SINGAPORE: Emyr Uzayr, one of the Tanjong Katong Primary School students that survived the earthquake in Sabah last week, returned to Singapore early Sunday morning (Jun 7) and is now in the high dependency ward at the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. He has been seeing a steady stream of visitors since his return, including the Education Minister Heng Swee Keat on Sunday evening.
"He is recovering, even with the fracture on his skull,” said his father Sadri Farick. “We are not going to proceed with the operation because there might be risks. We are just going to leave it (to heal) naturally because we have been advised by the neurosurgeons."
According to Emyr, one of his teachers, Mohamed Faizal, who recovering from his injuries, had used his body to shield three of the pupils from falling rocks and boulders on Mount Kinabalu during the earthquake. The other teachers on trip include Mr Terrence Loo, who was among seven from the school who died, and Mr Mohammad Ghazi, who is still missing.
Mr Sadri paid tribute to the teachers for their selfless acts. "They went two or three miles, helping them, shielding them, taking the hits, even with a broken skull and bones, they still brought them down 7 kilometres in blocked paths,” said Mr Sadri. “To me and most of the parents I've talked to, we owe it to the teachers.
“For the others who have perished, I know for the late Mr Terrence, he did help a bunch and he went up again. He's a real hero and as for Mr Ghazi, who is still missing - undeniably - I was told by some of the kids that he helped and he went up back again," he said.
“All the students said they are very nice teachers. They would stay behind after school hours and work about 13 hours a day for the children and loved their job.”

A video documenting Tanjong Katong Primary School pupil, Peony Wee who died in the Sabah earthquake, waving at the camera and saying "bye" to her parents was uploaded on the school blog on June 4, a day before the 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Sabah.
The video showed Peony and her schoolmate laughing and giggling throughout the footage as they talked about waking up in the cold on Mount Kinabalu.
In the video, they were asked about their "expectations of the day" and Peony's schoolmate said.
"Reach Pendant Hut safely, as a group (laughter) we have to motivate each other."
Peony interjected:
"Help each other."
"See nobody give up", her friend added.
The person holding the camera then asked the girls if they had anything to say to their parents.
After which, the girls burst out into laughter upon hearing a comment made by one of their school mates passing by.
Peony then said:
"Bye"
Beside her, a schoolmate said:
"We're safe here in Malaysia lah. Yeah that's all, thanks!"
The video then ended with the girls smiling.
That was one day before a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Sabah on Friday (June 5), killing 12-year-old Peony and some of her young friends.
According to a report in The Straits Times, as of Sunday (June 7), six pupils and one teacher from the school are confirmed to have died.
The Singaporean adventure guide who was with them also died. Another pupil and a teacher are still unaccounted for.
The victims were part of a group of 29 pupils and eight teachers on an overseas learning journey.
They were starting on Via Ferrata when the quake struck, sending rocks and boulders tumbling down from the mountain top. Via Ferrata, which means Iron Road in Italian, is a route where cables, metal rungs and bridges are set into the rocks to help climbers ascend the steep trail.
The school blog, titled 'It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves', documented the group's progress before that fateful day.
The pupils were in high spirits as they prepared to ascend the 4,095-m high Mount Kinabalu.
The expedition, called Omega Challenge, is an annual programme organised by the school for their student leaders and sport leaders. |

Facebook post by Heng Swee Keat Minister of Education Singapore :
This morning, two families laid their sons to rest. Tonight, six families keep their lights on and sit by their children as they lie in wake.
They are not alone. All day, I've seen friends, family, teachers, schoolmates, all come together to stand with the families of the earthquake victims. Our national badminton, dragon boat, netball, rugby and synchronised swimming teams visited the school to pay their respects. As soon as their match ended, our netballers went to present momento medals to the parents of two girls who loved netball. The medals now rest together with the girls. Our women’s canoeing team dedicated their Golds today to the quake victims. Some parents, even as they arranged the wake of their own child, went to visit other parents, to give them comfort. And all of us in Singapore have kept the families in our thoughts.
On our day of remembrance, we came together - as family members, relatives and friends, as a community. Even more, as a father said to me - as a nation. We remember the joys they have brought to us, the lives they have touched, and their spirit that lives on.
If you are not sure if your words or thoughts of kindness make any difference, I will leave you tonight with the words of a father - "I feel that the whole nation is grieving with us. Thank you for being with us in this time." |

Aku dah 7 kali daki Gunung Kinabalu (6 sampai summit, satu x lepas psl hujan lebat)...
Setiap pendakian kompom menjanjikan pengalaman yg berbeza.

Gempa Bumi Lebih Kuat

SINGAPORE: The Sabah earthquake "changes everything" and Malaysia will have to relook safety protocols for those climbing Mount Kinabalu, said Malaysia's Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin on Tuesday (Jun 9).
Mr Khairy visited Tanjong Katong Primary School Tuesday morning, and extended his condolences to the victims of the quake on behalf of the Malaysian people and the government. He was received by Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Education Indranee Rajah.
He said the incident has come as a "big shock" to the country. "This changes everything, because previously we've never had an earthquake with an epicentre so close to the mountain. I believe we will ensure that future climbers will be safe when the new protocols are in place.
Meteorologists and geologists will have to assess the impact of seismic movements in Sabah as part of efforts to relook safety aspects, the minister added.
"DONE OUR BEST": MINISTER ON RESCUE EFFORTS
Asked about the idea of restricting Mount Kinabalu climbers to 15 and above, Mr Khairy said: "Before we come to a conclusion about limiting the age of climbers, we have to understand what's taken place and seismic threats that confronts us. Once that's done and once we have the comprehensive review of the situation, then we are able to put in new security protocols which may or may not include an age limit to climbers in future."
He added that the authorities hope to conclude search-and-recovery operations by Tuesday, after unfavourable weather conditions in the last two days.
As for criticisms over rescue efforts, Mr Khairy said the authorities have "done our best from the start".
"We have ensured that our emergency services were deployed from the start. I think the helicopters were unable to land in the first place because of the weather conditions," he said.
"Of course the mountain guides played the leading role on the frontline because they were there and their familiarity with the terrain and they are certainly the heroes of the day. But I think the Malaysian emergency services responded well under that circumstances and I think that has been seen from the recovery of it today."
