Chelsea stars set for exit as fire sale looms

By Matt Hughes
Wednesday April 16 2008

CHELSEA are planning a mass clear-out of players at the end of the season, irrespective of what happens to Avram Grant. It's rumoured that as many as 10 first-team squad members could leave Stamford Bridge in what would be the most dramatic upheaval since the unprecedented summer of spending immediately after Roman Abramovich bought the club five years ago, WRITES MATT HUGHES.

Grant and Abramovich are united in the belief that Chelsea's squad needs a substantial overhaul, although whether the first-team coach will be around to undertake the process is unclear.

With many fans openly hostile and some players privately unconvinced, Grant's position remains precarious.

But Grant himself is understood to be confident of keeping his job and has begun planning for the future, with Abramovich ready to release substantial funds to buy world-class players. The Israeli considers the squad he inherited to be unsuited to his requirements and several players have been told that they can move on.

Andriy Shevchenko, Claudio Pizarro, Steve Sidwell and Tal Ben-Haim will be put up for sale, with the futures of more established players such as Florent Malouda, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Carlo Cudicini and Juliano Belletti uncertain. With Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Wayne Bridge unsettled, the number of departures could reach double figures.

Chelsea's biggest problem is likely to be finding clubs willing to match the wages they pay to fringe players, some of whom have lengthy contracts, while the heavy losses they will have to accept on transfer fees will hit their hopes of reaching their break-even target by 2010. Shevchenko, for example, is worth only a fraction of the

Drogba May Be Sidelined For CL Semi

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is in a race against time to be fit for next Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg against Liverpool.

Chelsea's bid to make it third time lucky against Liverpool in a Champions League semi-final could be hit by the absence of star striker Didier Drogba, who is reportedly struggling to be fit in time.

According to The Independent, the Ivory Coast skippoer is carrying a knee injury that is stubbornly refusing to respond to treatment. Chelsea's priority now is to get their talismanic striker fit to play at Anfield next week.

Drogba was ruled out of the Blues' damaging 1-1 draw at home to Wigan on Monday, a result that meant Chelsea squandered their game in hand over Manchester United, from whom they are now five points adrift.  United, who will themselves have a game in hand over Chelsea after Thursday, when the Blues take on Everton at Goodison, also boast a vastly superior goal difference to the Londoners.

The pressure is building on Avram Grant personally, particularly from the Chelsea crowd, so the prospect of being without Drogba at Goodison tomorrow is a major blow for the Israeli coach.

He will be fervently hoping that Drogba can recover in time to line up against Liverpool, because United's advantage in the Premier League leaves the Champions  League as Chelsea's most viable option for silverware this season.
