Is Korean TV Losing its Competitive Edge?

Korean soap operas were the pinnacle of the Korean Wave that swept Asia. According to the Korean Broadcasting Institute (KBI), soap operas are still the most popular exported Korean TV program, accounting for 90 percent of TV programs exported in the first half of this year or US$53 million.

However, Korean TV is losing its competitive edge in Japanese and Chinese markets in terms of price and quality. Analysts say that producers' obsession with casting only top stars played against maintaining the quality of Korean soap operas. As a matter of fact, during the heyday of the Korean Wave, investment in lighting, props, stage art and supporting actors and actresses fell.

Just six years ago in 2002, top stars were paid only W5 million (US$1=W1,301) per episode. According to a recent record, Song Seung-hun was paid W70 million per episode, Lee Jung-jae W50 million, and Choi Ji-woo W48 million -- showing that their values rose more than 10 times from about five years ago. The Corea Drama Production Association on Dec.11 pledged to suspend actor Park Shin-yang indefinitely for demanding W170.5 million per episode for four extra episodes made for "War of Money."

Bae Yong-joon in "Winter Sonata" (left) and Lee Young-ae in "Jewel in the Palace"

Kim Jin-woong, a professor at Sunmoon University said, "When there were only two soap operas -- 'Winter Sonata' and 'Jewel in the Palace' -- that were hits overseas, people mistakenly thought any drama would bring international success, and speculatively raised the price of top actors and actresses. This significantly raised the cost of production, and most producers repeatedly found themselves in the red."

This led to a decline in the quality of soap operas in general. Foreign buyers have long complained that Korean soap operas lack storytelling power.

There is some self-reflection within the entertainment business that the Korean Wave failed to introduce an advanced and competitive production system.

Lee Moon-haeng, a communications professor at the University of Suwon, said, "While the Korean Wave is not as strongly felt in Japan and China, it still has a very loyal fan base in Vietnam among the young generation. If we come up with a localized Korean Wave strategy, we still have limitless opportunities."

Media Workers' Strike Enters 4th Day

Unionized media workers staging a strike against the ruling Grand National Party's (GNP) move to revise media laws will hold news conferences across the country on Monday, the fourth day of the walkout.

Unionists also plan to distribute pamphlets on streets raising awareness of the bill sought by the GNP.

The nation抯 major broadcasting companies are facing glitches in their programming due to the strike, with MBC failing to air multiple programs over the weekend. The broadcaster is also expected to face difficulties in running its year-end award ceremony program.

Some of the hosts of TV programs on another major network, SBS, wore black while hosting to protest the ruling camp抯 bill.

CBS and EBS, firms that had limited their participation in the strikes, plan to step up their protests and will refuse to produce some of their regularly scheduled programming.

Rain Launches Six to Five Fashion Line

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

Rain recently held a fashion show and showcase for the launching
of his new clothing line Six to Five. / Yonhap

Rain has had a busy year but is about to wear a new hat: designer of his own clothing line.

The 26-year-old singer held a showcase in Ilsan last week to announce the launching of "Six to Five" with the help of fellow celebrities and fans.

Dressed in a neat black and white tuxedo, Rain explained the line's overall concept and objectives to reporters, not as a singer, but as the head designer and main model. "'Six to Five' means that we are aiming to reach the sixth sense from our original five senses. I also wanted to use numbers to make it easier to find and comfortable to approach,'' he said.

Six to Five will start business in Korea and then expand elsewhere in Asia and then Europe and the United States. "I think it's a bit unreasonable to call myself a designer. I never learned the trade professionally, but I did try to analyze the clothes I enjoy wearing and feel comfortable in. I volunteered as a designer, thinking the public may understand my views," he said.

The fashion show displayed many different items, including leather boots, denim shorts and cute tops and jackets. As Rain said, the overall style was casual and practical, with a hint of edginess shown through the use of bold colors and accessories like hats, belts and shoes.

Many fellow celebrities appeared at the event, while Rain's fans also waited to see the launching of their favorite star's new project.

Golf star Michelle Wie led the long line of stars, with actors Kim Sun-ah, Jung Jun-ho and singers Seo In-young and Yoon Kye-sang on hand as well. Singer and friend Lee Hyo-ri even appeared dressed in pieces from the Six to Five women's line.

Meanwhile, a local travel agency had been offering package tours including attendance at the event. More than 100 Japanese fans took the trip for 20,000 yen (approximately 300,000 won) only to find there was no room at Rain's launch as tickets had been distributed randomly free of charge and the agency had apparently acted dishonestly. Rain's agency, Jtune Entertainment, later announced that it had reported the case to police and had the travel agency reimburse the Japanese fans.

Six to Five was created by Jtune Creative, an affiliate of Rain's agency, Jtune Entertainment. The launching show will be aired on cable channel Mnet at 11 p.m. Jan. 6. Six to Five is expected to be available in selected department stores in February.

Rain will continue his busy plans next year as well, starting with a fan meeting titled "New Year Rain's Fan Meeting" in Japan early next month. Having released his album ``Rainism'' in six Asian countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, he will release the album in Japan on Jan. 7.

After wrapping up promotion schedules for "Rainism" in Japan, the singer will work on a new album set to be released in the U.S. He will then join the cast of the Hollywood movie "Ninja Assassin" for promotion in March, which is when the film is slated for release.

People Lighting Up World in 2008

Bae Ji-sook
Staff Reporter

Actress Moon Geun-young, actor Kim Myung-min and ice skater Kim Yu-na were selected among 100 people that "lit up the world" in 2008 in a survey conducted by the Korea Green Foundation.

Twenty-one-year-old Moon, who has been working on the silver screen for the past 10 years, took the leading role for the SBS hit drama "The Painter of Wind" and showed off her talent as a grown-up actress.

However, what got her on the list was the fact that she had been the No.1 private donator for the charity group Community Chest of Korea for the past 10 years. The group stated that Moon declined to have her name revealed, but she has been involved in numerous charity projects and undertaking volunteer work on the advice of her mother.

Kim grabbed the attention of the critics with his astounding performance in MBC smash hit drama "Beethoven Virus" this fall. Taking the role of fastidious musical conductor Kang Mae, he brought viewers joy and happiness, the Foundation said.

Ice skating starlet Kim Yu-na gave a breath of fresh air to those suffering under the strain of the global economic meltdown. As she waltzed across the ice, the whole nation cheered and watched her moves. When she won, people from all walks of life felt as if they also had won, and she brought a sense of hope to the rat race that dominates the lives of the populace.

Kim hosted some charity shows, hinting that her next move could see her become a philanthropist.

Among others on the list were musical director and once pro-democratic activist Kim Min-ki; professors who are opposed to the construction of a cross-country canal designed by President Lee Myung-bak; movie director Lim Soon-rye; and Olympic baseball team coach Kim Kyung-moon.

The award ceremony took place at the Korea Press Center in downtown Seoul Monday.

Lee Jae-won

90s K-pop idol Lee Jae-won of H.O.T and JTL was arrested on rape charges but was later released when the victim withdrew her suit in an out-of-court settlement.

Following his release, Lee publicly expressed regret and stated he would suspend all music activities indefinitely.

The Seoul Eastern District Court issued an arrest warrant for Lee on December 19, who was accused of having sexual intercourse without consent with an aspiring celebrity at a Seoul motel on December 10. Lee alleged that the action was based on mutual understanding, but the victim claimed she was intoxicated and unconscious at the tine and had been unable to refuse. Korean law distinguishes forced sex acts from sex without consent.

Lee was arrested but three hours later the woman changed her mind and made an out-of-court settlement. The judge also agreed to release Lee at around 11 p.m.

Lee went on to make an official statement about what had happened and about his music career which would be affected by the recent incident. The singer posted an official message of apology on his Website saying he was deeply sorry for letting his fans down.

Lee did not make the scheduled appearance he was supposed to make as a host of a cable TV show on December 22. He also may not be able to release his new album next year.

In the mid-90s, Lee debuted as the youngest member of H.O.T., which is said to have opened a new era of boy bands in Korea. After the sensationally popular group split in 2001, he remained in the music industry and showbiz by forming another band, JTL, and subsequently going solo, seeking success in Japan and China.

What's on Cultural Horizon in 2009?

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

The year 2009 is now finally around the corner, and it is about time to prepare for the New Year. The past year was an interesting one, and readers can now preview what is planned in 2009.

Dramas

Historical Dramas on the Rise: The three major networks are planning to air three distinctive historical dramas next year, MBC with "Queen Seondeok," KBS with "Empress Cheonchoo" and SBS with "Jamyeonggo" (working titles).

The three dramas will touch on the lives of powerful women during the period in which the programs are set: the Goryeo Kingdom (918-1392), the Silla Kingdom (668-935) and the Goguryeo Kingdom (37 B.C.-A.D.668), respectively.

Starring Ko Hyun-joung and Lee Yo-won, "Queen Seondeok" will carry the story of the first queen to rule during Goryeo, while "Empress Cheonchoo'' will bring back the courageous grand daughter of King Taejo (47-165), played by Chae Si-ra, and her lifelong struggle to protect the country her ancestors built. "Jamyeonggo" is based on the folk tale of princess Nak-rang and Goguryoe's prince Ho-dong, and the relationship between the two royal subjects and Nak-rang's secret sister played by Jung Ryeo-won.

"Empress Cheonchoo" will start airing Jan. 3 and "Jamyeonggo" in February, while "Queen Seondeok" has not confirmed a date for airing.

Hallyu Stars Return to Small Screen: Numerous hallyu stars will return to the small screen next year. Actor So Ji-sub will greet fans through new SBS drama "Cain and Abel" next February. The drama is about the intense relationship between two brothers, one a genius doctor and another outshone by his sibling. "Cain and Abel" will start airing Feb. 19. Kwon Sang-woo will star in "Cinderella Man," a program about a young man's life-changing story, while Lee Byung-hun and Kim Tae-hee will appear in "Iris," which is a spin-off of the hit movie "Swiri." Ji Sung and Sung Yu-ri will also return to television through a spin-off of popular drama "All In, "Swallow the Sun" (working title.) The story of an ambitious young man struggling for success will continue with the "Sun," with Ji Sung as the dreamer who strives to make Jeju Island one of the most popular cities in the world. "Cinderella Man" will be aired in April and the "Sun" in June.

Other hallyu stars include Hyun Bin with the drama "Friend: The Untold Story" and Lee Jun-ki with "Invisible War" (working titles).

Movies

The past year, 2008, was not the best for local movies, but there is hope 2009 will be different. With big directors planning to offer their works, fans will have the chance to re-live the heyday of Korean cinema.

Filmmaker Park Chan-wook will return with his new film "Thirst." The movie is about a priest who becomes a vampire by accident and falls in love with his friend's wife. Aiming to bring a universal film, Park decided not to make any changes in the appearances of characters, like fangs and pale white skin, but focus more on the emotional changes in characters. Starring Song Kang-ho and Shin Ha-kyun, it will be in theaters this April.

Following Park is Bong Jun-ho's thriller "Mother." While many other thriller movies have young male stars, Bong's film will have veteran actress Kim Hae-ja as the main character. Determined to save her son from being framed on a false charge of murder, Kim will play the emotionally strained mother and discover dark secrets along the way. It is slated for release in May.

Choi Dong-hoon, the director who made "Tazza: The High Rollers" and "The Big Swindle," has returned to the Joseon Kingdom era (1392-1910) to bring the film "Jeonwoochi" (working title). Based on the traditional novel `` Jeonwoochi Chronicles,'' the film presents the story of a Joseon period ascetic, who has been trapped inside a painting for 500 years and finds himself released into the modern world. Dubbed as a fantasy comic action film, the movie will star Gang Dong-won as the ascetic and Lim Soo-jung as the heroine. The film will be released in August.

Other local movies include "The Scheme," a thriller about stock analysts starring Park Yong-ha and also "Public Official" (working titles), the Korean version of Hollywood's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," starring Kim Ha-neul and Kang Ji-hwan.

In 2009, the release of highly-anticipated Hollywood films starring some of Korea's favorite celebrities will also come. They include Lee Byung-hun's "G.I.Joe: Rise of the Cobra" in August and Jeon Ji-hyun's "Blood: The Last Vampire" and Rain's "Ninja Assassin" in March.

Classical Music

Orchestras to Captivate Fans: Numerous orchestras around the world will grace local fans next year. The 31-year-old Strauss Festival Orchestra Vienna will visit Korea and perform at the Seoul Arts Center (SAC) Jan. 20, while the Berlin Radio Symphony led by principal conductor Marek Janowski will bring the tunes of famous German composers like Beethoven and Schubert to the SAC Jan. 31.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra will visit Korea in April, with the National Symphony Orchestra led by music director and conductor Ivan Fischer following in June.

The New York Philharmonic Orchestra will greet fans with its new music director Alan Gilbert in October, while the Haydn Philharmonic will arrive in November to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Austrian composer's death.

Soloists Step on Stage: Tenors Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, who were two of the so-called ``three tenors'' alongside the late Luciano Pavarotti, will visit to offer their charismatic stage presence to local fans in January and May, respectively.

Chinese pianist Yundi Li will hold a piano recital after a six-year hiatus. The youngest winner of the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition will visit Korea in February.

Local stars will also take to the stage, including cellist Chung Myung-hwa, who will hold her 40th anniversary concert in April with pianist Kim Dae-jin, while aspiring musicians ― pianist Kim Sun-wook; violinist Kim Soo-yeon; Lee Yu-ra; violist Choi Eun-shik; cellist Song Young-hoon and bassist Sung Min-jae ― will perform with maestro Chung Myung-whun.

K-Pop

The pop scene was fierce in 2008, and it looks like there will be more competition among idol groups with several more jumping into the local scene, while some popular groups branch out to pursue their individual careers.

YG Entertainment recently announced that it will launch a new girl group in February.

According to the head of the agency, Yang Hyun-suk, former member of the hit group Seo Taiji and Boys, the dance group will make its debut early next year. Yang also added they will be a "girl version of Big Bang," referring to the popular boy band. The only hint Yang offered was that it will be a tougher and more charismatic group compared to the other girl groups on the local pop scene.

The comeback of several popular singers will also surprise fans, with pop group Girls' Generation and Se7en returning in 2009.

Girls' Generation announced that the group is releasing its new mini album "Gee" Jan. 7. The nine members have been working on personal projects such as acting, singing solo and even working as a radio DJ. Along with Girl's Generation, Se7en will also return to Korea after a period working in the U.S.

Members of top idol groups are also set to branch out individually. TVXQ, SS501 and even Big Bang will see their members pursue new projects, like acting and releasing solo albums, including Kim Hyun-joong from SS501 and Victory from Big Bang.

Dance

The past year saw many dance troupes visiting Korea to offer their distinctive moves, including the American Ballet Theater and Stuttgart Ballet, and 2009 will be no different.

Movie star Juliette Binoche will visit Seoul as a dancer to perform "in-i" with fellow dancer and choreographer Akram Khan at LG Arts Center in March. Meanwhile, Russia's Boris Eifman Ballet will bring one of the best works "Tchaikovsky: The Mystery of Life and Death" to dance fans in September.

Choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot, winner of the Prix Benois de la Danse Choreographer of the Year in 2007 and famous for his creativity in some of the most famous tales in the world, will offer his version of the classic "Cinderella" with dancers from the Korea National Ballet at Seoul Arts Center this coming March.

Korean celebs battle internet gossiping

Written by Patrick Frater

Korea's celebrities are coping with Internet attention worthy of TMZ and PerezHilton. A growing online gossipy base of fans and detractors is casting new kinds of scrutiny on celebs. Some even blame all of the gossip-mongering for a recent string of celebrity suicides.

The latest life laid bare concerns prominent TV actress Ok So-ri, who has been fighting an adultery case. After the prosecution sought incarceration for 18 months, she was this week given an 8 month suspended jail sentence by a judge who took pity after her public mauling.

Ok had made the problem worse for herself by asking the constitutional court to rule on legislation which makes adultery a criminal offense. She argued that the law, once designed to protect women in a male dominated society, is now used as a means of revenge by cheated spouses.

President Lee Myung-bak has denounced "infodemics" of rumor and innuendo and, at the time of the Choi Jin-sil suicide, senior politician Hong Joon Pyo described the country's Internet space as "the wall of a public toilet."

SK, LG to Launch Commercial IPTV

The era of full-fledged IPTV service has arrived in Korea, as two operators will launch commercial services starting January first.

SK Broadband signed agreements with terrestrial broadcasters KBS and MBC this month to re-air their programs in real time starting Thursday. It also reached a similar agreement with SBS.

It will officially launch commercial services of IPTV, or Internet Protocol TV, by offering 23 channels.

LG Dacom抯 IPTV service, myLGtv, will also go commercial the same day.

Industry leader KT will also expand its service, as it secured in November the right to re-air programs produced by SBS.

The government has plans to support new IPTV programs that aim to narrow the educational gap between the haves and have-nots by offering quality educational content at the click of a mouse.

Lee Hyo-ri Too Ill for Award Ceremonies

Hospitalized for acute pneumonia and excessive fatigue, K-pop diva Lee Hyo-ri will be absent from all the year-end award ceremonies. Her representative MNet Media reported that Lee has been diagnosed with pneumonia, malnutrition, and over exhaustion, and has been ordered by her doctors to take at least 10 days of complete bed rest.

Lee抯 condition has forced her to cancel all her appearances, including the year-end music award ceremonies. During her preparation for her first solo concert, she has lost 7 kilograms due to a bad cold and fatigue. She had also appeared on her regular spots in various shows despite her bad health.

Deeply disappointed at missing out on the ceremonies, Lee said she抣l think only about getting well and returning to the stage healthy and well-rested.
