The deal shatters the £30.6m record Chelsea's owner, Roman Abramovich, paid Milan for Andrei Shevchenko two summers ago. It also makes clear City's owners, who beat several other Gulf states to pick up Thaksin's shareholding, will redefine spending levels in British football for the second time in five years and leave City with greater purchasing power than any side in the land. The wealthiest of the Al Nayhans – Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan – has estimated personal wealth of £13.3bn, £2.3bn more than Abramovich, though the spending power of the Arab interests may dwarf the Russian's by even more.hmy3:
City's audacious £34m bid to Spurs for Dimitar Berbatov yesterday further illustrated the point, along with bids for Valencia's David Villa and Stuttgart's Mario Gomez, which were sanctioned by the owner,s representative Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim – a multimillionare property tycoon in his own right. Al Fahim, who simply told the City manager, Mark Hughes, to go out and find them a superstar inside 24 hours yesterday morning, was frustrated by the limited time he was left with to buy, having been forced to rush out with his cheque book even before due diligence on the City deal had been completed. He finds himself with a potent strike force of Robinho and his £18m compatriot Jo. But he is ready to make huge moves in the next transfer window, including going back for Berbatov in January if he feels he needs to. Al Fahim also has Thierry Henry and the Brazilian Ronaldo , released by Milan at the end of last season, in his sights. "I need a good player who can provide energy. Thierry Henry and Ronaldo can also add the confidence and the experience and provide the mix with the younger players," Al Fahim said. |

Premier League - Ronaldo next for ambitious City
Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, the owner-elect of Manchester City, will make a record breaking bid for Cristiano Ronaldo in January.
Al-Fahim and the Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) are plotting to follow up the sensational capture of Robinho on transfer deadline day with the signing of Manchester United's prize asset once the transfer window re-opens next year.
"Ronaldo has said he wants to play for the biggest club in the world, so we will see in January if he is serious," Al-Fahim told Arabian Business magazine.
"Real Madrid were estimating his value at $160 million but for a player like that, to actually get him, will cost a lot more, I would think $240 million (£134.3m).
"But why not? We are going to be the biggest club in the world, bigger than both Real Madrid and Manchester United." |

Robinho: The Sky's The Limit
Tue 02 Sep, 09:09 PM
Robinho believes the sky is the limit for Manchester City.
On the day the billionaire businessman at the centre of the City takeover set his sights on signing Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, Robinho vowed to prove a big hit at Eastlands.
Last night he became the most expensive signing by a British club when City spent £32.4million to bring in the 24-year-old from Real Madrid, and today Robinho met manager Mark Hughes.
Robinho told www.mcfc.co.uk: "I knew that Manchester City is a very big club, there's a great team there already and this is an exciting project.
"I liked the project, and when City made the offer to Real Madrid, I decided to come here. I liked the plans that Manchester City have and I want to succeed with them."
The Abu Dhabi United Group have announced grand plans for City to become the world's biggest club, which would be no mean feat, not least because neighbours Manchester United, who have a claim on that title already, are English and European champions.
Robinho has bought into their ambitious plan though and is enjoying the response to his signing by the City fans, who have been buying up tickets and club merchandise throughout the day.
"That makes me very, very happy, and I want to repay this excitement by performing on the pitch, and scoring a lot of goals for the fans," he said.
Robinho confirmed the presence of his international team-mates Jo and Elano at City was a factor in his decision to sign, even though Chelsea appeared a more likely destination at the start of transfer deadline day.
Hughes, who had a playing spell in Spain with Barcelona, has spoken to his new signing and Robinho is keen to work with the former Blackburn and Wales manager.
"I met with the manager today and it went very well," said Robinho.
"I know that he was a great player and I think that will be a big help to me. I want to help the manager and the team to win the Premier League, that's my ambition here."
Former City chairman Francis Lee, meanwhile, is confident the incoming owners will show faith in Hughes and give him every chance to show he is the right man to take the club forward, rather than bringing in a superstar manager.
"I don't think he's under any great pressure," Lee told BBC Radio Five Live.
"He's just arrived here as manager, he's getting to know the players, he's a very competent manager and he's proved that at international level too.
"I think they'll just let him get on with it and see where we go.
"I think with his skill and enthusiasm for the club he'll take it forward."
Lee, a club legend from his playing days, was City chairman from 1994 to 1998, while the club were at their former home Maine Road.
The sudden change in their fortunes, following the Arab approach, has taken him aback.
"It's quite amazing really," said Lee. "All of a sudden Manchester City is the richest club in the world."
He is looking forward to the success which the new owners are targeting, but said: "I think people have got to be patient and not expect it to happen overnight.
"If we got into (the Champions League) this season it would be an exceptional performance but I would think next year it would be pretty much a sure thing."
Lee has also worked in horse-racing and has seen the Arab influence in that sport. He expects further investment from Arab businessmen in the Barclays Premier League.
He said: "I think the Arabs will invest in one of the Liverpool clubs and probably one in London and that will be about it." |

Chelsea ‘fans’ defect to Man City
The Premiership woke up this morning to a lot of excitement.
Everton fans were celebrating breaking their transfer record, West Ham fans were incredulous that they had sold half their defence without replacing them, Liverpool fans were “overjoyed” at signing two foreign 18 year olds to add to their increasing collection of foreign 18 year olds, Newcastle were celebrating signing a new striker by having some good old northern speculation over the manager’s future, and Arsenal were incredulous that Arsene Wenger’s new sleeping pills had made him sleep through the entire transfer window.
The most emotion was at Chelsea though, with reports that overnight their fanbase had halved. While the fans from more than about 5 years ago are generally pretty solid, there have been more and more ‘loyal’ supporters whistling nonchalantly and sidling up to Manchester.
After the cash splashed about by Manchester City’s new owners in alarming fashion (bids of over £30 million were made for European golden boys David Villa, Robinho, Dimitar Berbatov and Nigel Quashie), it seems some Chelsea fans have turned their back on Abramovich’s paltry £550 million plus investment over the past years in favour of the Abu Dhabi Investment Group.
“Roman put in about £600 million over 5 years,” said one former fan. “That’s £120 million a year. These new guys have spent over £30 million in one day, just on players, so if you extrapolate… I expect them to catch up in about a month or so. They have my support.”
It seems many other fans have been drawn, moth-like, to the City of Manchester Stadium. Supporters have been noticed outside wearing blue Wright-Phillips shirts which look suspiciously like Chelsea kits with a new badge drawn over the top.
Scarves and hats have had “Chelsea” crossed out and “City” written on instead, while groups of ‘City’ fans have been seen huddling together swearing never to mention their May trip to Moscow again.
Fans who had just bought Chelsea shirts with “Robinho” on the back under the impression he would be arriving at Stamford Bridge were looking very smug and telling people they had bought them “for a joke” and that they had really supported City for years.
Problems did not arise however until parts of SW3 were removed from London and dumped just outside Cheetham Hill by a lorry. There are also reports that Chelsea Pensioners have negotiated a move up north too, which would be likely to lead to Manchester commandeering the Chelsea Flower Show and a small portion of the Thames as well.
“It’s just not fair,” said one Manchester resident. “There are so many southerners round here now my kids are starting to lose their accent. On reflection though, that may not be such a bad thing…”
When questioned about the attitude of the cash-loving supporters, Phil Scolari just shrugged.
“Fans are like women,” he said. “Splash some money around and they’ll come running. But when your next door neighbour moves in and parks his Ferrari on the drive, you can be sure her thoughts will wander.” |
