The Black Cats will offer £4 million for the Republic of Ireland international, who has the incentive of a hefty pay rise...

Manchester City captain Richard Dunne is set to join Premier League rivals Sunderland at the end of the season, according to a report in the British tabloid The Sun.

Apparently, the Mackems will pay £4 million to land the 6ft 1in centre-back, who has scored six goals in 49 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

Since signing for the Citizens from Everton for £3 million in 2000, the 29-year-old has established himself as one of the toughest defenders in England.

However, his disciplinary record has been called into question - this season alone he has picked up six yellow cards and has been sent off on three occasions.

It is claimed that City manager Mark Hughes is preparing to make some major changes to his squad over the summer as he looks to establish the club as a major European force from next season onwards.

The good news for Dunne, who has scored seven goals in 343 matches for Manchester City, is that his salary will allegedly increase from £35,000-a-week to £50,000-a-week should he move to the Stadium of Light.
