PLACE OF INTEREST

Thebest place to appreciate Kelantanese culture and crafts is the capitalcity, Kota Bharu. A bustling town famed for its ornately decoratedtrishaws, Kota Bharu offers numerous attractions for the visitor.

:: GELANGGANG SENI (CULTURAL CENTRE)
Locatedon Jalan Mahmud close to the Perdana Hotel, the cultural centre is averitable showcase of the living heritage of Kelantan. Demonstrationsof popular folk arts and pastimes are held daily. Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry) shows, Silat (the Malay art of self defence) performances, Gasing (Top spinning) displays, Wau (Kite flying) and Rebana (Giant Drum) playing can all be seen at the centre. Evenings see cultural performances featuring traditional Malay music and Wayang Kulit.
  •                 Thecultural centre is open three times a week from March to October eachyear. Performance times are 3.30pm to 5.50pm on Monday, Wednesday andSaturday and 9.00pm to midnight on Wednesday and Saturday.


:: HISTORICAL ZONE
Themain cultural and historical zone of Kota Bharu is situated along JalanHilir Kota and Jalan Sultan where many museums and heritage buildingsare located. Some museums charge a nominal fee for admission.

:: ROYAL MUSEUM / ISTANA BATU
TheIstana Batu (Brick/Stone Palace) was constructed in 1939 during thereign of Sultan Ismail. It houses the Royal Museum and was previouslyused as the venue for royal weddings and as a guest house for visitingroyalty.
  •                 TheRoyal Museum now serves as a repository for the history of the Kelantanroyal family and displays regalia, pictures, silverware, furniture andpalace items of former Sultans. Opening times 8.30am to 4.45pm daily -except Fridays.


:: WORLD WAR TWO MEMORIAL / BANK KERAPU
Originallyconstructed in 1911, Bank Kerapu is now a repository for documents,pictures and military paraphernalia of the Japanese Occupation from1941 to 1945. During the war, the building served as the headquartersof the Japanese Kempetai, the feared secret police.

:: HANDICRAFT VILLAGE & CRAFT MUSEUM
Whilethe Craft Museum houses many fine examples of Kelantanesecraftsmanship, the adjacent Handicraft Village provides visitors thechance to see just how these crafts are made. Demonstrations oftraditional embroidery, songket weaving, batik printing,silver work and wood carving are carried out by skilled artisans. Theirproducts are also in sale at the centre.

:: STATE MOSQUE
Constructionof this mosque was completed during the reign of Sultan Ismail IV afteralmost a decade of work. Also known as the Al-Muhammadi Mosque or the'Brick Mosque', it is the centre for Islamic missionary activities inthe state.

:: ISTANA BALAI BESAR
Builtby Sultan Muhammad II in 1840, the Istana Balai Besar was formerly theresidence of past Sultans. However, it is now used solely as a venuefor official state functions. The palace boasts a large audience hall,a throne room and a fine collection of royal regalia.

:: ISTANA JAHAR
Builtin 1887 by Sultan Mohamad II for his grandson, Long Kundur, the IstanaJahar has been transformed into a museum featuring Kelantan's culturalheritage. Photographs and a great variety of artefacts bear testimonyto the rich Kelantanese cultural legacy. The building itself is lacedwith intricate wood carvings, serving as an example of the finecraftsmanship of local artisans.

:: ISLAMIC MUSEUM
TheIslamic Museum traces the history of Islam in Kelantan. Exhibitsinclude Islamic Arts and Crafts and photographs of some of the personalbelongings of Prophet Muhammad and Islamic historical sites. The museumreflects not only the importance of Islam in Kelantan but also theposition of the state as a centre of Islamic learning.

:: STATE MUSEUM
TheState Museum located along Jalan Hospital incorporates the State ArtGallery. The building itself was utilised as the land office fromcolonial times until 1990 when major renovations were carried out toconvert it into a museum. The museum documents the arts, crafts andmusical traditions of Kelantan. Ceramic displays testify to the earlytrade with China and artifacts from local archaeological sites provideevidence of the existence of the pre-historic age in Kelantan.

:: OTHER PLACES
Otherinteresting sites in Kota Bharu include Merdeka (Independence) Square,State Government offices and raft houses along the river banks.
TheSutan Ismail Petra Arch is a beautiful landmark in Kota Bharu. Neraby,Padang Merdeka or Merdeka Square is a historical landmark. Situatedwithin is a World War I memorial that pays tribute to fallen warheroes. It is also the site where the body of Tok Janggut, one of thecountry's most famous nationalists, was hung. Originally named PadangBank, it was renamed Padang Merdeka (Independence Square) after thecountry's independence in 1957.

:: PANTAI CAHAYA BULAN (BEACH OF MOONLIGHT)
Formerlyknown as Beach of Passionate Love, this is one of the most popularspots for some refreshing coconut water and local snacks while enjoyingthe sea breeze. The route to the beach is dotted with thriving cottageindustries. Watch batil and songket textiles being made or get yourselfa beautiful pareo or scarf. Wau or the giant kite is another popularitem found here. Many comfortable chalets are available at the beach.
:: PANTAI SERI TUJUH (BEACH OF SEVEN LAGOONS)
Locatedin the Tumpat district close to the Thai border, this pristine beach issheltered by the longest lagoon in Malaysia. Home to the annualInternational Kita Festival, the beach has a variety of food and drinkstalls as well as public amenities.
:: PANTAI SABAK
Aswell as being a rendezvous for fishing boats, Sabak Beach boasts finegolden sands fringed by coconut palms. It is a perfect spot to picnicand relax while observing the return of the fishing boats. Gentle waveslap the shore while the water is warm and clear.
:: PANTAI IRAMA (BEACH OF MELODY)

Approximately30km south of the capital in the Bachok district, Pantai Irama offerschoice picnic spots and eating stalls. It is reputed to be one of themost beautiful beaches along the East Coast.
:: PANTAI BISIKAN BAYU (BEACH OF THE WHISPERING BREEZE)
About50km from Kota Bharu in the Pasir Puteh district, both north and southof the village of Semerak, the gentle breezes rustle the casuarinaneedles producing a hushed sound. Surfing can be good at certain timesof the year, and wind surfers will find excellent sports.

KAMPUNG NELAYAN (FISHING VILLAGE)
Avisit to one of Kelantan's quaint fishing villages should not bemissed. Two well known villages are Kuala Besar and Kampung Sabak, bothonly 15km from the capital.
Fishermennormally put out to sea at dawn and return in the early afternoon tosell their catch on the beach. Haggling over prices and the sorting andweighing of the catch provide an interesting cacophony against thepicturesque backdrop of gaily painted boats lining the beach.

:: BULUH KUBU COMPLEX
Knownas a centre for Kelantan's batik provide the multidesign and style ofbatik printing. The 3 storey building was designed as open market withflowing air circulation and located apposite with Tax and RevenueOffice in Kota Bharu mid city.
:: RANTAU PANJANG FREE TRADE ZONE
Dutyfree shops at Rantau Panjang is famous with the products from Thailandsuch as clothes, food, fruits, kitchen apparatus and other houseaccessories. This location becomes the attractive place for Kelantantourists to purchase large quantity of product with cheap prices.
:: PENGKALAN KUBUR FREE TRADE ZONE

PengkalanKubur also gazzetted as Free trade areas which offers various productof Thailand and it's famous with kitchens apparatus such glassware,accessories, clothes and other high quality electric products withlower price compared to Rantau Panjang.
