11-03-2008: Stocks rebound on bargain hunting

 KUALA LUMPUR: The local stock market staged a rebound Tuesday. Investors were tempted to pick up some battered stocks following the previous day's sharp sell off. However, we suspect prevailing uncertainties, both external and domestic, will continue to weigh on sentiment. And share prices may well continue to drift lower in the near term. The market started off cautiously in the early hour of trade. But bargain hunting gained traction as the day progressed. The KL Composite Index, which saw its biggest one-day fall since the 1998 crisis Monday, recouped some lost ground. The benchmark index gained 33 points to finish at 1,206.5 points. Market breadth was also positive for much of the day. Stocks that were heavily sold down in the previous day, including MRCB, Jaks Resources, Equine and UEM World, saw active interest Tuesday. Most ended the day higher. Key blue chip stocks also recovered some. Among the top gainers were Telekom Malaysia, Asiatic Development, DiGi, Sime Darby, Public Bank and Bumiputra-Commerce. Sentiment for plantation stocks improved after crude palm oil prices bounced back. The benchmark futures contract traded on the Bursa Derivatives had fallen sharply from its record high of RM4,486 per tonne in the past few days.
