What is it with Malaysian moviegoers and local horror films. Instead of cringing in their seats or closing their eyes, they LAUGH! Imagine that. And if it's a local comedy, will they cry? Well, it happened a couple of weeks ago at "Possessed" and it's happening again at "Seed of Darkness". Let's get to the bottom of this mystery...

Could it be the director's fault? Considering this is Michael Chuah's feature film directional debut, perhaps not much can be expected out of him. Then again, he has won a number of film awards including Best Experimental Film (silver) and Best Short Film (bronze) in the 2002 Malaysian Video Awards. With these accolades, you can expect "Seed of Darkness" to be watchable, even if it is not entirely satisfactory. The movie may not appeal to the masses but for a local horror film (and with a director making his debut), it's not such a the film bad film. So, nope. Don't think it's the director's fault...

What about the cast? Consisting entirely of new or inexperienced stars (except for regular TV/commercial actor Alvin Wong), credit should be given to them for braving this movie, especially since it's of the horror genre. Former beauty queen (and still looking as beautiful as ever) Wong Sze Zen gave a solid performance as a single mother who gets crazier and more paranoid by the minute. The other notable mentions are Alvin Wong, who manages to make himself look both innocent and sinister at the same time, and 10-year-old Leong Juin Juin, who outshone everyone else on the set despite her young age. As for the rest of the cast, their performance is mediocre and my only thought on this is that they should just stick to their singing and modelling careers instead. Conclusion: is the cast the reason for the comedy? Not really, despite the flaws here and there.

Perhaps it is the plot. A single mother undergoes an 'in-vitro fertilisation' in order to have a child of her own. She then moves into a new apartment and strange things starts happening that involves herself, her child and her neighbours. What follows are numerous unexpected twists and turns, with a finale equivalent to that from "The Sixth Sense"! May get draggy at times due to unnecessary dialogues and scenes, but the creepy background music and sound effects can keep you from falling asleep. So, it's not the plot either.

Lastly, let's look at the special effects in the film. Typical of any other horror film, we have the usual dark parking lot, self closing doors and drawers, as well as ghosts in the mirror, cupboards, beds and now, even the washing machine. Heck, there's even an 'original-looking' long-haired green-skinned girl although she only makes one or two appearances and is not vital to the plot. This is definitely the closest they can get in making the audience laugh as I myself couldn't resist a snigger or two.

In the end, there is really no explanation as to what has tickled the audience's funny bone. All I can say is, "Seed of Darkness" is one of the best local horror films so far (and there aren't many of them, I might add). However, if compared to other Asian horror films, we still have a long way to go but we are definitely off to a good start with this film. At least it can boast of being the first local Chinese movie to be picked up by an international distributor. On a final note, I guess I will just have to remember to bring my packet of tissues the next time I go for a local comedy in the cinemas.

dah tgk tadi (kirenye ni movie pertama aku kat wayang utk 2007)... overall biasa la... takde la sebodoh cam Possessed tu... dan satu lagi a bit slow....

ending die aku kurang paham skit, tapi aku buat2 paham gak.... dan satu lagi tak seram sgt....

pada sape2 yg mharapkan nak keseraman yg best, just avoid movie ni sbb tak seram sgt pun... tapi kalau amik kire perkara lain, movie ni ok la, just biasa2 je...











saje nak cite, masa aku tgk cite ni tadi, aku tgk kat TGV Bukit Raja Klang... ada la sorg makcik tu, amboih, siap bancuh kopi dalam wayang... igt berkelah ke apa.... pastu ada 2 org mamat ni menguap kuat gile dalam wayang, dah la cite tu slow dan senyap, so bile buat apa2 mudah didengari.... tau la cite tu bosan, tapi cover2 la menguap tu.... :lol

aku tak sabar2 nak keluar panggung. heheh.

tapi, filem ni okay sebenarnya. cuma, diorang tersilap promo sebagai filem seram. 18PL lagi (gabungan seram + ganas?). filem ni bukan filem seram. watak hantu tidak wujud langsung. kejutan2 biasa tu ada la sikit...

filem ni lebih menekankan kepada kesan psikologi dan hal-hal yg membabitkan pemikiran seseorang (watak utama) yg mengalami tekanan mental yg kuat akibat 'sesuatu' (takleh bagitau, spoiler)

Citer tu psl..dia hired maid.. dan maid ni selalu bermain or bergurau dgn anak lelaki tuan dia...tanpa disedari anak lelaki tu sebenarnye dah mati...dan ada citer disebalik la..anak lelaki dia ni dulu pernah cam merogol maid dulu ....
