50 YEARS OF POPULAR LOCAL MUSIC - Milestones set takes shape
-by ADLY SYAIRI RAMLY -

IT has always been a genuine music lover? dream to own a five-CD box-set featuring the milestones of popular Malaysian music.
The dream will soon come true as the Recording Industry Association Malaysia (RIM) and Persatuan Akademi Industri Muzik Malaysia (PAIMM) are working on the project.
Last week, The Malay Mail suggested a collaborative effort from the Malaysian music industry, to come up with a box-set documenting the best of popular Malaysian music over the last 50 years.
When RIM chairman Sandy Monteiro was contacted to comment on the suggestion, he said the compilation is already in the making.
?e?e gone beyond thinking about it.
We have come up with the track-listing for fi ve CDs containing a total of 100 songs, all milestones of popular Malaysian music over the last 50 years.
Each CD will feature the best 20 songs of each decade,? Monteiro said.
On when local music lovers will get to see the yet-to-be-titled box-set in the record stores, Monteiro said, there are still a few matters that need to be fi ne tuned.
?ur biggest concern now is whether the public will buy the set? The cost of producing it is not going to be cheap and we can? simply release it if no one is going to buy it,? he said.
Monteiro, however, said that RIM and PAIMM are trying their best to ensure that the project will materialise.
He also urges the public and music lovers to show their support when it does.
?enuine music lovers in other countries are more than willing to pay for box-sets.
Hopefully Malaysians will do the same,? he said.
Other music industry players also gave their thumbs up to the project.
PAIMM general manager Jennifer Thompson said: ? think it? an excellent idea.
It? defi nitely going to be a wonderful collector? item across the board.?
Karyawan president Freddie Fernandez said: ? think it? an idea the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry would love to be involved with, if it materialises.?
Before this, there was no local collective effort made to document the development of popular Malaysian music.
In 2003, a Dutch record company put out a compilation Steam Kodok: 26 A Go Go Ultrararities From The Sixties Singapore and South East-Asia Underground featuring music by Malaysian music trailblazers like Kassim Selamat & The Swallows, Rosnah and The Siglap Five and Mike Ibrahim and The Nite Walkers.
In July, a British label released The Rough Guide to The Music of Malaysia compilation featuring music by Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Zaleha Hamid and Rosiah Chik.
If the idea does take off, it cannot come at a better time than in 2007 as next year is going to be Malaysia? 50th year of independence.
