A nameless country is in a state of chaos as natural disasters, corruption, and street justice rise. Part of the people grow more violent, the other part hope for the arrival of a promised leader. A cop named Eros is investigating the case of five men who were burnt to death by a mob after somebody screamed 搕hief攁t them. A journalist named Janus is also covering the story. The two are quickly drawn into a labyrinth of mysteries and murders.
Janus accidentally discovers a secret. But everyone he tells the secret to soon finds a terrible death. When Eros also finds out of it, they both know that one of them has to die, unless they can find the promised leader before the angel of death arrives.

Negeri antah berantah (miripIndonesia) yang jadi latar film ini memang diceritakan tengah dalamsituasi zaman edan. Chaos dan ketidakadilan membayangi kehidupan masyarakat negeri itu. Semua orang menjadi stress dan ganas.
Tanpa disadari, penyelidikanEros dan Janus terjebak dalam labirin penuh misteri dan bahaya. Janusyang menderita narcolepsi, tak sengaja menjadi satu-satunya orang yangmengetahui sebuah rahasia penting. Setiap kali menceritakan rahasia itukepada orang lain, maka orang itu akan mati dengan mengerikan. Jalinan intrik pun tambah rumit dengan keterlibatan mantan istri Janus, Sari(Shanty) dan Ranti (Fahrani), penyanyi yang kehilangan seluruh anggotakeluarganya. Legenda dan ramalan kuno akan mengurai semua misteri yangterjadi. Seorang Ratu Adil akan hadir sebagai superhero.
Tak seperti film-film Indonesia lainnya, Anda tidak perlu mencari pesan tersembunyi atau misi-misi sosiol tertentu saat menonton film ini. Anda juga tidak perlu mengernyitkan dahi karena logika film yang patah-patah atau karena akting yang hysterical atau weird.Film ini membangun alurnya dengan sangat natural dan logika filmterjaga dengan sangat hati-hati. Artistik dan sinematografinya juga digarap dengan sangat detail dan seksama. Walhasil, kita bisa menyaksikan hiburan 2 jam yang beautifully crafted, mencekam dan tanpa perlu terlalu banyak berceramah.
Joko Anwar抯 Kala, just out in Malaysian cinemas, has been deceptively labelled as a noir thriller, and it certainly had me thinking it was a hard-boiled detective story. But what a complete surprise the first half-hour or so turns out to be.
Kala isn抰 just a noir crime thriller. It has elements of horror, fantasy and political intrigue. It抯 a nice mix, with gorgeous visuals and a creepy and disturbing atmosphere, but it also has a huge problem towards the end.
I loved Janji Joni, Joko抯 2005 loving ode to cinema, a colourful story about a guy who delivers film reels to cinemas who finds his daily routine becoming a desperate race against time and a quest for love. It抯 one of the most original films I抳e seen, and certainly one of the best films to come out of Indonesia. You could see how much Joko is influenced by Hollywood cinema, from the Fight Club-like opening minutes to the old-time romance at the heart of the film.
But don抰 expect the same feel-good-ness in Kala. This is one very dark, very ominous and graphically violent film. The first two-thirds of it is almost like Dark City as envisioned by Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
The story takes place in an unnamed republic where political tension is at an all-time high, where mobs are going wild with rampage and indiscriminate killings. It抯 never made clear what the problems in the country are, but Joko clearly paints a portrait of a society quickly degenerating into civil unrest, apathy, corruption and blind rage, a society on the brink of swallowing itself whole. Eros, the archetypal hardened noir detective, or who seems to be one at first, is investigating an incident where five men were burnt to death by a mob while witnesses stood by watching. One of the dead guys has a spider pendant around his neck. In comes Janus, a reporter who pursues the same case. Janus has just been through a divorce because he抯 narcoleptic and can抰 satisfy his wife (he falls asleep every time they抮e about to get it on).
Janus tries to interview the wife of one of the five victims, but something tragic happens before he can do so. Later he discovers the name of a mysterious location, uttered by the woman earlier when she had visited the morgue, and captured on a tape-recorder he had hidden in the morgue. One of his friends listens to the tape and later meets with a grisly end after being haunted by the unsettling apparition of a pale man. And as Eros delves further into the mystery, he too begins to see the apparition. Meanwhile, Janus discovers that a lot of people are after the name of that mysterious place, and gets kidnapped by gangsters one night.
Joko plays with noir conventions, but sometimes he turns some of them on their heads, such as the hard-boiled detective who turns out to be not so typical nor so straight. The world the director creates feels extremely real, full of dilapidated buildings and decrepit apartments, and smoky underground jazz bars and rain-soaked streets. The disturbing atmosphere, draped mostly in dusky light, is very, very unsettling, and Joko punctuates the moments with equally dreary music. This looks like a ghost world, where people move through the shadows like lost spirits, and the air has the mossy taste of a tomb. Joko takes the shadowy noir setting and builds it into the perfect backdrop for horror.
From the very first frame, you抎 know that you抮e watching a very unusual, offbeat thriller. The story keeps you guessing at every turn. Clues are dropped, characters are introduced who add to the web of intrigue, and there抯 constantly the feeling that there抯 a huge surprise waiting just around the corner. The supernatural and the noir sit so well together in Joko抯 hands that it seems like a forgone conclusion that they抮e natural partners in crime.
But as the mystery gradually unravels, so does the story, losing itself to some degree of video-game incongruity.in its suddenly hip ending. The wonderfully realised atmosphere gives way to a stylised, hipped-up idea of archipelago myth and mysticism, with a touch of sword and sorcery. Suddenly, from Raymond Chandler-meets-Clarke Ashton-Smith in an Alex Proyas city, we抮e right smack in Resident Evil territory. It抯 a very bizarre direction to take, and one that makes the ending seem like it抯 from another film.
But there抯 no denying Joko抯 visual artistry here, and his ability to build a palpable, otherworldly mood and atmosphere. Despite the strange turn of events at the end, Kala is still quite a film, and definitely something very different. I don抰 believe I抳e seen anything from Indonesia quite like it. It抯 worth checking out for its seamless mix of noir, horror and a good old detective yarn. Just watch out for that ending!

Tidak ada sedikitpun tanda-tanda dari Arisan!, Janji Joni, atau Jakarta Undercover yang mempersiapkan kami untuk menerima KALA, sebuah film yang rasanya dibuat oleh seorang scientist gila yang sesukanya mencampur berbagai macam formula. Di tangan yang salah, ini bisa jadi bencana. Di tangan Joko Anwar, hasilnya adalah sebuah formula baru yang sulit didefinisikan. Tapi jika orang bersedia menelannya, mereka akan merasakan sensasi luar biasa yang akan berujung dengan cinematic orgasmo. Seperti yang kami bilang, it抯 a mind*****.
Di antara film-film generic buatan dalam negeri, sulit dipercaya ada penyandang dana yang mau memberikan uang kepada Joko Anwar untuk membuat film seperti ini. Kami menyatakan salut kepada MD Pictures,terlepas dari kenyataan bahwa logonya hampir terasa seperti efek bawang putih pada vampir.
Dunia buatan Joko Anwar adalah sebuah negeri yang mencekam, dengan orang-orang yang tidak berperikemanusiaan, dari mulai rakyat biasa yang bahkan tidak bergeming saat seorang perempuan menggendong bayi jatuh mengejar bus di waktu hujan, sampai ke menteri yang menyiksa dan membunuh orang untuk mencari kekayaan. Aneh, karena biarpun Joko Anwar mendandani karakter-karakternya dengan outfit barat, semuanya terdengar familiar. Ini adalah negara kita.
Joko Anwar menyampaikan keluh kesahnya dengan sangat stylish, dengan referensi buat film buff yang kami rasa tak ada habis-habisnya, walaupun kami langsung menontonnya dua kali. Selalu ada yang baru yang kami temukan. Kami tidak akan menceritakan ceritanya dengan lebih detil. Percayalah,semakin sedikit anda tahu tentang cerita KALA, semakin nikmat anda menontonnya. Yang perlu anda dengar: ini adalah sebuah film mencekam yang akan membuat anda mencengkeram pegangan kursi anda.
Ini adalah pertama kali kami menyaksikan sebuah film Indonesia di mana semua departemen bekerja dengan kompeten. Akting, art, sinematografi,musik, sound. Sadar atau tidak, film ini telah dengan fatal telah menaikkan benchmark film Indonesia. Kami ngeri untuk masuk ke bioskop untuk menonton film Indonesia berikutnya. Ini adalah sebuah pencapaian yang luar biasa,terlepas dari beberapa kelemahan teknis yang kami yakin disebabkan oleh keterbatasan anggaran.
Kami tidak sabar menunggu apa yang akan dibuat Joko Anwar berikutnya.Untuk itu, kami hanya memberikan 4,5 bintang untuk KALA. Tapi, untuk semua yang terlibat dalam pembuatan film ini: SALUT!

ngak setuju donk....Kala memang best, perjalanan cerita buat kita fokus...tak boring, kita sama-sama dibawa ke alam KALA...element thrill dan seramnya menjadi... tapi sayangnya ending dia merepek...so Janji Joni is better....takat ni JJ adalah yg terbaik dari Joko Anuar...
P/S: AKu rasa aku adalah antara 5 penonton awal yg menonton KALA di wayang di sekitar lembah kelang...mungkinkah ? atatau ada juga pawagam lain yg menayangkan KALA pada 10 Januari lalu ?
