Rajasthan beats Bihar in Dalit atrocity

JAIPUR: There has been a significant rise in the crime against Schedule Caste (SC) in Rajasthan. The state having a population of 122.2 lakh SC people remained at number 3 position in the SC atrocities in the year 2014 and now with the latest figures with the NCRB Rajasthan has ranked at number two position. Surprisingly, the state is ahead of a state like Bihar in terms of the atrocities against SC. Opposition Congress over the scenario said that in Rajasthan where number of rape cases in the age bracket of 18-44 years were maximum and now it is at number two position it is foolish to expect investments.
In the year 2014, Uttar Pradesh had recorded the highest number of cases of atrocities against members of SC 2014, followed by Bihar and Rajasthan. "A total of 8,066 cases were registered under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Bihar (7,874 cases) and Rajasthan (6,734 cases)," said an officer.
However, the latest figures by the NCRB suggested that Rajasthan has surpassed Bihar as in the year 2015 Uttar Pradesh has recorded 8358 cases and is followed by Rajasthan with 6998 cases, Bihar 6438, Andra Pradesh 4415 and in Madhya Pradesh 4188 cases.
Even this year the Delta Meghwal case has shown how sensitive is police towards Dalit rights. Delta a 17-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped by a teacher at an institute in Bikaner's Nokha town and her body in a water tank on March 29 this year. The state government had though sent a letter to the union home ministry to request them for CBI probe into the matter the latter had turned down its request.
"I think the figures have cleared that law and order is deteriorating in Rajasthan. Crime against women, children and Dalits are on the rise. I don't think the state government is concerned and ready to take on this challenge. Even, government is unable to give a satisfactory answer to the people in the state on this scenario. We had witnessed rape cases in districts like Jhalwar and Baran. We as opposition will not let the government ignorant and idle and will seek reply from them and continuously work in order to compel them to improve the law and order in the state," said Sachin Pilot, president, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), Rajasthan while talking to TOI on Tuesday.
Pilot doubted that in this scenario any investor will come to Rajasthan. "Our chief minister Vasundhara Raje is keenly looking for investment. But how investor will come in a state registering maximum number of woman rape cases that are in the age bracket of 18-44 years and where we stand at number two in the country in Dalit atrocities," Pilot added.
