TWO mothers got into trouble with the law yesterday for harshly punishing their sons over their homework.
One of them burnt a 10-year-old with a hot iron while the other slashed at an eight-year-old with a chopper.
In the first case, a 30-year-old divorcee was sentenced to four months in jail for using a hot iron to 'discipline' her son at her Jalan Bukit Merah home in March last year.
She was ironing clothes when the boy asked her for help with his homework.
She found out that he had answered some questions wrongly and lost her temper. To punish him, she burned his left arm with the hot iron.
Two months later, she hit him with a belt. This charge was taken into consideration.
Defence lawyer Rudy Gunaratnam said in mitigation that the boy was very naughty and rebellious, had behavioural problems in school and disliked being reprimanded.
When the mother scolded him, he glared at her. This was not the first time he had done so, he added.
In a moment of anger and frustration, she grabbed his hand and brought it to the tip of the iron for a split second.
'She firmly believed that what she did was the only way to stop him from glaring at people and make him realise that he must change his unruly behaviour,' he said.
He said his client had always loved and cared for her son and has been distressed ever since she lost custody of him to her former husband last May.
District judge Victor Yeo said the courts took a serious view of parents abusing their children, especially as they were defenceless.
He noted that the injury was quite severe as it had been inflicted with a heated iron, and a fine would be wholly disproportionate.
In another court, a 28-year-old woman admitted using a chopper to slash her eight-year-old boy on his left forearm at a relative's flat in Bedok North Avenue 4, at about midnight on Feb 14, 2001.
She was in the kitchen flipping through his homework when she found out that he had not completed it. Reeking of alcohol, she confronted the boy and was dissatisfied with his reasons for not finishing his homework.
She could not find a cane to discipline him. Agitated and frustrated, she grabbed a 22cm-long chopper from the sink and slashed him on the left forearm.
A second charge of slapping him will be taken into consideration when she is sentenced on May 5. |

Aku konpem, ni budak mesti geng trouble maker, ada dia punya geng trouble maker kat luar dah hasut dia....
Dah jadi tak betul, siap ngan sabotaj guru besar dia yang nak ubah cara dia.

tak silap aku, dulu zaman kampung, kalo parents atau guardians hantar budak2 pegi belajar agama ke apa ke...

budak2 grows up ok je....jadi disiplin...

Principal steps down after hitting student

THE principal of Nan Chiau High, Mr Ng Lee Huat, 53, is stepping down after admitting to hitting a student with a book.

The Education Ministry (MOE) said yesterday that it had accepted his offer to step down as head of the secondary school in Sengkang, but some parents and students were upset by his departure.
They called the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan which manages the school to ask if he could be reinstated.
Mr Ng, who had been in the teaching service since 1975, had hit the Secondary 2 girl on April 15.
A police report was later made by the god-sister of one of five students who had, together with the girl, been called up by Mr Ng.
MOE did not disclose what the girl was disciplined for, but said: 'Hitting a student, no matter how testing the circumstances of disciplining the student, cannot be condoned. This is unacceptable action that is outside the guidelines governing corporal punishment in schools.'
Principals and teachers are free to decide on the appropriate punishment to give students who have done wrong.
But corporal punishment is used only as a last resort and for serious offences such as assault.
Even then, schools have to follow strict guidelines. For instance, only the principal or a delegated member of the staff can administer it, in front of a witness.
In this case, the upset parents alleged the girl had often defied school rules.
One parent, who gave his name only as Mr Tan, told The Straits Times: 'Why is it that students are given a second chance, but not principals?'
His daughter, who is also in Sec 2, said the girl, in her 1 1/2 years at the school, has been disciplined more than 20 times for truancy, being late for school and disruptive in class.
Another parent, who did not want to be named, said Mr Ng had seen the school through some bad times, about five years ago, when it faced dwindling enrolment at its old site in Kim Yam Road.
But since its move to Sengkang, enrolment has returned to 1,460 students.
Under Mr Ng, the school also won the value-added award for two years, in 1999 and 2000.
The Today newspaper had also reported that Mr Ng's departure took the girl's mother by surprise. She said she had met Mr Ng over the incident and accepted his explanation and apology.
Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan officials however said they have to accept Mr Ng's decision. They also said that Mr Ng was an employee of MOE.
The ministry said Mr Ng would be redeployed to a position where he can continue to contribute to education.

Toddler dies after physical and sexual abuse
PETALING JAYA - A two-year-old girl died after being physically and sexually abused, allegedly by a close relative.
The girl, Norizayani Amilya Ahmad, died on arrival at the Sungai Buloh Hospital on Tuesday.
Initial investigations revealed that she had bruises on her body, including on her private parts.
A source said a family member had been interviewed by the Welfare Department recently, after neighbours complained that Norizayani had been abused.
When asked about the girl's bruises, the relative claimed she had sustained them in a fall.
The source said police had also interviewed the toddler's babysitter and her parents.
District police chief Datuk Ghazali Md Amin said the police were waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death.
'If there are going to be any arrests, it will depend on the report,' he said.
The toddler was taken to the hospital by her parents after she began to vomit at home.
A report was lodged at the hospital's police beat base by a doctor who examined the girl and noticed bruises on her body, including her private parts.
Her parents, from Damansara Damai, had employed an Indonesian maid but she was sacked over the weekend.
The maid, 28, was sent back to the agency and is believed to be still in the Klang Valley.
Before hiring her, the couple had placed their daughter in the care of a babysitter in the same housing estate. |

A doctor who examined the girl noticed the bruises on her body and private parts. A police report was lodged.
The case has been classified as murder, pending the outcome of a post mortem.
Norizayani's father, a 27-year-old production manager, and his wife, a 24-year-old assistant credit controller, also have a three-year-old son, Iskandar Daniel.
'Up till now, I haven't been able to sleep because my daughter has not been buried,' said Norizayani's mother, who wanted to be known only as Norhayati to Berita Harian.
Both Norhayati and her husband declined to comment about what happened to the girl.
District police chief Datuk Ghazali Md Amin told reporter that initial investigations showed that the girl's body bore bruises all over.
Police also believe the girl had been sexually abused as there were tears and abuse marks on her private parts.
'Our investigations showed that the girl had been hurt by a hard object being inserted into her private parts,' said Datuk Ghazali in Harian Metro.
'She also suffered serious injuries all over her body and probably died as a result of them.'
Datuk Ghazali said the girl's parents claimed they were not aware of their daughter's injuries.
He added that no arrests have been made as investigations are still going on.
The police say that Norizayani had stayed with several baby-sitters in the past.
Since she was one, she had been looked after by her grandmother in Kelantan. In December last year, she was enrolled in a childcare centre near the family home.
After that, she was passed to a male relative, before being put under the charge of the Indonesian maid.
One of Norizayani's aunt's, Ms Sarila Ibrahim, 22, told Harian Metro that when the girl was one-month-old, she had been accidentally scalded with hot water.
'Hot water had splashed onto her while her mother was busy preparing milk in the kitchen,' said Ms Sarila, a student at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
Ms Sarila used to look after Norizayani.
'She was a smart, active baby. But when I saw her recently, she didn't seem as cheerful as she was before,' said Ms Sarila.
The family's neighbour, who wanted to be known only as Mimi, 23, told Berita Harian that she last saw Norizayani on Friday when the maid brought the children to a nearby park.
'I used to look after her, before her parents got a maid. Compared to her elder brother who plays easily with other children, she seems a little less active and more timid,' she said. |

Guess who loses out with principal's departure
IT WAS not too long ago that students were punished for offences far less severe than insolence and rowdy behaviour.
Back in the early 1980s, when I was a pupil at the now-defunct Ang Mo Kio North Primary School, I was often punished physically for things as trivial as forgetting to bring my textbooks.
How times have changed. According to my teacher friends, students not bringing their textbooks to school or not turning in their homework on time is now routine. In fact, it would be highly unusual if everyone were prompt in their assigned tasks.
Yes, times have changed and physical punishment is now inexplicably frowned upon. Yet why do I remember fondly my 6B form teacher, Mrs Eunice Ow, who used to pinch me - one of her top pupils - for making a variety of mistakes? She was strict but it did not take long for me to realise that her 'corporal punishment' reflected her immense concern for me to do better.
These days, teachers are having a hard time disciplining students who are cognizant of their 'rights'. That was already the case when I did a stint of relief teaching at a primary school a few years ago. Being in charge of the rowdiest class, I had pupils spitting in front of me, pointing their middle finger at me and female pupils gleefully taunting me that the school could not touch them because they were girls.
The departure of Nan Chiau's principal causes dismay because an unconcerned principal would never have anything to do with students, no matter how ill-disciplined they had been.
Education should never be dictated by black and white rules. However, rules should be respected even if their value may be questioned and the principal has definitely erred according to the stipulated 'rules'.
Yet, one wonders if the principal could not be disciplined in other ways. I am sure many Singaporeans will agree that his departure can only harm the student(s) of Nan Chiau High School ultimately.

Without discipline there is no learning, teaching
HAVING been in the field of education for more than 20 years, I read Ms Chiu Mung Hing's letter, 'Preserve dignity of teachers' (ST, April 28), and reports about the stepping down of the principal of Nan Chiau High with dismay.
One fundamental principle of education is that discipline comes before teaching or learning. Herein lies the problem in many contemporary education systems throughout the world.
Parents, teachers and students must under-stand that without discipline there is no real learning or teaching. A teacher, by virtue of his position, has every right to discipline a student.
Students can score all the As in exams, but if they have no discipline or respect for authority, our nation will soon go to the dogs - which is what is happening in many parts of the Western world.
Hopefully, the movers and shakers in our education system will put this very basic principle in place for the sake of Singapore's future.

Don't spare the rod
I agree with Ms Chiu Mung Hing ('Preserve dignity of teachers'; ST, April 28). I don't know Mr Ng Lee Huat, but I think Nan Chiau High just lost a leader who might have been the reason why some children are there in the first place.
Common sense seems to have taken a back seat these days. Mr Ng had shown extreme patience with the student. She was not expelled even though she had been counselled more than 20 times.
I recommend all parents to read the first chapter of former President Wee Kim Wee's book, Glimpses And Reflections. The magic wand - otherwise known as the cane - might just save this child.

WRONG MESSAGE:
I read with disappointment MOE's acceptance of the principal's offer to step down. What is the message that is being sent to the public? That the principal has no right to lose his cool, no matter how trying the girl had been? That pupils can never be 'touched', no matter how defiant?
My four siblings and I had had books flung out windows, ears and hair pulled, arms pinched, and all these for small offences, such as uncompleted homework and excessive talking. It never dawned on our parents (least of all, god-sisters) to stir up a storm in a teacup. In fact, it never dawned on us to complain to our parents. We would have been told: 'You deserved it.' And that's how we grew up to be resilient, and to be introspective when things go wrong. We also learnt to be respectful of authority.
Reinstate the principal and suspend the girl(s).
