Onus on homeless shelter to check on speakers, says minister’s aide

PETALING JAYA: The federal territories ministry has urged homeless centres to check on any outsiders who enter the premises, following public backlash against a “motivational speaker” who was seen making harsh comments towards a homeless person.
An aide to federal territories minister Annuar Musa said centres should also monitor outsiders to ensure that they do not harm the homeless who were living in these shelters.
Referring to the incident which took place recently at the homeless centre in Jalan Pahang in Kuala Lumpur, the aide clarified that the speaker was neither appointed by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) nor the ministry.
“He was part of an NGO who came to conduct an entrepreneurship programme.
“We advise those managing the homeless centres not to invite just any outsider, and if there are speakers who come, they must follow SOPs and not overstep their boundaries with the residents.”
In the 49-second video, which went viral this evening, the speaker had asked a participant of his talk titled “Change Your Life” his age and proceeded to openly criticise him for supposedly “playing around in his youth”.
There were about 20 other residents from the shelter who were listening to the “motivational talk” at the time.
Addressing the 64-year-old participant, the speaker asked: “Do you regret not doing anything when you were younger? Do you regret playing around too much, doing things half-heartedly when you were younger? Do you regret it?”
Many took to social media to criticise the speaker for insulting the participants of his talk, calling him “insensitive and disrespectful”.
Dang Wangi police confirmed that the speaker, who was also seen not wearing a face-mask, has been fined RM1,500.
He was fined under Rule 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act (Act 342). |
