mabok mabok pastu sesuke ati pukul anjing peliharaan orang sampai separoh mati, pastu lagik teruk dorang gi panggang anjing tu ALIVE! gilaaaaa arrr manusia skang ni, masok court sehh kes gila tu, tak silapnyer kene masuk penjara 3 orang tu, PLUS kene sebatan PLUS denda PLUS community service, hehe, seriously, tak cukop seh hukuman tuh.

weh korang tau tak segelintir US marines kat Iraq n Afganistan tuh sangat la suke membunuh anjing anjing FOR ENTERTAINMENT!!!! what the F***!!!! eeee marah betol aku! baru lagik, ada insiden yang sangat sangat sangatlah controversiol melibatkan 2 orang marines yang DENGAN SENGAJA dan DENGAN KEJAMNYA membaling seekor anak anjing ke dalam lembah, tinggi sak bukit tuh, dorang gelak gelakkan anak anjing yang dorang baling ke bawah tuh, BODOH arrrr marines nih! kes ni kat Iraq, ada video yg VERY DISTURBING kat youtube. sape tahan tengok la, aku menggeletar tengok video tuh, sampai ati dorang baling anak anjing tu, mesti terhempas teruk punye, menjerit jerit anak anjing tuh, aku rase ringan je kaki time tengok video tu, bengkerk siotttt!!!

pastu satu lagik insiden kat Iraq gak, ada stray dog tuh jalan jalan kat bahu jalan cari ape tah, all of a sudden, ada la askar RETARDED mane tah pegi BOM anjing tuh! meletop sak anjing tuh, and dorang boleh KETAWA????? OWH DEAR GOD! banyak lagik insiden lain yg dorang sengaja aniaya dan membunuh anjing FOR ENTERTAINMENT, banyak yg suke suke tembak anjing, i mean like WTF!!!! eeeeeee geram siot!

member aku penah cerita, ada manusia RETARDED ni, dia bungkus kucing dia yang mengandung dan masukkan dalam guni dan campak guni tu masuk lombong!!! eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, why people are so cruel towards animals!!! eeeeeeeee tak boleh terima sakk, tak bley behave ke? aduiiii....

DVS Putrajaya Puts In Place

Humane Guidelines for Stray Management!

With the support and encouragement from animal welfare advocates nationwide, SPCA Selangor has been lobbying the government for several years now to set humane standards for dog-catching, pound management and euthanasia by municipal councils. We've heard the stories - stray dogs left hot and hungry in trucks for days on end, dog-catchers entering into house compounds and catching pet dogs, and overcrowded dog pounds where healthy, injured and sick dogs are mixed together. In November 2007, SPCA submitted our 'Humane Guidelines for Stray Management, Shelter & Euthanasia' document, which was well-received by the Department Of Veterinary Services (DVS), Putrajaya. On the 26th of May 2008, DVS organised a Stray Management Seminar for local municipal councils where the department introduced their "Garis Panduan Penangkapan Dan Pelupusan Anjing Terbiar" (Humane Guidelines on Stray Management) to the local councils, veterinary associations and animal welfare NGOs. The document contains detailed information on humane pound management, dog catching, transportation, euthanasia and highlights the Five Freedoms For Animals!

In late June 2008, the DVS wrote to the State Governments, recommending the usage of the Humane Guidelines as a reference in carrying out stray management activities in their respective areas - humanely. On behalf of animal lovers, animal welfare advocates and the animals, SPCA would like to thank DVS Putrajaya for the pro-active measures in ensuring the welfare of stray animals, and commend them on a job well done !

Super-duper Pat-A-Pet 2008!

SPCA would like to thank the amazing students at Chong Hwa independant School for organising the "Pat-A-Pet" Day on the 6th of July 2008 at their school! The group of 60 student volunteers carried out various activities such as a colouring competition, photography session, exhibition on animal cruelty, seminar on animal welfare and a drama highlighting the exploitation of animals for entertainment and for the illegal wildlife trade! Our two SPCA pups Willie and Marley managed to find new, loving homes while we managed to raise RM900 from merchandise sales and donations. To top it all off, local hip-hop star Danny Wan performed for the students and talked about being kind to animals during the interval! We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the principal Mr Huang, Ms Sharon, the dedicated organising Committee, the wonderful volunteers and all the students and parents who came to show their support!

Who Forgot To Let The Dogs Out?

You've probably seen them on the news already- these two Rottweilers were left behind by PI Balasubramaniam when he left the country suddenly earlier this week. SPCA received many SMSs, e-mails and phone calls from concerned members of the public, who read about the plight of these two dogs in the local newspapers and wanted to ensure that they were being fed and taken care of. Members of the media were camped outside the house, waiting to see if anyone came to feed the dogs. Our Inspector went to investigate further on Thursday, and found that a kind neighbour had been feeding the dogs daily, and letting them out of their cages at night. However, the cages had not been cleaned in two days. The neighbour was adviced to clean the cages regularly to ensure the dogs are comfortable and clean, and also to let the dogs out of the cage for the most of the day to ensure they have the freedom of movement. She apologized for neglecting to clean the cages and exercise them, and said she would take care of them well from now on. SPCA will be following up on this case, and we would like to thank all of you for your vigilance and concern!
