AAP Fact Sheet

Baby Walkers are Dangerous!

    * Baby walkers send more than 14,000 children to the hospital every year.
    * 34 children have died since 1973 because of baby walkers.

Children in baby walkers can:

    * Roll down the stairs - which can cause broken bones and head injuries. This is how most children get hurt in baby walkers.
    * Get burned - a child can reach higher when in a walker. A cup of hot coffee on the table, pot handles on the stove, a radiator, fireplace, or space heater are all now in baby's reach.
    * Drown - a child can fall into a pool, bathtub, or toilet while in a walker.
    * Be poisoned - reaching high objects is easier in a walker.
    * Pinch fingers and toes - by getting them caught between the walker and furniture.

There are no benefits to baby walkers

You may think a walker can help your child learn to walk. But, in fact, walkers do not help children walk sooner. Also, some babies may get sore leg muscles from spending too much time in a walker. Most walker injuries happen while adults are watching. Parents and other caregivers simply cannot respond quickly enough. A child in a walker can move more than 3 feet in 1 second! Therefore, walkers are never safe to use, even with close adult supervision. Make sure there are no walkers at home or wherever your child is being cared for. Child care facilities should not allow the use of baby walkers.

If your child is in child care at a center or at someone else's home, make sure there are no walkers.

Throw out your baby walkers!

Try something just as enjoyable but safer, like:

    * "Stationary walkers" - have no wheels but have seats that rotate and bounce.
    * Play pens - great safety zones for children as they learn to sit, crawl, or walk.
    * High chairs - older children often enjoy sitting up in a high chair and playing with toys on the tray.

As of July 1, 1997, new safety standards were implemented for baby walkers. Walkers are now made wider so they cannot fit through most doorways and can stop at the edge of a step. But these new walker designs will not prevent all injuries from walkers. They still have wheels, so children can still move fast and reach higher.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association for Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) have called for a ban on the manufacture and sale of baby walkers with wheels.

Keep your child safe - throw away your baby walker.

Norsha n my hubby both decided taknak beli walker tapi we think it's much better sb our maid takde choice..so, dia kena train our baby untuk menyulur etc..now my baby 6 mths..dah laju menyulur sana sini..which for us rasa puas hati sb our kids before tak penah lalui that stage sb our maid selalu simpan dalam walker..;)

studies pasal using walker and effects on development (note that this is only looking at development, all the safety risks are still there). edited to make it shorter - full article at url

http://www.icpa4kids.org/researc ... kers_newsletter.htm

What do the studies suggest?
Siegel and Burton published an article in the Journal of Developmental Behavior where they conducted a study of 109 infants' between the ages of six to fifteen months (2). The study compared users verses non-users and analyzed their motor and mental development. The data concluded that infants who used walkers, also sat, crawled and walked late, and scored lower on the Bayley scales of mental and motor skills than the non-walker group.

Crouchman studied 66 infants, divided into three groups according to length of time spent using the baby walkers (3). It appeared that there was no difference between all three groups with the onset of sitting or walking. However, infants in the higher-user group revealed a significant delay in the onset of prone locomotion compared to the low or non-user groups. The study suggested that the exposure of some infants to excessive use of the baby walkers might alter their ability to engage a pathway of normal locomotor development.

..........

Not all studies support that developmental delay will occur when there is the usage of the baby walkers (3). One study analyzed 15 pairs of twins suggesting that the use of baby walkers did not influence the onset of independent walking (7).

When comparing studies, there appears to be more evidence to suggest that baby walkers interfere with the natural process of locomotor skills and may be a cause of developmental delay.

There is a definite need for more studies, which should include larger group sizes and randomized control trials over previous observational or questionnaire based studies.

baru 3 bln dah masuk dlm walker. kesiannye. bukan baby 3bln tak kuat tulang belakang lg.
pada mimpi jgnlah camtu sakit baby tu. kalau nak masukkan dlm walker
pun tunggulah tulang dia dah kuat. memanglah nampak ok je.
tapi takut effect pertumbuhan tulang baby tu. kita memanglah tak nampak.

ish..3bln? sian budak tuh. moi nih anak nak setahun dah, walker tuh pakai kejap2 jer masa nak suap makan ngan nak masuk dapur, bila dia boring letak bawah biar dia nak merangkak ker manjat ker...walker nih kadang2 jer guna. pagi tadi dgr ceramah kat opis oleh Dato' dr. Noorlaily Dato' Abu Bakar, pakar kanak2..walker nih tak digalakkan pakai, coz otak baby tak dapat digunakan sepenuhnya. sebenarnya masa baby digalakkan kita tiarapkan baby tuh supaya mata dia dapat fokus ke semua arah..kajian menunjukkan budak yg juling boleh diatasai jika ibubapa slalu praktis kan anak slalu tiarap. jika kita lihat, anak bila kita telentangkan or baring, mata dia hanya mengadap syiling or lampu sahaja, so mata boleh juling, bila meniarap, kepala cepat bergerak kiri n kanan n mata pon boleh fokus banyak benda...banyak yg moi pelajari sepanjang ceramah pagi tadi...thanks to my opis coz bawa sorang penceramah dgn topik yg amat bagus...

me pakai walker jugak..sbb handy bila nak kasik makan sambil tgk tv. slalu my son mkn kat high chair, tp skali skala mkn kat living hall, duduk la dlm walker kejap. kalau tak..tak larat nak mengejar satu rumah dgn panjat tangga nye lagi.
mmg pakai walker tak digalakkan sgt tp mesti ngan full adult supervision. even me kat sini fully carpeted n walker tak leh pergi laju, tapi takut jugak dia keluar sendiri, so adult supervision tu penting.

kakcik nak pakai walker ni pun sbb my MIL dah mengeluh, anak lasak sangat.nak panjat kerusi la,jatuh la so ingat nak beli walker jenis yang kakcik ckp tu la. maybe jenis ni safe sbb kita boleh terbalikkan roda tu so walker jenis ni kira mcm tempat duduk dia la. anak kakcik lum boleh duduk sendiri.
