'Assassination hastily planned'

KUALA LUMPUR: As details into Monday’s assassination of Kim Jong-nam begin to emerge, one thing is becoming increasingly clear — that this was a sloppy, hastily planned hit, with too many loose ends.

Central to the investigation is a 28-year-old woman in possession of a Vietnamese travel document bearing the name Doan Thi Huong, and an Indonesian identified as Siti Aishah, 25, who was arrested on Thursday.

Thi Huong was arrested at klia2 at 8.20am on Wednesday. Thi Huong is believed to have been the “trigger person” tasked with eliminating the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

She was the one who allegedly swiped Jong-nam’s face with a towel investigators believe was laced with poison. She was also the one seen running away from the crime scene wearing a brown glove on her left hand, which was extended away from her face. Police also found a powdered substance, which they believe was the poison used in the attack, in her hotel room here.

While the actual hit on Jong-nam itself was quick, clean and effective, the overall plan is riddled with holes. WHY was the hit carried out in a “high-security area”? International airports are one of the most secure places on earth, with security checkpoints, a high police presence, roving patrols including K-9 units, and surveillance cameras.

This seemed like a plan that was hastily cobbled together and which had to be ready to be executed at a moment’s notice. Their target had been in-country from Feb 6 and had reportedly frequented many of his favourite hangouts here. There would have been plenty of opportunities to get him then, when he was out in the open.

The only problem would have been his security detail, which would have made it difficult for a would-be assassin to get close to him. One explanation that the hit was carried out at the airport was that Jong-nam’s security detail could have dialled back their level of protection there, as he prepared to board his flight back to his home in exile, in Macau.

Mission planners had been watching him for about a year and would have noticed that Jong-nam’s men would have pulled back a bit on their principal’s security arrangements at the airport. The airport was probably where he felt the safest.

THERE was no plan of escape, at least for the two women implicated in the operation. An assassin would have worked out the hit down to the minutiae, with alternate escape routes, forged documents, money, worked out possible contingencies and fallback plans. Advance teams would have scoured the place months beforehand to build an “overall threat picture”, taking everything into account, while support teams would work out ways to “sanitise” the hit team to remove any identifiable traces, features or items that could link them directly to the murder and put in place an escape plan.

It has emerged that when Thi Huong was arrested at klia2, she did not have her passport or a flight ticket on her. Why would she return to the scene of the crime, and more importantly, without a means to leave the country?

The Vietnamese also couldn’t have picked out a more conspicuous outfit to “blend in” with the crowd, opting for a white top with the print “LOL” emblazoned across it.

WHY risk a botched mission by using amateurs unschooled in the black arts of espionage? Police say they are zooming in on the identities of three operatives from North Korea. It is believed they are looking at the possibility of them being part of the North Korean diplomatic mission here, or agents who had been flown in under diplomatic cover to carry out the hit, in which case, there is a possibility that they would have left the country by now. If so, then the women were just pawns — expendable — to buy the real killers who engineered this hit, some time to escape.

WHY would Kim Jong-un risk potential embarrassment and international condemnation by staging the assassination on foreign soil? Unless that was the whole idea in the first place — to serve as a warning to others. As Pyongyang continues to exert its growing influence on the world stage with its nuclear weapons tests and ballistic missile programme, and as Jong-un consolidates his hold on power, nothing sends a clearer message of intimidation than a very public execution of an enemy of the state.

South Korean intelligence officials claimed that the North had been trying to liquidate Jong-nam for five years now. The Guardian said South Korea had jailed a North Korean spy in 2012, who admitted to trying to organise a hit-and-run accident targeting Jong-nam in China in 2010. In 2011, North Korean assassins reportedly tried to shoot Jong-nam in Macau, although details are still sketchy.

After another attempt to kill him in 2012, Jong-nam reportedly pleaded for his life, according to South Korean lawmakers, who had been briefed by the head of the country’s national intelligence service. With this success, the world has been put on notice.

PUTRAJAYA (Bernama) - Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin will seek the assistance of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to assess the situation in Pyongyang before Malaysia play North Korea in their 2019 Asian Cup Qualifier.

The match is scheduled to be held at the Kim Il Sung Stadium in Pyongyang on March 28.

Khairy said the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) will also seek the opinion of the AFC before deciding to go to North Korea.
"I will ask the AFC to monitor the situation in Pyongyang because security is our priority. It is a difficult situation now because the diplomatic relationship between North Korea and Malaysia is strained.

"If there is a change in venue, Malaysia will be ready to face their opponent," he told reporters at a briefing for the National Transformation (TN50) at the Youth and Sports Ministry, here today.

Malaysia have been drawn in Group B with North Korea, Hong Kong and Lebanon.

Malaysia on Monday recalled its ambassador to North Korea as well as summoned North Korea's ambassador over allegations the latter had made over Malaysia's probe into the murder North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's half-brother at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Feb 13.
The Foreign ministry said Kang Chol was summoned for "an explanation on the accusations he made against the Government of Malaysia in his press conference on Feb 17.

"In the press conference, the Ambassador...insinuated that...the Malaysian Government had 'something to conceal'. The Ambassador also alleged that Malaysia was 'colluding and playing into the gallery of external forces'," the statement from the ministry had said.

Don't visit North Korea, Nazri tells Malaysians

[size=0.813em]

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz has discouraged Malaysians from visiting North Korea, citing security reasons.

The Culture and Tourism Minister described North Korea as a "rogue" state which is highly unpredictable.

"I don't encourage Malaysians to visit North Korea.

"You cannot predict what they will do," he said after attending the launch of the 15th National Craft Day here Thursday.

He agreed with Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman that North Korea was under the delusion that Malaysia was in cahoots with a foreign power in the assassination of Kim Jong-nam on Feb 13.

North Korea had also demanded the return of Jong-nam's body while blaming Malaysia for his death.

"They are a rogue state. This is not North Korea, this is Malaysia. We have our laws," he said.

On calls to revoke free visas for North Koreans visiting Malaysia, Mohamed Nazri said the move was not necessary.

"There is no need to revoke the visa as North Koreans aren't allowed to travel out of their country in the first place," he said. He added that only North Korean officials travelled here.

Jong-nam, 45, the estranged half-brother of North Korea leader Kim Jong-un, was assassinated on Feb 13 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 by two women who poisoned him.

Four people have so far been arrested in relation to the case. They are Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, 28; Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25; North Korean Ri Jong-chol, 47, and Siti Aisyah’s boyfriend, Muhammad Farid Jalaluddin, a Malaysian.

The remand for Doan and Siti Aisyah was extended for a further seven days while the boyfriend would be released on police bail.

The four North Koreans who were involved in the murder have returned to Pyongyang.

Malaysian police have requested the North Korean government hand them over.

Malaysia may expel N. Korean envoy over airport killing comments, source says

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 — Malaysia is considering expelling North Korea’s envoy to the Southeast Asian nation or shutting its embassy in Pyongyang, as tensions escalate over the killing of the estranged half-brother of the North’s leader Kimg Jong-un, a senior government official said.

Kimg Jong-nam, 46, was killed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Feb. 13 with what police believe was a fast-acting poison, as he prepared to board a flight to Macau where he lived in exile with his family under the protection of Beijing.

North Korea’s ambassador said last week his country “cannot trust” Malaysia’s handling of the probe, and also accused the country of “colluding with outside forces” — a veiled reference to bitter rival South Korea.

A senior Malaysian government official who is familiar with the discussions said Ambassador Kang Chol’s comments have angered Malaysia and it was preparing a response, which could including declaring the ambassador “persona non grata”.

Such a move would be the strongest response Malaysia could take against a foreign diplomat, and would mean Kang Chol would have to leave the country.

The source said Malaysia was also considering other options. The country, which has until now been one of the few nations to maintain friendly ties with the isolated North, could close its embassy in Pyongyang, or end visa-free travel for North Koreans entering Malaysia.

If the criticism from North Korea did not stop, all diplomatic and trade ties could be cut, the source added.

The Malaysian foreign ministry did not answer phone calls seeking comment.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said earlier his week that the ambassador’s comments casting doubt over Malaysia’s investigation were “diplomatically rude”.

“The statement by the ambassador was totally uncalled for ... But Malaysia will stand firm,” Najib told reporters on Tuesday.

‘Crossed the line’

Malaysia is among the few foreign countries that North Koreans can travel to easily, thanks to a visa-free policy for visitors that is largely reciprocated by Pyongyang.

Since the 1980s, North Korea has used the Southeast Asian nation as a hub to promote its strategic and business interests, legitimate and otherwise, some analysts say.

But the tensions with Malaysia may further isolate North Korea.

Pyongyang’s nuclear arms and weapons programmes have alarmed the West, most recently its test of a ballistic missile earlier this month in its first direct challenge to the international community since Donald Trump became US president.

Malaysian police on Wednesday named a North Korean diplomat and a state airline official who they said were wanted for questioning over the killing of Kimg Jong-nam.

In all, police say they have identified eight North Korean men, one Vietnamese woman and one Indonesian women in connection with the killing. They said at least four of the suspects have fled the country and are most likely in Pyongyang.

North Korea has not responded to Malaysia’s allegations of the possible involvement of its diplomat in the case. Attempts by Reuters to contact the North Korean embassy by phone were unsuccessful, and reporters were not allowed to enter the embassy to seek comment.

South Korean and US officials believe the killing of the elder half-brother of Kimg Jong-un was an assassination carried out by agents of the North.

North Korean diplomats spent hours last week trying to talk Malaysian officials out of conducting an autopsy on Kimg Jong-nam’s body, sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters, but Malaysia rejected the requests.

The body is still at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur, as the autopsy has yet to be completed.

Today, Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said that the North’s ambassador had breached diplomatic norms with his comments.

“He crossed the line. To me, this is a diplomatic irregularity,” he was quoted as saying in The New Strait Times. — Reuters
