“Maru Maru Mori Mori!” reaches quarter million in sales
“Maru Maru Mori Mori!,” the theme song to the popular television drama “Marumo no Okite,” has just reached a new milestone, as the CD single’s total sales surged past 250,000 copies this week. This is the first time in almost 35 years that a song by a Japanese artist under 10 years old has reached even 200,000 copies.
The song is sung by “Marumo no Okite” co-stars Ashida Mana (7) and Suzuki Fuku (7), under the unit name of Kaoru to Yuki, Tama ni Mook. The last Japanese artist under 10 years old to achieve 200,000 in sales was Kawahashi Hiroshi, who was 8 years old when “Yamaguchi-sanchi no Tsutomu-kun” reached 232,000 copies in June 1976. Including foreign artists, the last one was Emmanuel Lewis’s “City Connection” in July 1981 (338,000 copies).
Released on March 25, “Maru Maru Mori Mori!” entered the weekly charts at #3 and has been in the Top 10 every week since then. This past week, it experienced a big boost, jumping from #9 the previous week (11,072 copies sold) to #2 (66,549 copies sold).
Child actress Ashida Mana to co-host variety show “Meringue no Kimochi”
7-year-old actress Ashida Mana will soon become the youngest regular host ever of a talk/variety show. She and Ito Asako (41) have been chosen as the new hosts of NTV’s “Meringue no Kimochi” (Saturdays 12:00-13:30), along with long-time host Hisamoto Masami (53).
Hisamoto has been on the show since its start in 1996, though her two co-hosts have changed several times over the years. Her current co-hosts are Usuda Asami and Matsuura Aya.
The show’s producer said that he wanted to try a new challenge as the show has just finished its 15th year, so he added Ashida to keep things fresh. She and Ito will begin appearing on the show on October 1st.
Ashida has been on a roll ever since her breakthrough performance in the 2010 drama series “Mother.” She has also acted in movies such as “Kokuhaku” and “Usagi Drop,” as well as the recent hit drama series “Marumo no Okite.” She and her “Marumo no Okite” co-star Suzuki Fuku (7) currently have a hit song on their hands, “Maru Maru Mori Mori!”
Ashida is not the first 7-year-old to be a regular host on a television show, however. Mashita Konomi (33) was also 7 years old when she was the main emcee of Fuji TV’s sports news show “Sports Tokkyuu” in 1985-1986, paired with announcer Ogura Tomoaki (64).
Mukai Osamu, Takei Emi, Nakayama Yuma, and Ashida Mana to star in annual Fuji TV summer drama
It’s been revealed that Mukai Osamu, Takei Emi, NYC’s Nakayama Yuma, and Ashida Mana will be starring in this year’s Fuji TV summer drama, “Honto ni Atta Kowai Hanashi“.
“Honto ni Atta Kowai Hanashi” is a horror mystery series that started in 1998, based on haunted stories from all over Japan. The narrator for this series is SMAP’s Inagaki Goro, and he will introduce four stories as the manager of ‘Honkowa Club’.
This will be the first time all four stars will take on acting in the horror genre. Ashida said with spirit, “It’s a scary story, but I am doing my best with the acting. Please look forward to it.” Takei confessed, “When I’m the one watching, I close my eyes during scary scenes,” while Mukai showed his willingness by saying, “The director’s obsession for ghosts is wonderful. I want to meet his expectations.”
Producer Goto Hiroyuki commented, “Please look forward to the expressions of fear on the cast that represents 2011.”
“Honto ni Atta Kowai Hanashi” will air on Fuji TV starting September 3rd.
