Takuya Kimura becomes "Mr. Brain"
SMAP member Takuya Kimura has picked up his next starring role in a television drama. He will play the lead in TBS's comedy/mystery series "MR.BRAIN," scheduled to start in mid-spring.
Kimura plays the part of Ryusuke Tsukumo, a neuroscience researcher affiliated with a National Police Agency laboratory. Although his skills help solve difficult cases, he has one flaw: he is generally "clueless to the situation" (better known by the slang term "KY," or "kuuki o yomenai"), leading to various comical interactions. In general, each episode will be a different case.
Kimura's assistant will be played by Haruka Ayase, while Hiro Mizushima will take on the role of a young cop. Other characters include the head of the lab (Mao Daichi), another detective (Teruyuki Kagawa), and a couple of researchers (Yuji Tanaka of Bakusho Mondai and Tortoise Matsumoto of Ulfuls).
TBS plans to broadcast the drama in its Saturday 7:56pm time slot, which will be occupied by "God Hand Teru" starting April 11. "MR.BRAIN" will begin on May 23.

Oricon: most beautiful people
American magazine People will soon be releasing its "100 Most Beautiful People" list, so Oricon has put together a small survey about "beautiful" Japanese celebrities. 1,000 men and women participated in the survey, which asked about both male and female celebrities.
The #1 answer for male celebrities was young actor Hiro Mizushima (25), though the survey was conducted just before he announced his marriage to singer Ayaka (21). Among female celebrities, the recently divorced Norika Fujiwara (37) was the #1 choice.

Oricon: whose face would you want?
Earlier this year, Oricon asked 600 men ranging from their teens to their forties, "Which male celebrity's face would you want to have?" Naturally, men considered popularity with women as the main factor, leading to Masaharu Fukuyama topping the list. Takuya Kimura ranked #2, followed by Hiro Mizushima.

Takuya Kimura in “Mr. Brain” to debut on TBS on May 23rd

One of the most anticipated Japanese dramas is “Mr. Brain” starring popular actor and SMAP member Takuya Kimura. In a recent column for “Televiews” for the Daily Yomiuri, Wm. Penn writes about this upcoming drama. Here is an excerpt from Wm. Penn’s column.
Hold on, TBS. Help is on the way. The Mr. Brain rescue team arrives May 23 to extricate the network from one of its worst drama quarters in memory.
Overall, Japanese continuing series are better than usual this quarter. I’m still regularly watching three that are all holding firm in the ratings–Aishiteru (Wednesdays, 10 p.m., NTV), Shiroi Haru (Tuesdays, 10 p.m., Fuji) and Rinjo (Wednesdays, 9 p.m., TV Asahi)–while the favorite with most viewers is Boss (Thursdays, 9 p.m., Fuji), the only private network series with Video Research Ltd. ratings over 15 percent. Even traditional drama underdog TV Asahi outshone the other networks for the week of April 20-26 by boasting four of the top 10 dramas.
None of this is good news for TBS, which launched five major drama series in April–Smile, Hancho, Fufudo 2, Godhand Teru and Boku no Imoto–all currently in ratings free fall. Only Smile (Fridays, 10 p.m.) is keeping its head above the 10 percent mark while Boku no Imoto is venturing dangerously close to 5 percent. The rest are struggling in single-digit territory, as is the network’s two-hour weeknight news experiment Soryoku Hodo: The News, which is quite watchable but not making a dent in NHK’s ratings dominance.
The only good news for TBS is that Mr. Brain, a suspense drama with a comical touch starring ratings magnet Takuya Kimura, should put them back in the race. It debuts with a 100-minute special (May 23, 7:56-9:38 p.m.) in the slot currently held by the departing Godhand Teru.
Ryusuke Tsukumo (Kimura) was once a club host but after suffering a brain injury, he recovered and pursued a career in psychology. He’s now an unconventional police psychologist who thinks far outside the box when it comes to crime and his own fashion sense. Haruka Ayase is his assistant at the National Research Institute of Police Science, where he works in a crime lab with experts on DNA, profiling, surveillance cameras, computers, poisons and other highly technical specialties. His costars also include a mouse in a maze and Teruyuki Kagawa and Hiro Mizushima as the detectives who continually seek his help.
To insure the series reflects reality and guarantees a much-needed TBS ratings success, the drama’s Web site lists a whole team of real-life technical advisors and a growing list of guest stars.

More guests announced for "Mr. Brain"

This Saturday, the drama series "MR.BRAIN," starring SMAP's Takuya Kimura, will premiere on TBS. The cast already includes several other popular stars, such as Haruka Ayase and Hiro Mizushima, but during a recent press event it was announced that each episode will also feature big-name guests.
Last week, it was revealed that KAT-TUN's Kazuya Kamenashi is scheduled to appear in the show's third episode. Now, it is known that the first episode will have appearances by Ebizo Ichikawa, Ryoko Hirosue, and others, while the second episode will bring on musician Gackt.
TBS is hoping to draw very high ratings for the series, which airs in the network's Saturday night time slot.

"Mr. Brain" premiere reaches 25%
TBS's aired the first episode of its "MR.BRAIN" drama series on Saturday. As expected for a drama starring Takuya Kimura, viewership ratings were high, achieving 24.8% in the Kanto region and 25.2% in Kansai.
Aside from Kimura, the show also features popular stars like Haruka Ayase and Hiro Mizushima. TBS has also been promoting the guest stars in each episode, such as Ebizo Ichikawa and Ryoko Hirosue in this premiere episode. Gackt and Kazuya Kamenashi are among the guests for future episodes.
This marks the best opening of any drama series this season by far, and it is also that time slot's (Saturday 8:00pm) highest ratings since TBS began airing dramas in the slot last spring.

I Come With the Rain Premieres
Local heartthrob Kimura Takuya (36) joined Hollywood counterpart Josh Hartnett (30) and Korean star Lee Byung Hun (38) last night for the world premiere of "I Come With the Rain" in Tokyo. The actors were in Roppongi at the Tokyo Midtown complex for the event, also enjoyed by an invited audience of about 1,000.
The movie is directed by Vietnamese-born French director Tran Anh Hung, who is currently working on the eagerly awaited movie version of Murakami Haruki's cult novel "Noruwei no Mori" (Norwegian Wood). It is scheduled to open in theaters on June 6.
SMAP's Kimura talked about the tensions of filming in one of the more unsavory areas of the Philippines under the watchful eye of the local military. The movie was also filmed on location in Los Angeles and Hong Kong.
