Madrid back in the hunt for Van Nistelrooy

Oi tok alex, aku nak blah gak, kau tak reti ke

Real Madrid yesterday confirmed their continuing interest in Ruud van Nistelrooy when they returned with an improved bid for the Manchester United forward.

However, the uncertainty surrounding Dutchman's future is set to continue with the Spanish club's offer of around £10.3 million still falling well short of United's £15 million asking price.

Madrid's move comes in the wake of Bayern Munich's attempt to force United's hand by tabling an offer of £11.5 million for the player earlier this week and while neither bid will persuade United to part with the 30-year-old, the emergence of an auction, however slow-paced, will at least encourage club and player that an end could be in sight.

A resolution to Van Nistelrooy's situation would at least bring some relief to Ferguson, who was forced yesterday to concede the possibility he may not succeed in recruiting any new players, after so far drawing a blank in the summer transfer market.

The manager insisted, however unconvincingly, he would be happy to go into the new campaign with his existing pool of players. And, arriving in Glasgow for last night's friendly with Celtic, Ferguson maintained that until a deal is done, Van Nistelrooy remains part of that pool, and praised the striker's application following his scheduled return to pre-season training last night.

"At this moment in time Ruud is still a Manchester United player," Ferguson said. "Without question, he did very well in training yesterday.

"We are working on certain things [in the transfer market]. Of course, people are trying to make out we are in a desperate situation. That is far from the case.

"If I were to start the season with all the players I've got available, all fit, I don't think the supporters would be disappointed - neither would I."

Ferguson's protestations that Van Nistelrooy remains part of his plans while still employed by the club ring hollow when set against the context of the pair's bitter fall-out during the final months of last season.

Having lost patience with the player following the FA Cup defeat at Liverpool, Ferguson reacted by excluding Van Nistelrooy from United's Carling Cup final line-up.

The forward was then forced to play a supporting role during the closing weeks of the campaign before the dispute erupted when Ferguson sent Van Nistelrooy home before the club's final home fixture with Charlton.

The Dutchman had further grievances over the way his manager handled the announcement of his transfer request, and it is almost impossible to imagine a thawing of relations.

But if off-loading Van Nistelrooy is proving difficult, the search for his successor is proving even harder. Atletico Madrid's Fernando Torres this week became the latest player to rebuff Ferguson's approaches and the Scot is faced with a dwindling list of targets to replace Van Nistelrooy and former captain Roy Keane in midfield.

The manager's claim that he is happy with what he has got may sound even more far fetched if Andrei Shevchenko and Michael Ballack click into gear at Chelsea or Craig Bellamy settles in at Liverpool. Increasingly, it appears as though Alan Smith is destined to revert to a forward role, having been shunted back into midfield last season, and Ferguson believes the player could recover from last season's broken leg ahead of schedule and in time for the start of the season.

"He trained yesterday and looking at the way he performed, I would not discount him being ready for the start of the season," Ferguson said.

"I think it's all to do with his own personality. When he got injured, he was so philosophical about it. He just accepted it, whereas other players have worried and fretted. Sometimes, that can delay your comeback.

"It's just a mental thing. Alan's so strong there. No one's amazed. A bit surprised, but not amazed. With his personality we always knew he wouldn't just accept the situation."

A youthful Manchester United side coasted to a 3-0 victory over Scottish champions Celtic at Parkhead.

Jonny Evans handed The Red Devils an early lead, while Paul Scholes proved his well-being with a second-half brace, as The Bhoys were indebted to Artur Boruc for keeping the score down.

Celtic were rarely at the races on home soil, although a teasing early centre from Alan Thompson just lacked a clean contact from either Maciej Zurawski or Kenny Miller.

United were sharper to everything, though, and Giuseppe Rossi was unable to take the ball round Boruc before the keeper's fingertip save from Scholes was the catalyst for the opening goal on eight minutes.

From the resultant Kieran Richardson corner, Evander Sno got in a muddle, and Evans lashed in a firm volley.

Chris Eagles had a shot saved by Boruc, while Lee Martin drilled a shot across goal after an excellent through ball from Richardson.

Thompson's thumping drive was saved by the legs of United keeper Ben Foster before Rossi wasted the chance of a second goal when heading over after being picked out unmarked by Martin's left-wing cross.

For Celtic, Gary Caldwell headed a corner off target before Aiden McGeady side-footed wide after being teed up by Zurawski.

The half closed with United on top again as Rossi turned sharply onto a Martin pass, but was denied by the onrushing Boruc.

The second half offered more of the same, with Scholes flicking home a Richardson free kick at the near post following static defending from The Bhoys.

Foster made a smart low save from Derek Riordan's free kick, while Richardson curled a set-piece narrowly off target.

United substitute Paul McShane almost scored with his first touch on 75 minutes when his powerful header was superbly pushed away by Boruc.

Scholes headed a cross over and Boruc then made a fine double save, firstly beating away Rossi's free kick and then keeping out Darron Gibson's close-range shot.

On 85 minutes, Scholes helped himself to a second goal after more slack Celtic defending. His initial header, from Martin's cross, was spilled by Boruc and he scuffed home the rebound, while former Celtic midfielder Liam Miller almost added a fourth late on.

With Celtic due to start the defence of their Scottish Premier League title this weekend, manager Gordon Strachan has a lot of work on his hands judging by this inept display.

Scottish Champions dah bungkus nampaknyer....:lol
