One of the greatest discoveries in the history of archaeology was made last summer, off Japan There, spread over an amazing 311 miles on the ocean floor, are the well-preserved remains of an ancient city. Or at the very least, a number of closely related sites.

In the waters around Okinawa and beyond to the small island of Yonaguni, divers located eight separate locations beginning in March 1995. That first sighting was equivocal - a provocative, squared structure, so encrusted with coral that its manmade identity was uncertain. Then, as recently as the summer of 1996, a sports diver accidentally discovered a huge, angular platform about 40 feet below the surface, off the southwestern shore of Okinawa. The feature抯 artificial provenance was beyond question. Widening their search, teams of more divers found another, different monument nearby. Then another, and another. They beheld long streets, grand boulevards, majestic staircases, magnificent archways, enormous blocks of perfectly cut and fitted stone - all harmoniously welded together in a linear architecture unlike anything they had ever seen before.

In the following weeks and months, Japan抯 archaeological community joined the feeding-frenzy of discovery. Trained professionals formed a healthy alliance with the enthusiasts who first made the find. In a progressive spirit of mutual respect an working alliance, academics and amateurs joined forces to set an example of   cooperation for the rest of the world. Their common cause soon bore rich fruit. In september, not far from the shore of the island of Yonaguni, more then 300 airline miles south from Okinawa, they found a gigantic, pyramidal structure in 100 feet of water. In what appeared to be a ceremonial center of broad promenades and flanking pylons, the gargantuan building measures 240 feet long.

Exceptionally clear sub-surface clarity, with 100 foot visibility a common factor, allowed for thorough photographic documentation, both still photography and video. These images provided the basis of japan抯 leading headlines for more than a year. Yet, not a word about the Okinawa discovery reached the US public, until the magazine, 揂ncient American

rasanya bukan sebab masalah ilmuan Barat x iktiraf semata-mata, tapi disebabkann pengaruh ajaran Yahudi/kristian/Bible...

maksud saya, kalu rujuk kajian sejarah menurut tarikh dlm Bible, kehidupan manusia wujud kat Bumi x lebih dari 6,000 thn. Penemuan ni mungkin berusia lebih dari 10,000 thn. Kalu lebih dari 6,000 thn, konsep ajaran kat dlm Bible dgn sendirinya tertolak. siapa yg bina binaan ni?? Jadi disebabkan tu, ilmuan Barat lebih suka jadikan perjalanan sejarah selari dgn ajaran dlm Bible. Ilmuan ni mungkin pendirian mereka dgn ajaran Bible kuat n x mahu ia bertentangan dgn ajaran yg dianuti.

Mungkin ilmuan yg berfikiran x selari dgn ajaran dlm Bible ni kebanyakannya seorg atheis, menyokong teori evolusi. Tapi saya percaya kewujudan manusia kat Bumi ni lebih dari 10,000 thn. Manusia mula menggunakan pelapik kaki/kasut  sekitar 8,000 thn yg lepas, takkan lah hanya 6,000 thn je. Give me a break, give me a break basikal lah...

p/s just my opinion, x ada kena mengena dgn mana2 ajaran agama :nerd:

Tak salah itu. :ah:
Utk lebih kurang 250 tahun, Sejarah Barat mengajar generasi2 mereka yg Mesir merupakan tamadun yg paling awal sekali (selaras dgn andaian yg Hebrew pernah dijadikan hamba disitu).

Banyak lagenda2 serta kepercayaan orang Timur telahpun mengatakan yg ada makluk lain yg tinggal di bawah lautan yg lebih maju dr manusia sejak dulu kala (malahan sebelum Manusia moden - Homo Sapien) mula berkembang. Akan tetapi, Sejarahawan moden tak akan ambil perduli akannya kerana ianya memang bercanggahan dgn fahaman mereka.

Mungkin ilmuan yg berfikiran x selari dgn ajaran dlm Bible ni kebanyakannya seorg atheis, menyokong teori evolusi.

:hmm:

Undersea explorer finds new evidence of great flood

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The first evidence that humans lived in an area now covered by the Black Sea -- perhaps inundated by the biblical flood -- has been found by a team of explorers.

"Artifacts at the site are clearly well preserved, with carved wooden beams, wooden branches and stone tools," lead researcher Robert Ballard said.

"We realize the broad significance the discovery has and we're going to do our best to learn more," Ballard said in a telephone interview Tuesday from his ship off the northern coast of Turkey, west of the community of Sinop.

Artifacts found at the bottom of the Black Sea. The beam, left, shows signs of being worked by tools or implements

Fredrik Hiebert of the University of Pennsylvania, the team's chief archaeologist, said the discovery "represents the first concrete evidence for occupation of the Black Sea coast prior to its flooding."

"This is a major discovery that will begin to rewrite the history of the cultures in this key area between Europe, Asia and the ancient Middle East," Hiebert said.

The remnants of human habitation were found in more than 300 feet of water about 12 miles off the coast of Turkey.

From freshwater lake to saltwater sea
Many ancient Middle Eastern cultures have legends of a great flood, including the Bible story of Noah.

Columbia University researchers William Ryan and Walter Pittman speculated in their 1997 book "Noah's Flood" that when the European glaciers melted, about 7,000 years ago, the Mediterranean Sea overflowed into what was then a smaller freshwater lake to create the Black Sea.

Last year Ballard found indications of an ancient coastline miles out from the current Black Sea coast. The new discovery provides evidence that people once lived in that now inundated region.

Ballard, a National Geographic Society explorer in residence, said he studied shells found along the ancient coastline and found two types. One group is an extinct type of freshwater shell, while the second is from saltwater shellfish.

The saltwater shells date from the present back 6,500 years, while the freshwater shells all date to 7,000 years ago and older.

"So we know that there was a sudden and dramatic change from a freshwater lake to a saltwater sea 7,000 years ago," he said Tuesday.

"And we know that as a result of that flood a vast amount of land went under water.

"And we now know that land was inhabited. What we don't know is who these people are, we don't know how broad their settlements were ... but we're expanding our studies to try to determine that."

Structures found in underwater river valley
Ballard said his team, using remote-controlled underwater vessels with cameras, located a former river valley beneath the sea, and in the valley was the collapsed structure. Remains include preserved wooden beams that were worked by hand.

The structure was "clearly built by humans," and was characteristic of stone-age structures built 7,000 years ago in the interior of Turkey, Ballard said. It contained a stone chisel and two other stone tools with holes drilled through them, he said.

Nothing has been removed from the site. "When you first find a site you don't just run in there and start picking up things," he said.
The group is now mapping the site and looking for other structures in the area.

Two objects, possibly tools, with holes indicating they were drilled by a human, provide new evidence that humans faced a great flood

"This is a work in progress," Ballard said. "It is critical to know the exact era of the people who lived there, and to that end we hope to recover artifacts and wood for carbon dating so we can figure out what sort of people lived there and the nature of their tools."

The discovery occurred within coastal waters of Turkey, whose Directorate of Monuments and Museums has a representative on the research vessel

Ancient cities found beneath the waves of Mediterranean

A diver surveys the ruins beneath the Mediterranean Sea.

Archeologists have uncovered the ruins of three ancient cities beneath the waves of the Mediterranean Sea near Alexandria, Egypt. The cities - Herakleion, Canopus and Menouthis - were until now only known through Greek tragedies and mythology.

Each city was renowned for its lavish architecture and culture. References to the cities in ancient writings indicate they were important centres of trade in the Eastern Mediterranean world and that residents lived a luxurious and decadent lifestyle.

"Those must have been very important sea ports," says Robert Leprohon, and Egyptologist at the University of Toronto. "They're right on the coast. And we certainly know from lots and lots of evidence that there was incredible free trade at the time."

A team led by Franck Goddio, a French archeologist, worked for two years in the Bay of Aboukir, about 20 kilometres from Alexandria, uncovering the ruins.

With the help of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities - the top archeology body of the Egyptian government - Goddio's team developed an electronic underwater map of the area to help them find the ruins. The water where the cities were discovered is between seven and nine metres deep.

The cities were built in the 7th or 6th Century BC, during the waning days of the Pharaohs, which ended when Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in 332 BC. In their survey of the area, archeologists were stunned to find preserved houses, port infrastructure as well as temples and giant statues paying tribute to both Egyptian and Greek gods.

Archeologists found the remains of three cities dating back to at least 2,500 years ago.

Herakleion was probably the most important city economically and culturally in the Eastern Mediterranean until the founding of Alexandria in 332 BC. The city is mentioned frequently in ancient texts. The Greek historian Herodotus visited Herakleion in 450 BC and wrote about its temple dedicated to Hercules. And Greek mythology tells of a visit by Menelaos, King of Sparta, upon his return from the conquest of Troy.

Over the centuries, the cities became a mecca for various religions. Temples dedicated to Egyptian gods, such as Isis and Osiris, shared the cities with monuments to Greek legends like Hercules. A basilica and two sanctuaries containing the relics of St. John and St. Cyr indicate that the cities still thrived when Christianity swept through the Mediterranean centuries later.

Despite the discovery, it's unclear when and why these three cities ended up underwater. But natural catastrophes, like climatic and geophysical changes to the Nile Delta, plus a rise in sea level are the main suspects.

"A lot of cities that were harbours are underwater because the whole coast is slowly being eroded," says Leprohon.

Some of the columns and walls in Herakleion looked like they had collapsed - evidence that perhaps an earthquake shook the city into the sea.

In any case, archeologists think the cities went under for good sometime in the 7th or 8th century. Divers searching the ruins found coins and jewelry from that era, but nothing from a later time.

Gaballa Ali Gaballa, the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Egypt's top archeology body, called the discovery "the most exciting find in the history of marine archeology."

For the most part, the ruins will not be disturbed. Only a few small pieces and artifacts will be recovered and displayed in museums.

mysterious underwater ancient cities in china

City walls  are still standing after 40 years beneath the water

The downtown area of Sui'an County is generally known as Shi City (city of lion literally in Chinese). Built 1,800 years ago in 208, the city is now located in the Maotoujian Region of the Thousand Islets Lake, 40 kilometers (km) from Thousand Islets Lake Village.

The tourism organizations of the Thousand Islets Lake had some experts and professional divers research the underwater cities in 2002. The researchers confirmed the specific location of the ancient city by using maps before and after the lake's formation, as well as information from various sources. Meanwhile, three diving spots were chosen. After the second dive, some exciting information reached the experts.

A section of the ancient city wall, which was built along the hill, was found 20 meters underwater. The wall, which was primarily believed to be the section around the west gate, was very well preserved. Also, some wall bricks, tiles and tableware were salvaged. On the third dive, a beam, bricks, walls and civil houses still intact were found 30 meters underwater

The research was then ended to protect the safety of the divers, as at the time, although the lake surface temperature was 32 Celsius degrees, the underwater temperature was only 17.

This research unveiled the general situation of these underwater cities. Research and investigations followed. Experts reckon that these two relics are very possibly the best-preserved and largest clusters of ancient constructions.

The houses of the two ancient cities are made mostly of bricks, wood, stones and tiles. Modillions, painted walls, and well-regulated streets all characterize the cities with their own special flavors. In Chui'an City (He City), there is a 2.5km long avenue paved totally by stones. In Sui'an City (Shi City), there is also a well-organized transportation system including the East, West, North and Cross streets. Tall walls are built around the city for a defensive purpose.

Characters engraved on stones are still visible

The West Street is a major commercial street linking the West Gate and the County Yamen Gate in the city's center. Stores and residences abounded along it in history. Sonar detections demonstrated that a lot of tall buildings built in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties were still here.

Based on the photos and videos taken by divers and underwater robots, the outline of the West Street was generally intact. A thick layer of silt covered the four to five-meter-wide road. Historical records show that the street was once a commercial center that held a number of variety shops, old-style Chinese banking houses and restaurants.

But due to the many years of erosion by the stream current for many years, some houses have collapsed, leaving just their frame. But to the surprise of many, the divers discovered a few two-storied buildings were in very good condition although algae covered the walls and wooden windows. The outer walls were covered by cobbles.

Divers investigated one of the buildings. Inside some wooden stairs were still standing firmly. On the second floor, the furniture was in their original places. The divers even found some china and other everyday articles. The exquisite woodcarvings on the eaves demonstrated the consummate craftsmanship of the time. On the floor inside the room, a mouth leading to the basement was found, but for safety reasons, the divers did not go inside.
